Modern day “hotel key” defense. I sent several to my daughter fir travel and this is the one she likes best.

My friend and I were traveling in Europe. They have huge keys over there designed to prevent people from taking them. One night we propped a chair under the door handle and set the key on the chair. In the middle of the night I heard a clatter and sat up in bed to see the shape of a guy halfway into our room. He turned and ran out. I’m pretty sure he was hotel staff since I think I saw him the next day. This device would be great to prevent these types of break-ins.

I’m confused with your story of what the significance of the “hotel having huge keys to prevent people from stealing them” had to do with this portable door locking potential ability? Also, why did leave the keys on the chair? (when you used chair propped underneath the door) Why not leave your keys, like by your bed end table?

@@MikeCee7 leaving a chair propped under the door knob is a time-honored security measure. We put the key on the chair so it would fall and wake us. It worked.

@@kristinb5121 of course everybody knows about propping a chair underneath a door. But Until you just described why now, I had no idea of why you left the keys on the chair. And if that was your strategy, to hear the noise, I would leave (almost) anything else to make noise. I wouldn’t leave my hotel keys there. My wallet has a lot of coins in there, that would sure rattle & make noise, but I wouldn’t leave my wallet (nor keys) right there within a foot from a potential thief. & There’s possibility that, let’s say, he wiggles the door open and unable to get to the inside, but able to get the keys. (and if you’re sound asleep, there’s a big possibility may not hear a small noise) if you definitely want to hear a noise, I’d put one of the hotel glasses from the bathroom on the chair.

@@MikeCee7 we were a couple of 20+ YO young women in town for Octoberfest. We thought we did pretty well in avoiding getting ripped off. Hind site is 20/20.

@@MikeCee7 I'm late to the party but one would have to automatically assume hearing the words "huge keys"...would imply that weight is involved. Additionally, why not leave the keys on the chair? The chair is inside the room, it's not like they set the keys outside the door haha

Literally hundreds of reviews say they don’t work on hardly any hotel doors. So I didn’t buy it. Because that’s the only reason id want to

It also works too well on apartment doors. If there's a metal plate, the likelihood of getting stuck is pretty high

This lock has me locked inside my apartment. I am not able to remove the metal plate yet, although I'm confident I'll be able to maneuver it but whoever finds this review, I don't recommend it if there's a plate already attached with a deadbolt.

Beware these devices any of them similar DO NOT work on hotel/motel doors with toggle bolt electronic locks often the key card design. Those doors have a spring loaded tab that rides the striker plate to prevent the bolt from extending while the door is open. Inserting this device blocks that tab and closing the door the bolt will not function as it thinks the door is still open. We've had this device with us in 3 different major name brand hotels with electronic locks and it will not work on any of their doors. We do use it at B&B's and other places traveling but keep in mind you may beed alternative methods for security with you.

In case we find ourselves inside a room and need to secure it, this portable door lock definitely comes in handy. However, I'm curious about its functionality for locking an apartment room door from the outside. I haven't quite grasped that aspect of this lock's use. Would you mind providing an explanation or perhaps sharing a link that clarifies this for me? I want to make sure I'm not asking a question that might seem silly.

You are correct. It must be locked when you are inside the home. No use if outside.

If you use it in the front door, will you still be able to lock it even though the portable lock is in place?

If it's on the knob / lever you could still lock the deadbolt.

The thing that always bothers me about using these is that what if theres an emergency where you’re incapacitated and need rescue. You’ve fort knoxed yourself in your room. If you’re at risk of someone hurting you, like you have a known stalker or angry ex, then yeah sure. But if you’re just a normal person without anyone after you, you’re more likely to need a paramedic or firefighter than to be targeted by a weirdly determined intruder.

Wish there were instructions on opening a door that the door handle has shifted and now the door is stuck. This is more of a hazard than necessary.

Doesn’t work! My landlord broke in twice with this lock. Once by using brut force to bend it and it fell off. The second time was by unlocking both locks at the same time while trying to open the door and it fell out onto the floor.

@@bloopbloopbloopbloopbloop called a locksmith and he taught me how to remove the doorknob from the inside (he couldn’t get in through the window) so we could open the door. I am never using this again

Same! I'm locked in right now, May 15, 2024. The latches are not the issue, it's the metal piece and no matter how I loosen it, it won't budge. I'm confident I'll figure out a solution but I do not want to call a locksmith because then the landlord will know

I’ve tried this with so many doors. It doesn’t work guys don’t even bother buying this. These are mechanized for specific doors and 99% of them do not even work and if it does you can still open the door.

@@LocksmithRecommended You only demo'd it on a traditional house door that looks like it could be to a closet or a bathroom. Can you demo it on an apartment door that has a metal piece. Help people who are getting stuck, show them how they can get out if they get stuck

This lock here in Brazil wouldn't work. The bandits press hard on the edges of the door. This lock of yours has already been tested here and it doesn't work. She is very weak. I am really sorry.

Very dangerous. Do not use. What if you have an emergency and can’t get to the door. Seconds are needed to get a door smasher to open your door.

I don't understand. You mean if somebody was trying to get inside in case of an emergency? The deadbolt on your front door prevents that, yet we all use them.
