This Predator Scares ME!- Cosmopolitan Cornbread Live Chat 

Here in our neck of the woods, a little North of you, when people turn their vicious animals out to run, they become fair game for those of us who aren't willing to sacrifice their farm animals to them. I'd say wolves running free would fall into that category. Also, wolves will pull down big animals too, Really Big animals. My neighbor's pitbull came after me a couple months ago. He was about 12 feet from me when she came running around the corner of my house. I now carry a "betsy" with me on the farm. She was also put on notice that he will not survive the next encounter.

I became over ran with wild rabbits. They became very destructive in the garden and the yard. Did you know that rabbits will chew on water hoses!! I have had to result to extreme methods of control. Best of luck with the fox and beware of the wolf dogs. They will be in your space before you hear anything. Take care and thanks for sharing.

Recently two older brothers near me, one in his late teens and the other in his early twenties, were attacked and mauled by a young male mountain lion. The older brother was killed. They are to be watched for here, along with bears.

Do you all have a drone? If you do, you might be able to figure out where the wolves live. It might not be a bad idea to get all your neighbors together for a meeting about these wolves, and then go to the sheriff. There is always strength in numbers.

Remember when you first moved there someone dropped off a litter of dogs in your area. Did they look at all like wolves?

I LOVE wolves. They are my favorite animal, but they are not pets. There is absolutely no reason why anyone is raising them outside of rescue, much less someone that is never home to care for them, and neglecting them. Of course they will be a problem. He needs to be shut down.

That would be scary! Hopefully the mail lady reported it. There is no way I would deliver there again. I live in the mountains in PA. We deal with hawks, owls, foxes, bears, and bobcats (saw one at the pond years ago). I am not a fan of foottraps either. My cousin uses them as well as the live traps. Several years ago we had a family of 5 foxes attacking til he got one in a trap and took care of it. I had a hawk come down right behind me and grabbed a small rooster. I heard the rooster squeal and I turned around. I screamed like a crazy lady and the hawk dropped him. I could had reached that darn hawk, it was that close. He survived. We always free ranged. The worse was a neighbor down the valley had a husky dog that got out. He killed about 45 chickens - some of my pet ones. We called - nothing done about it but we were told if we see a dog attacking, you have the right to shot it. After it attacked some other neighbors chickens, the dog disappeared. I had a rooster that was my pet and I could carry him around. A hawk got him but he pretected his girls. 😢 About 2 months ago, I was outside with my chickens feeding them. A big dig I have never seen showed up and strted chancing the chickens. The dog came up to my hips. I grabbed a stick and chased it off. There are 9 families up my lane and only 2 families have dogs, which this dog did not belong here. I have some roosters and a hen that I call my tree chickens. Every night they go up the trees to sleep. They had a coop area but chose not to go in.

We have a fox here also. Nearly got 2 hens a couple days ago. Trying to clear more brush to have a better shooting range. Must protect our livestock. Have a wonderful day and God bless 💞

Ohh how hard it is when ANY of our pets are hurt or killed! My 3 cats are my "children". They are loved and cared for AS MY CHILDREN. My heart is so sad for you 😢. I will pray that God will watch & intercede where YOU and your livestock are concerned. Hugs~

Constance, first of all, I am so sorry about Cupcake. Please be very careful. I hope that you are able to resolve this issue with the "pack" even if you and Mr. Smith and some of your neighbors have to take matters into your own hands.

That's what happened to me on Thursday. That Fox got 4 of my girls and my favorite rooster..ugh. Just like you, we went on a fix hunt. We found its den and now have traps set. My girls will not be let out of the run until we catch it.

Wish there was a way for you to set up a motion sensor alarm system on your coop. A loud horn or dog bark noise would probably scare off the fox.

I live in the NE corner of Oklahoma, you have the right to protect your livestock and property from wild animals 2 or 4 legged. Talk to your Sheriff, have the mail lady with you, you all don’t have to live in fear. If one of your neighbors is putting you all in danger, that’s against the law as well. You’re exactly right, eating one of their pac sounds like they aren’t being fed enough or cared for right. Exactly right!!

Oh Constance. I'm so sorry about Cupcake. It's good she got to love on some babies. She lived her best chicken life with you! The wolves, sounds like over breeding and poor genetics. Please reach out to your states game warden/wildlife officers. These wolves are not only a danger to your farm but the wildlife in the area. They can tip the natural ecosystem very quickly and they will likely breed on their own now. They may already be familiar with this but it may take several people reaching out. I suspect if the Postmaster General contacted them it would help in them taking action. Praying this all sorts out in a healthy way.

Constance, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your chicken. Are you able to determine how the fox got the chicken. Did the fox climb or dig to get under, or over the fence. If you can figure it out you can fix the situation. As for the wolves hunting your cats on your property, that is a major problem that needs to be addressed. If the owner (breeder) is not at home all week those dogs will look for food any where. When you kmow more, I'd talk to the game warden, and the sheriff.

