You don't actually need a 3D printer. The modern version of the cup could have been made in ancient times by embedding a rope cord in clay. When the clay was fired in a kiln the cord would be pyrolyzed and essentially turn to dust, which could then be washed out. Result: essentially the same as the modern 3D printed cup, but made of ceramic instead of plastic. 😊

When did you *ever* check the bottom of a cup? Especially one that's full of wine? Nobody does! The stupid model, the one with the big sticky-up part in the middle, that's a dead giveaway. But this devious model is much cleverer, to the point it might actually be a practical practical joke, instead of just a science demonstration. The hole at the bottom is covered by your wine, so you don't know anything's there! A science teacher might be able to trick a student with it, using pop instead of wine. You can defeat this just by putting your finger over the hole at the bottom, you don't need to try drink through it, again just a touch impractical! Once you've sipped down past the trigger level, it won't syphon out anyway, though tilting the cup might set it off. There's ways of getting past it, but they all rely on actually *knowing* about it! You're gonna look a bigger fool checking every cup you ever get for the rest of your life! The principle would work in a tea or coffee mug, too, any kind of cup really, that isn't transparent, could be made this way with enough skill. Did Pythagoras invent this? I wonder who did? Did he work much with syphons? I couldn't tell you off the top of my head. Seems like something like this would be named after someone famous, it's a sort-of generic idea that might be re-invented several times over the centuries, around the world. The design used in the video is quite obvious that it is a Pythagoras cup, so another thing that'd be done would be to make the holes less obvious. It was very easy to make without 3d printing. Shape the cup out of clay. Embed a reed inside the clay in the form or the siphon tube. Fire the cup and the reed burns out, leaving a seamless internal wall siphon.
This could be molded with a lost core process like casting the tube in wax, gently forming a clay cup around it then firing in an oven. But yeah, 3d printing for the win.

That's amazing. I live in a historical building and the sink is an antique pedestal one with a bowl basin. The way it drains in addition to the drain hole is based on this Pythagorean structure. I would watch the water start to drain through small holes at the top if it got too full. It was always mesmerizing to watch even though it is a logical process. I've seen a 13th century(?) 'Emperors cup' his server would carefully fill it to a point on a decoration inside the cup, the emperor would look away several times when meeting with new people - if as little as 1-drop of liquid, or powder was added to the cup, it drained completely into the base in about 2 seconds. It was a fascinating piece that passed through an imported oriental antiques store.

Pythagoras cup is known in east asian culture too, with a name that translates to "cup that watches greed" and in that case the center siphon works as a design choice to remind you not to cross that threshold. For that purpose, the original design would be better! Seeing it in a more minimalist pov was new to me so I just wanted to comment. Interesting!
The center hole is too obvious. There’s gotta be a better way to conceal the syphon entrance. If anything, the original design was less conspicuous because even though it had the large obvious center column, the entrance to the syphon was covered by the column being a dome shape. Idea- shrink the entire column into a flattened disk (or whatever the shape of the cup bottom is) covering almost the entire bottom, except for the very edge of the disk. Ideally the flattened disk would be convex in shape to better hide the entrances

I'm glad this was made. I've often thought about how awkward the original cup looks. I actually came up with the same design. I was able to implement it, but I'm glad someone could. Very cool!
It's more of a gag / joke / interesting thing now... Give it to someone and ask them to fill it up, when it all comes pouring out most people who haven't heard of the design are surprised.

Never know which microplastic dislodges and swims back to the cup from the hidden tunnels. Behaves even worse in hot temperatures where plastic releases bad chemicals. Pythagoras should have told us how to make this cup from simple soil like most earthenwares are made.
Pythagoras himself didn't 3d print these but was still able to prank his students. How people in previous centuries did things that we need complex technological inventions for is pretty amazing. I believe that we aren't advanced as we think we are.
