Embossing powders are some of the craft supplies that I feel like vary a great deal from brand to brand, price to price. I thought I'd give you an overview of a few of the brands in my stash and how they compare. That way, you will know whether you want "this or that"! All the powders and supplies are linked below!

I learned something new! I have two or three different colors of that distress embossing glaze and I did not know that it would adhere to water droplets. 🤯🥳🥳🥳🥳

Ahhh just fun watching the differences. I love using ultra fine white embossing for phrases and words. Also if you are new you can make your own prep materials. Wee little canvas bags filled with corn starch and very fine baby powders that do not have talc. I caught one video who made her anti-static bags for embossing prep using white mens very fine cotton weave hankies. Some bath powders that have no talc also make good anti-static treatments. I bought empty brush canisters that have a fill jar end and a lovely soft brush on the other and fill with unscented baby powder and so far it's worked as well as the commercial little canvas bag I bought originally. I use both. They seem to last forever. I now need to test if any of my regular embossing powders and glitters might stick to water droplets or sprays too. Especially the translucents. Your video was a lovely treat.

I did not know about the water & the distress glaze. I’m going to try that!

Isn't it cool? I feel like it would be so cool to layer onto a page with multiple colors.

Thanks for the comparisons & tips, Elisa! You can actually use the water spray technique with any embossing powders, not just the Distress Glaze. It does take longer to melt the powder, because you also have to evaporate the water. With glitter embossing powders, if you find that the heat tool blows the glitter, you can always start heating from the back of the paper. That will melt the powder enough to hold the glitter in place, then finish heating from the front. Also, I have heard that the particular heat tool you were using is meant more for drying than heat embossing. Yes, it will melt embossing powder, but I noticed you had to hold it on the paper for quite some time. You can get a better heat tool at online craft sites, or just go to the paint department at a store like Lowe's or Home Depot. They sell heat guns, which I think are basically like the better-quality ones that craft stores sell, but probably cheaper. They get hotter, especially if you let them heat up for several seconds before bringing it to your paper, so you don't have to hold the heat on your project as long. That can also cut down on warping of your paper. One final tip - I always treat my scratch paper to pour excess powder on with an anti-static powder bag as well. That way, it will funnel back into the jar more cleanly. Anyway, thanks again for doing this video. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)

This video was super helpful! I've always wanted to try embossing powders but never really knew anything about how they work. I saved this for future reference! :)

Yay, glad it was helpful! They are fun to work with, but with so many options, it can be challenging to get started.

I just hopped over to YT for Bible study and saw this video... I've literally been looking at embossing powders for the last half hour! That's not crazy at all.... Look forward to watching later.

I’ve been looking for something to highlight some water splashes in a mixed media project and I think that the embossing glaze and embossing glitter combined will work perfectly! Thank you for investing time and resources into this comparison. :D

I totally forgot about the water spritz and the glaze. I have a ton of Wow, Hero Arts and some Brutus Monroe. Hero Arts detail is the best for embossing those small sentiments without the embossing running together. Love the video Elisa. Blessings

Thanks for sharing!! How do you like the Brutus Monroe? I've never used their embossing powder, but I love their stamps.

This was a fun experiment! I’ve used regular embossing powder a lot, but so far I haven’t played with my Distress glazes yet. I’m definitely going to be doing that water technique!

great info! I have a question, many years ago I bought some powered pigments from pearl X I think, very pretty colors and I just found them in my stash. I cannot for the life of me remember what to do with them. I thought they were similar to embossing powder, but it didn't quite work like that. any ideas? thanks.
@andrealavigne7824

If you stamp with a watermark/embossing ink such as Versamark, you can brush the pigment powders over that with a soft paintbrush & they will stick to the ink. You can then use a spray fixative to set them so they won't rub off. The fixative is key. I've heard people mention using hair spray as a cheaper alternative, but I've never done that, so I'm not sure if it would alter the colors. I know it will alter the colors of chalk pastels, so it may with the pigment powders, too. The Perfect Pearls brand powders have a built-in binder, so you can use just a light mist of water to set them, though the fixative will also work on those. You can also mix the Pearl X powders with gum arabic, which is a watercolor binding medium, and water to make your own metallic watercolors. Really cool product! I hope this helps. :)

Perfect Pearls work a bit different from embossing powder. They do stick to embossing ink and then you have to basically seal them with a fixative to make sure they don't smear. They don't melt like embossing powders do.