If that happened on our homestead....the men folk would be hunting.

My neighbor has a giant German Shephard that has wolf in him (named him wolf too) he's such a menace. Every night tries to get my chickens. So irresponsible fire your guy to let them get loose. Not only is it a danger to animals but humans as well, especially children.

I lost my pet chicken, peep years ago to something that nearly decapitated her precious self. I wasn't home but my ex husband had to kill her to take her out of her misery. I was so sad and to this day I can't wait to see her if she's in heaven. We wouldn't have ever eaten her or the others we had, they were purchased as pets and possible eggs if they ever laid. I know it's the circle of life for predators to do that but it still frustrates me 😔

My jaw dropped. Why would anyone, who isn't home most of the time, breed wolves? Sometimes, people. Will be praying they are captured and/or stopped. Before someone is harmed.

Constance, do your chicken free range and that is how you lost your chickens or did the wolf and/or fox get into the coop? My dear friends daughter lives on Big Bear Mountain in CA and she has predictor pressure on her coop. She was able to drive away a black bear trying to get into her coop and found online Ghost Pepper Sauce that she spread all over the outside of the coop. No more predators

You may need to invest in one of those. pyrenees dogs. They patrol the area…I know you know that. That’s what I’d do…I’m so sorry Constance. Loss of pets and animals is tragic…

Hound dog might have to be tied outside by coops.

We had a wolf hybrid issue in mid Michigan 20-25 years ago. "Wolf Haven Kennels". High 80/90% wolf. Their property butted up to my north line. The owners were not able to contain them due to horrible pen conditions. These wolf dogs would run a amok in our rural area killing chickens/cats/what ever they could. Several times neighbors would go to our township meetings, lodging complaints. The county had issued the kennel licence but bc the canines were high percentage wolf hybrid, they said it was a DNR issue 😡 After a couple of these spin jobs our community took care of this issue ourselves..... The loose pack was neutralized within 3 months.

We had a racoon kill 17 chickens in one night while they were sleeping lost almost all of them.

I forgot to suggest putting sophie and amos in with the goats---only because I know donkeys and mules have killed mountain lions etc I guess by kicking the life out of them, I know there are people who use them for protection of their other animals so just throwing that out there in case you have not considered it---of course I only know of regular size donkeys and or mules doing this I do not know about small ones like you have

Do you have to have a permit to carry Betsy concealed? In Ohio we have have been so free of predators but now we have coyotes roaming in our little village during the day!! I'm sorry that you are having this problem.

unfortunately predators are part of life when you have animals---the idiot who has the wolves of course is a big part of them out on hunts since he is not home to feed them and he did not have them secured...I agree that chickens need to run free and not be caged up 24/7...having grown up in the country with animals and doing so much of the things you do (which is routine and just what most country folks do) I considered one thing that you might stop and see if it makes a difference...you are very intelligent however and ponder over all things so you may have already considered this----the dumping of scraps for your chickens, as if the chickens and small animals arent a big enough draw for the predators and they do have to work to get them as food the scraps are easy pray and is a draw also---my uncle purposely carries out the food scraps to the corner of their huge yard to feed coyotes (he is a nut and thinks there is not enough food running wild-rabbits etc-to sufficiently feed the coyotes) well that seems safe enough by putting scraps so far from the house but what it did was attract tthe coyotes to their home and now have lost two small dogs to coyotes when there were no scraps at the corner of their property.....bear in mind I am not saying stop giving chickens scraps and I am certainly not blaming you dear me no---I am just saying that the scraps could be another draw for the coons and the fox---the wolves are a different story but still scraps are one attractant....as fast as chickens gobble them up they arent much of an attractant granted but possibly a small one.....the thing I would be most concerned with the wolves attacking next as far as livestock would be your goats--the way the wolves are behavingg the chickens were a trial run to your place and when they try it again they may venture into a more substenant meal....goat meat......you are wise in contacting the sheriff but I would not hold out much help if they are like the ones here in Oklahoma....I would also mail a bill for the loss you incur from the wolves---I am surprised the postal service has not already taken care of the wolf issue considering their trying to attack the mail woman....that is wildly scary and insane....glad you are carrying your gun at all times now and I hope your son or husband does some hunting with much success to eleviate that issue quickly.....as far as the scraps I do not expect and not asking that you stop putting them out, I am just saying scraps may also be a draw to the predators which then leads them to chickens and small animals...I hate the fox got one of the broody hens...all of this is another good reason to try guineas again as they are great alarm systems love you and your channel stay safe

I hate your’re having critter getter problems, oh the wolf dogs are a no! I live in town, we have coyotes, hawks, racoons, possums…and now bears! Sad we are pushing our wildlife out of their homes. The elderberries are really producing this year, I hope to get some before the birds do!
