Ham Radio on the VHF and above bands can be fun, but sometimes terrain and other factors can get in the way.
Luckily I have access and have setup a remote site where I can operate from which serves as an asset to the amateur community in studying VHF and above propagation.
Let's go on a tour!

Hi Haydon. Am a total Newby to Whisper. Been up for about a month. Using same Zachtek unit as you do...200 Milliwatt antenna 80-10 LW but only 3 meters above ground at this time ! Have hit: Hawaii... most of the USA....USA Antarctic station in Mc Murdo... German Fed Republic station in Antartica, Various places in VK land, Brazil, Japan.... and of course every conceivable place in Europe.... Sadly..... New Zealand has sofar escaped me. Will raise the antenna to 10 meters and just keep praying, once I have had a chance to Guy the end mast, its very windy here close to the coast Thanks for a very very informative video. Appreciated. Excellent Albert! WSPR is a very effective tool for propagation reporting for sure. Glad you've had a lot of success. Raising that antenna a bit higher should definitely help out. 73 and thanks for watching

Great stuff, Hayden. Very generous of you to do the 477MHz repeater. The ones in SYD are horribly abused. Great job on the recent ZL tropo. Would have loved to get in on that, my 9el m yagi was on the tower but not yet cabled until the day after. Bugger. 73 de VK2AAF

@@HamRadioDX Great to hear that! I'm in my 40s and what attracted me was being able to talk on a microphone and ride the waves of propagation, so to speak. It's been my life long desire and I'm pleased I'm finally able to do it. Just know that your videos trigger the imagination and stir up excitement on a global scale on an international platform. Something that was never possible before RU-vid. You've certainly made us dream and have goals and for this, I'm grateful!

Really cool to checkout all the gear Hayden. Lots going on in there. You could tidy it up a bit though. Lol I would be worried about lightning frying the equipment, do you have anything to mitigate that risk? You standing on the edge made me clench up and freak out. Haha. Good work you are doing there for the community my friend.✌🍺🤓🇦🇺

Thanks Don. Lightning hasn’t been a problem in the past. Here in Sth Tas we don’t get too much lightning plus there is another tower nearby that is three times the height of ours so the chances of us getting a direct hit are slim

Fantastic site tour Hayden, how did you achieve a decent ground for the tower , we have a similar rocky site with repeaters for 6 & 2 , with 70cm & 10Mt to follow this year . Note the cable ties , we cut ours @ 45degree to further deter those bloody flying rats (Cockatiels) . All the best DX for 2022 ,, 73 Gary VK2VU
@HamRadioDX
@HamRadioDX 2 года назад
Cheers Gary, We don't have too many issues with cockies down here... The top of that mountain is solid rock... almost... a steel pipe has been smashed into the ground, not the best, but it's all that can be managed. We're not so worried about lightning. We don't have that many storms down here and there is an adjacent tower that is three times the height of ours, so it's more like to get a direct hit. Thanks for watching, 73

Interesting and worthwhile video tour. Thank you. How / what did you do to acquire the land / lease / rental site? Or perhaps your site is privately owned? Government muti-use contract? You should do a video on acquisition of repeater sites by Hams and the frustrating process to acquire. Thank you. Dan / KL1JP (Alaska)

Respect my friend I am located in Scotland UK. I wish we were permitted to do this here. Excellent you provide coverage via UHF cb too. What lightning protection do you have in place from the main mast the Yagis are attached to? And also the "flowerpot" given the height and location I figure lightning and other atmospheric conditions are common. Great work, thanks for sharing. 73 Rab MM7BVP
@HamRadioDX
@HamRadioDX 2 года назад
Hi Rab, lightning isn't too much of an issue here, but we do earth the tower and equipment. There is an adjacent tower which is higher than ours, so that cops all the hits for us ;) Thanks for watching

Wow....amazing! Here in the states, the new hams are almost all ditching the VHF/UHF/SHF bands for HF. They just don't realize how much fun stuff they can do above 30 MHz.
@mikemcdonald5147
@mikemcdonald5147 Год назад
depends on the state. We just installed three new repeaters. two vhf one uhf. we can link them for weather related emergencies or any reason really. We are also setting up more aprs setups, as well as bringing back packet on vhf.
