This paddle was SCARY, BEAUTIFUL AND HARD | Glad we added fins to our ORU Lake Kayaks

OUR MOST SCARY PADDLE YET WITH FOLDING KAYAKS... and we've had some scary paddles.
Man did we pick a bad day to test out the new fins on our ORU folding kayaks. 10mph winds turned into 20mph winds quickly and we had a long, wet, hard paddle back to safety.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle! That's what the ORU Lake kayaks do! So we added a fin to the back and to see if that helped we took them out in 20mph winds, against the current, through a bridge opening. Our wettest, most difficult, most tiring and maybe most beautiful paddle yet on our folding kayaks while at Grayton Beach in Florida.

We’ve been lucky that we have never flipped but you never know when that’s going to happen. Looking back at this video we should have been wearing our life jackets. Thanks of the reminder.

That was a great adventure. Great choice in music, especially the intense under the bridge moments. We have the SeaEagle 473rl inflatable kayak for two. Once inflated, it’s as hard as a rock. Like one of those inflatable paddle boards. Worked great in Tahoe. But uninflected it’s a heavy 45 not including the paddles etc. I’ll have to check the ones you are using. Seem like they are much lighter. Thanks for sharing the fun!

I have the 393rl, the one person model. I am very comfortable with it and don't find if to be too heavy at all. I really dont think I would feel very secure in an Oru but am very secure in my Sea Eagle.
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Год назад
Our friend have a SeaEagle and it works awesome for them. I don’t think I would trade it for a Oru… from our observation going with them… the Oru was lighter and quicker to setup and tear down, but there wasn’t a lot of difference in the setup time because our friends were really good at it, however the performance of the SeaEagle on the water was way more superior.

Glad you like the fin. That the skeg I think you called it glad it worked for the kayak sake. It looked a little ruff when you were coming back with the wind and the waves but glad you were able to go with the current. I had faith you’d be ok kayaking with the fin! Great video! Have a great rest of the week and see you soon!

I cannot thank you enough for all the content you've shared in your channel. My wife's dream has been to have an RV and get out there. She has had a cruiser boat before, and we travel by plane wherever we want to go - she's not new to adventures but I was the one putting the brakes on having an RV. Thanks to you, I'M CONVINCED! What I didn't like about Rving was that I thought you needed one of those monster buses or huge motorhomes and I didn't want to be the designated driver all the time, but your stories on the Travato showed me EXACTLY the RV that would fit our purpose and plans. We went last weekend to see several of them as well as its cousins by Jaco and Entegra. Finally, we have decided on a Travato 59KL and we'll be enjoying our own adventure by the end of this year. Now I have work to do - I need to solve internet connectivity on the road if I plan to work remotely. My needs in this topic are high. THANK YOU AGAIN for inspiring us (mostly me).

@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Год назад
You are very welcome. Glad we played a small part in your inspiration. Now. Internet on the road? We currently use Verizon on our iPhones and we have an unlimited plan from Calyx Institute. If you want to know more about it just let us know. Works pretty flawlessly in US. Not so much in Canada or Mexico.

And there's always Starlink Priority if you want really fast everywhere.
@SergioSilva-zc6id
@SergioSilva-zc6id Год назад
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Exactly, thank you for your reply. I was thinking of having something like Verizon and Starlink combined as I need quite a chunk of bandwidth. I was even thinking in getting T-Mobile's 5G wireless internet plan with a twist: a "MIMO 4x4 Panel External Antenna Kit for 4G LTE/5G Hotspots & Routers" wired to the T-mobile router and installed on the roof with some type of rotating dome (just an idea). That antenna panel increase signal strength a lot, but it has to be oriented directly to a cell tower and by rotating it, you can find the best signal strength. Maybe it's too much, but I'll have to try first with both Verizon and Starlink and if that doesn't work, then I'll become Dr Frankenstein and assemble a solution. Already my wife was talking about Dish Satellite on the RV...

Having a line to connect multiple kayaks, not too close together, makes it a lot easier to get under a bridge w waves & current. Always easier to have two kayakers paddling together for short maneuvers like that. Similar to riding a bicycle built for two. Nicely don’t though 👏

Just installed mine. It's curing now. Will see how it does. I don't swim in those types of conditions (so far), but I thought the skeg would help with tracking. The tracking on the Lake is not terrible, about what you can expect for a very light 9 foot wide open kayak. Just hoping to improve it somewhat to make paddling a bit more efficient. Will see.

I bought an Oru Lake last summer and used it exactly twice because of a similar experience. Now it is a door stop. I had thought a skeg might change it from absolutely horrible to just very bad but it would probably need skegs front and back to get it anywhere near what you could call tracking. (I have a paddle board with 1 large and 2 small skegs that goes straight). Have you considered 2 skegs? I hate to throw good money after bad especially since the season is so short in Canada (hey the ice is gone already). The Oru Lake was not the worst decision I have made but is still regretable.

@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Год назад
I totally understand where you are coming from. We are not totally happy with the Oru’s either but it does provide us a way to enjoy the water while we are traveling. I don’t think we would buy them again if we could go back in time but now that we have them we will try to make them work. Thanks for your comment.

OMG! Were you hitting your head on the bottom of that bridge? I noticed before that your kayaks didn't track well at all. This time I watched, it seemed better. Glad you 3 made it back safely.

The bridge was low but there was enough room for us to go under. The fins did help but it still not prefect.

Wow, I have an inlet and I won't take it on fast water Just calm lakes. That looked like quite a workout! Not going to lie itMade me a little nervous watching. Are the fins compatible for the Inlet too?
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Год назад
We try to find clam water too… the water was fairly calm when we got in but the wind kicked up and made it rough in a hurry. I’m not sure the Inlet has a fin that fits but it looks like they do have a fairing that may help.

I tried the Oru Lake Kayak, but the poor tracking and susceptibility to wind did not work with the type of kayaking that I do on ponds, lakes, and ocean harbors--after a couple of tries with it, I sadly returned it to REI. The skeg would have been helpful, though not sure it would have added enough stability and tracking. I now have an inflatable Sea Eagle Razorlite 393 rl with a skeg, which does better tracking and stability wise in wind and current, though hard shell is my go to for more difficult conditions. And I strongly agree with a comment seen here about life jackets--they are now the law in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I have an on demand "rip cord" inflatable life jacket, which is great for comfort, weight, and packability in the RV--there are very few circumstances where I wouldn't be able to pull the tab to inflate the life jacket if needed.

Thanks for all the great information. Our friends have a Sea Eagle and it works great for them, and we were very jealous at how great it tracked in the waters. I think you made a great choice. We both totally agree about the life jackets and should have had them on.
