Also, fun fact. Rachmaninoff considered this concerto his favorite. And was very influenced by it when writing his 1st piano concerto. You can find many similarities, for example opening chords or cadenza in the 1st movement.

Prévin was one of the best conductor of his generation, he died only a few years ago. And Rubinstein, oh lord, think about it… He was 88 in this video and nearly completely blind. He also recorded with Prévin Chopin Concerto No.2 and Saint-Saens Concerto No.2. I really suggest you to react to them also, especially Chopin! it’s on youtube :)

One of the first videos I watched when I started my Classical dive about 3-4 years ago…an absolute treasure..to have Arthur Rubinstein, THE pianist of the 20th century, an ICON, here at the modest age of 88 (!!), playing one of my favorite works, essentially a farewell to the world and to music …in a beautiful series ( Grieg, Saint-Saens and Chopin Piano concertos) wonderfully recorded and filmed…a GEM of the world….You should definitely watch them.

Grieg Piano Concerto conjures up images of Norway (his homeland) as much as Gershwin conjures up images of New York. It gives me a sense of wistfulness like I had when I was just sitting for hours on end on a bus travelling through Norway and taking in scenes of lush green fields with turquoise, rushing rivers, red wooden houses and white sheep seen far below me from winding mountain passes or black fjords surrounded by ragged mountains - laying seemingly totally desolate.

Did you know that the great Leonard Bernstein had to appologize to Artur Rubinstein about this Grieg Piano Concerto? When Leonard Bernstein and Artur Rubinstein should play this Grieg Piano Concerto in a concert for their first time (together) Bernstein said: "I don't like this piece - no good rhythm!" Rubinstein instantly left the rehearsal saying: "Ok you play the first part of our concert with what you call rhythmical brilliant and I play the second part!" Bernstein went to Rubinstein to appologize. Rubinstein asked: "How should we perform this in the concert without a rehearsal?" Bernstein replied: "We are both professionals!" After the concert which was a success Bernstein said to Rubinstein: "Now I like this Grieg Piano Concerto a lot better!" What a story in Rubinstein's memories! 😍

Grieg is another Nationalist, Gidi, as is Sibelius, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, and even to some extent, Chopin. Seems you like that particular group. Find a list of Nationalist composers at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_nationalism in case someone wants to argue about which composers are and aren't Nationalists! ;) You'll also find an explanation there of the philosophical underpinnings of Nationalism in classical music.

I really love Previn and Rubinstein, but the 1st movement is waaaaay too slow. It is shortly before falling into pieces.
