Fair play to UPS. Sounds like they’ve taken action to prevent it happening again

The pilots (especially the first officer ) did everything they could to save their aircraft, it was painful to see this young man dying after fighting for so long and flying his crippled aircraft for so long. this was an accident where the pilots couldnt do anything but still tried

@Levi i agree, First officer Bell was able to hear captain Lampe dropping unconscious on the floor and yet he managed to stay calm and fly the plane as professionaly as possibe, hes a real hero.

The video failed to explain this, but the fire was due to a shipment of lithium batteries. So the fire protection measures were actually quite good for holding on as long as they did. Most in-flight fires will be extinguished by depressurizing the cargo hold. UPS 6 tried this, but lithium fires create their own oxygen while burning, so it didn't work. The fact that the plane stayed in the air for longer than 1 minute without any lithium fire specific measures is a testament to how impressive the firewall was. Compare that to how long Swissair 111 lasted with just a basic electrical fire.

@@flyingtentacle7631To be fair, Swissair 111, had no chance to making it to Halifax. To my knowledge the pilots turned off the recirculating fans as per the fire checklist. Which accelerated the speed of the fire if I’m correct. However, investigators concluded. When the pilots declared Pan Pan Pan at 10:14 pm local time. The plane was roughly about 70-80 miles away from Halifax heading North-East. Investigators conclude from this position they would take 13 minutes to reach Halifax. Which would be 10:27 pm. By 10:24 when the pilots declared mayday for the fire. It was too late. The autopilot disconnected, instruments were failing and the loss of communication with Moncton Air Traffic Control based in New Brunswick. Captain Urn Zimmerman and First Officer Stefan Lowe did their utmost getting the plane to the airport. But a full plane with a heavy fuel load, too high on approach to land at Halifax and a fire rapidly consuming the aircraft. They were fighting an uphill battle. It was also confirmed Captain Zimmerman wasn’t in his seat likely fighting the fire until he was overcome by Fumes. Most likely he ingested a lethal amount of either Carbon Dioxide or Monoxide and was likely unconscious before impact. First Officer Stefan Lowe was and was still in control of the aircraft until the very end. At night, no control, can’t see with smoke in the cockpit and the worst part. No visual reference of what way was up. But truly, both accidents were tragic and in some ways could’ve been prevented. But was completely nothing the pilots could’ve done to save their passengers, plane and themselves.

@@flyingtentacle7631 You can still do it with a better designed system. The lithium supply isn't infinite. Make the fireshield in the cargo hold strong enough to contain the fire until the supply of fuel and oxidiser runs out
@avoidingtrees6692
@avoidingtrees6692 2 года назад
The B 747-400 and the new 747-8does not have a fire suppressant capability in the main cargo hold. Only in the lower one which could fight a fire for hours. So in order to fight a fire in the main cargo hold , we were ask by the checklist to climb to 22000 feet and depressurise it to starve the fire. Or start an emergency landing. A plane of this magnitude will give you around 15 minutes of survivability , With lithium batteries, they fuel themselves. Unfortunately that doesn’t work with them. After this accident, our company was not allowed to fly them anymore. That was a relief for all the pilot force.

The pilots did their greatest effort, outstanding capability but unfortuantly the fire led to smoke that the pilots didnt even breath, it also blocked the view and there was such heat and the plane had no landing gears, R. This has to be the saddest episode of ACI the full episodes used to be on RU-vid with actors playing the parts of pilots and this episode is heartbreaking. May not be any where near highest deaths but what those pilots went through especially the co pilot must have been torture. To think how well he did is just heartbreaking how he died.

It must've been a monstrous blaze that occurred on that 747. If he couldn't get the plane to land safely, First Officer Bell could've at least ditched the doomed plane in the Persian Gulf or Dubai Creek. Dubai Creek would've been better with it being shallower and the water perhaps extinguishing the blaze. In my opinion, F/O Bell may have had only one option left after all to save himself.

Sadly shortly after this one in October of 2011, another 747 freighter (asiana flight 991) went down 107 km off Jeju Island, south Korea, killing it's two pilots, it too was caused by a lithium ion battery fire. It's CVR and FDR were not recovered(likely at the bottom of the ocean)but they believe it had a similar cause to ups 006

Well, I would partly blame the rules regarding the limit on the lithium Batteries, it’s not the Pilots fault, not UPS fault it was more of the fault on the maximum amount of lithium batteries, had there been a lower limit fire would have been less intense, more time to land, all the opposite things that occurred (Except the Flight Controls, well sort of) but this crash did help to fit all the smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and the allowable amount of lithium batteries onboard

When I watched this episode it would’ve made sense if they landed in Doha rather than fly all the way back to Dubai because emergency situations like a fire in the cargo deck you have to land at the nearest airport.

Fun fact: some of the scenes used in the video were from another ccrash. South African Airways flight 295. a 747 combi (a combi has both a passenger and cargo area) had also suffered from one in-flight cargo fire After this, there were many rumors or conspiracy theories that not probably (or probably happened) 1. The south african army smuggled red mercury on board for the then Apartheid south africa's atomic project 2. the rifles or guns must have been on the plane 3. (this is the same that happened to ups 6) lithium batteries ignited and causes a fire
