The truth about monitors, do you need big expensive monitors or can you achieve a good mix on affordable speakers!? Let's talk about it.

Make sure you hit that like button if you agree that monitors don't really matter!

I am producing since 6 years but i never felt confident about my mixing , for 6 years I used same pair of headphones (Scarlett bundle cheap stuff ) , i bought monitors like 3 years ago (Kali audio lp6) . Recently i felt that it was time to pull my stuff out in the world , so I reached out to an extremely professional studio near my place . I played my mix there , i was hoping it to suck ass but it sounded exactly like it did back at my studio . That gave me a hell lot of confidence . The thing is I don't have treated room so I mostly produce and mix on my headphones but for another opinion on low end and everything I reach out to my monitors . So depending upon the track .. mixing is a balance between time spent on headphones and monitors . The more I spend time and thoughts on mixing the more I realise it's not rocket science it's just experience and also how much you know your listening device (may it be monitors or headphones ) . I still struggle but now i kinda know what I'm doing and why I'm doing that. Idk why but just wanted to share this because I know a lot of people don't have the ideal conditions but there's always a way .

Thanks for sharing man. It sounds like you got to know the gear you were using and when you took your mix to a different set of monitors… it translated well! Good job man. I agree, it’s good to check your mixes on headphones as well as monitors!

You bought some good speakers with the Kali brand. That choice paid dividends. When I was trying to mix with Yamaha HS80M speakers which at the time a lot of people were praising. But my mixes ended up sounding dull. Everywhere except in my studio control room. ARC speaker/room correction software fixed that to an extent by cutting the presence/brightness down to a more reasonable level. But nothing beats having accurate, tunable audio monitors and a good room to mix in. Or....Slate VSX as a substitute!

Personally, I prefer to use headphones. I know people always say not to mix on headphones, but it's working just fine for me. I don't have any issues with translation. My mixes aren't always good, but they sound the way I expect them to everywhere. What you said about monitors applies to my headphones. I know them incredibly well. I actually use two pairs of headphones. The first is a pair of nice open-back Sennheisers. I do the majority of my mix on those. They have a very detailed midrange. I find that midrange is the most important part of a mix. Then at the end, I switch over to a pair of cheap Bluetooth headphones I have with very hyped bass. This allows me to tighten up my low end. If my mix works on both these pairs of headphones, it's probably going to work everywhere. I'm hearing more and more famous mixers talk about mixing on headphones. Guys like Andrew Scheps, Manny Marroquin, and Warren Huart all do it regularly. I actually have a pair of NS-10s. But I just prefer the headphone experience.

I think it doesn’t matter if you use headphones or speakers, you just need to know them well. And if you can mix on both, or at least check your mix on the other when you’re getting close to finished, then you are going to have a better end result! Absolutely agree about nailing the mid range, the rest kind of falls into place once you get that right.

Actually, I was passing the Mixing and Mastering course with Headphones. I had been using Beyer DT770 since course started. And for all of my homeworks it was insanely hard to find the proper balance. I switched to DT900 and everything have started working for me. All I wanna say is that you can use whatever works for you, personally, but that should be a proper equipment. E.g. DT770 are designed for recording, but 800 and upper models built for mixing. Monitors that made for mixing are worst it, but other "pleasure listening stuff" don't.

I wish that someone had gave me that advice 20 years ago and before spending some thousands euros. because all companies and all reviewers think the opposite of that, the term more is more on equipment is a standard. One more time ,Thanks dude!!!!!! ps I'm searching a video of yours ,if you have any , of how to treat a master bus channel how to use compressors and limiters and exciters on a mastering stage for heavy rock and metal.. if there is any please send me a link.

I have problem with both my HS8, after 7 years or so the eq behind the speakers are now too sensitive that a slight touch to them they change their sound with a bit of distortion sometimes. It's like the signals are messed up. Do I need to open them, where in my case bring them to technicians?

Hmm I’m not sure sorry man! I haven’t had that issue before, if possible and if not too expensive, you should get someone to look them over
