This is fantastic. I’ve started painting and I still have the mindset of when I used colour pencils so every hair has to be in place. My pieces seem too perfect if you know what I mean. This is what I strive for, be more about tones and values rather than every little detail. Yours is fantastic ❤
@LukeDurdin
@LukeDurdin Год назад
I totally know what you mean. It took me quite some time to start painting fur and hair in chunks as apposed to individual hairs. it defiantly speeds up the process lol!

Your strokes were so satisfying to watch! Wonderful painting! I've never tried oil painting before, but I was wondering what type of paint you used for for the brown background colour at the start. Was it brown acrylic that was watered down? I'm curious because I have to do an oil painting for next week, but I don't know if I should sketch first or underpaint with blue or brown, then sketch 😅
@LukeDurdin

Thank you very much! I do an acrylic underpainting in raw umber for my pet portraits. I like to apply it wet and wipe away the excess to get the look you see in this video. I like to charcoal sketch over this layer but its totally up to you! wheat ever your more comfortable with.

At the time of making this video I didn't realize how vague I was about what changed in my practice, so here's a little summary. At the time of this painting I was working on 3 goals: efficiency, accuracy, and bold, confident brush work. I had been working towards this for a year and it wasn't until this painting that it finally all clicked. This was the point in my painting career where it all changed.

I paint using a method called "Allaprima" meaning I paint wet paint into wet paint. This is not achievable with acrylics (without some sort of medium) as they dry to fast.
@e.m.tanner179
@e.m.tanner179 Год назад
Not sure what you mean by working "efficiently". Are you referring to your competency? That comes with experience. I wouldn't classify it as a goal, necessarily. Or perhaps you were referring to waste. But wasteful of what? Time? Materials? Labor? I would agree that brush strokes and accuracy are important. But why does 'efficiency' matter all that much when it comes to technique?
@LukeDurdin
@LukeDurdin Год назад
I think you kinda answered it within your own comment. it just depends on the artist and where they are in their career. For some context: When I was doing this painting I was starting to build a career as free lance artist and had a lot of commissions on my plate. at the time, spending 20 hours on a commission, in conjunction with my prices was not a good business strategy. I felt that I could be me efficient with my process to shorten the amounts of time required to complete these commissions. this involved streamlining a process, being more bold and loose with my brushwork, and more back end stuff when it comes to scheduling and client communications. What came of this new approach was a new technique that i still use to this day, bold blocky loose brush work.

Do you not have time to actually draw it rather than trace?
@LukeDurdin
@LukeDurdin Год назад
Tracing will always be a subject for debate. If this was a personal piece, absolutely! However, this was a commissioned piece. Instead of spending 4-5 hours drawing, checking, and re drawing, I can trace the image in 15 minutes. If the outcome is ultimately the same, there is no point in spending the extra time drawing by hand.
