4:13 With reusing water (grey water) don't forget using the water from when you are trying to heat up your water. Our water tank isn't ideally placed so we have to run our water for a bit before washing dishes or taking a shower to get it hot, that water hasn't been touched and is perfect for all kinds of things.

I have a Notion spreadsheet for my plants. I record the scientific name, the known-as name, the month I got it, a link to a care article as well as the level of water, light and humidity it needs. I also attach a picture. I am very organised though! I like the coathanger hack but I only have velvet or padded hangars in my house dahling! I like the little trellis hack someone mentioned below though. I've seen loads of RU-vid plant channels say they've given up on Leca lately because of the hassle. I prefer soil or water. I also use a kitchen ladle to repot my plants. So even though I won't be doing any of these hacks please keep them coming!

Suggestion: When cleaning your cutter blades with lemon/salt, instead of making a puddle somewhere by pouring it on the blades, just stick the blades into the bowl or a smaller/taller jar or container to soak, whatever you need to use to make the liquid level high enough to cover the blades. Less messy and you might be able to stick the scissors or other tools in there too!

About the tags: you don’t need to make your own. As long as it’s made from plastic, you can stick the tag between the pot and the soil with just the top visible, just like those yoghurt container labels.

It's astonishing how little people over here (in Germany) know about Perlite.. None of the local stores have it and if you ask what those white grains are, they have in most of their (imported) plant soil, most common answer is fertilizer, flint/small pebbles or even styrofoam 🤣 rooting cuttings works just amazingly in perlite as they still get air while keeping it moist ❤ most my FungusGnats problem got solved by adding Sarracenias and Pinguiculas to my collection, and there's nothing more satisfying then to watch those little buggers land on my plants, not knowing it's their final descent 🤣 thanks for your video, as always super informative and great presentation :D 👍

Many years ago, I lived in California during a major drought. Watering outdoors was generally forbidden, so I carried gray water from the bathtub down the stairs to water the potted plants on my large front porch. Thst year I had so many beautiful flowers, which I made detailed botanical drawings of. I still have the drawings, done almost 50 years ago.

🇦🇺 🙋🏼‍♀️ hi Mr Sheffield nice bunch of handy hacks. If you're using lemon/vinegar, it's s good idea to rinse in bi-carb water to ensure all the acid is gone, rinse in clean water and really important to oil it afterwards to prevent the piece rusting all over. I've made scoops from round soft drink bottles too, you can squeeze the opening to get into narrow spaces when potting. You don't need to upgrade your pots when you're starting out with leca/pumice. Just use ordinary nursery pots and a cache pot. Some people use a soldering iron to add extra holes for extra air flow. If you haven't heard of her, the leca queen's RU-vid channel is very helpful. Oh, and fungus gnats love moss too 😡 annoying little 💩 Love the Picasso style trellis! ❤️❤️ Have a great week🙋🏼‍♀️

To add an idea to the "labeling of plants hack" I have been considering myself... For context, I have commented on an earlier video that I have all plant names in an Excel sheet. They have now been divided up with color labels to the different 'zones'/spots in my room. So all plants on my desk have the same colour for example. All plants in the excel sheet are in alphabetical order, so while watering I can spot plants more quickly in my list by colour. Usually I go about watering spot for spot, not constantly back and forth through the room. That is how I like to have a good overview. Having said that, if you have all your plant names on a list, you could then easily give all plants on the list a number (in order of buying them or whatever you want) and just write or print that number on the label. I have 2 small Gymnocalysium Mihanovichii Variegata for example, having that written out on a label would take up quite some space🤣. If you don't want to see labels, hiding one with just a number is much easier 😃

Also, with vines that have dropped leaves(phil, pothos, monstera, even ficus), you can take keiki paste made for orchids and dab a tiny bit on the dormant nodes and they'll grow new shoots! I've had a 6 foot section on my favorite pothos that I recently did this to and almost every bud grew new leaves🥹 I've also done this to my fiddle leave buds that haven't produced new leaves in a while and they also IMMEDIATELY pushed out new growth! You only need the tiniest bit of paste and it's magical. A great hack for the plant parents that like the overgrown jungle aesthetic or want to shape their plants in a more specific way 😊

leca is just love, i m telling you. a little over 2 months ago i converted every single plant i own to leca, all of them made it without much trouble, besides some epipremnum, those are such a diva when it comes to transfering to anything really. yes they root like crazy and wont die at all for the most part but dare you if you put an epipremnum that allready has roots to a different medium, they rot away like crazy so its best to cut ALL of its roots and start a brand new plant with new fresh rooted cuttings. but besides that, i m so in love. i feel like im ''finally there'' semi hydro way of keeping plants is so fun to me aswell because you can do really creative things. and my plants go complete bonkers on leca. im not even kidding, in between end of october until now, they put out more growth and increased in height than they did the entire rest of the year combined. some of them almost grow TOO fast because i cant even keep up with them, i allready would need to repot plants to give them larger pots that i only live in that pot for less than a month, its beyond crazy how fast they go.

I use LECA (sometimes mixed with PON) with all my Alocasia, anything in the Marantaceae family, and most Hoya. If I were to suggest one to start with, I'd say a small specimen of Hoya carnosa, any variety of it. I have Tricolor (Krimson Queen), Rubra (Krimson Princess) and Compacta (Hindu Rope) in a mix of PON and LECA, and they experienced zero set backs with the transition from soil. I just washed the soil out, and nestled the roots in the rocky substrate. Watered from the top the first month (no reservoir) then gave them a shallow reservoir with nutrient water (Growth Technology Foliage Pro or Dyna-Grow Foliage Focus).

For my Dioscorea Elephantipes, I made a small trellis with some binding wire (very thin metal with green plastic around it, easy to bend). Most big plant stores have it on a roll (couple of meters) for a few bucks. That is a good alternative for small plants like mine still is. Like the hacks, but don't know many ppl still using wire hangers. Also would not recommend starting leca; aroids like it, but the upkeep sucks with the flushing and nutrient adding.

Use a pencil for your plant labels on plastic. Sharpie ink, sadly fades over time and you will still be left scratching your head. Pencil does not fade or rinse off. If you want to reuse your label, you can erase it easily…

About the water 🤔 I've just bought a bloody brita filter for my calatheas and just read that I should use it for my spider plants also, to avoid brown tips!🤨 Yet here you go telling me now that , go ahead go back to tap water but wait throw soap in it, dead skin cells, food residue, why not fabric softener too!😤 Can you make up your mind man?🤣🌿 I need clear direction 😂 It rubs the lotion on her leaves 🧴or it gets the hose again.

I water it every 3 to 4 to 5 days. But it's lately not getting any new leaves. It has just 3 big leaves left now😢... What m I doing wrong??? Pls cud u help... I live in Mombai. India... 😊

An Alocasia amazonica? Mine does that during winter. They tend to go dormant due to lack of light. Wait till spring and it would bounce back

I completely moved away from clay pots to plastic. Imo, plastic is overall the best choice for so many reasons. Clay pots being prone to leaching is very annoying.

I tried a little perlite box last week. Wetted the stuff, and poked in cuttings from my Scindapsus Pictus. They rotted in a few days. What did I do wrong? The others that I'm rooting in water seem find still, and the ones in LECA have roots showing. Why would all the ones in perlite turn black and mushy?
@SheffieldMadePlants

Hmm very odd. Was water pooling at the bottom?
@Enn-

@@SheffieldMadePlants yes, some water was pooled at the bottom, but not nearly as much as the cuttings in LECA or in the jar of water, as both of those were filled near the top.
