i have seen this tram countless times in the city. The Hague is currently upgrading its entire tram rail and station network and transforms from this generation of wagons to a new one that is more spacious and accessible for wheelchairs. This restaurant tram will be most likely the last tram of its generation that is seen on the streets of The Hague. I hope it continues its journey and purpose for many more years to come. Fun fact: there is another historic tram often seen traveling the city. The previous generation that was in operation before the 1970s.
I've seen many train restaurants, and got to dine on 3 of them in Japan when I lived there... Never thought I'd see a tram version, and now I must come to Den Haag and enjoy this! (I hope the tram driver can go thru Delft, Old Town Centrum and Schvengen (My spelling is bad, but where the beach is) because that would be a cool route for dining maybe...
I had the pleasure of dining on a tram in Melbourne some years ago. One of the best culinary experiences I've ever had. I'm happy to learn that I can find a similar restaurant much closer to home.
So... I am a Tram Driver as well, though here in Helsinki, Finland, we only have a single Tram that has a bar on it, but no restaurants. (Still has a toilet, because its a must.) Its an older model of a tram, that requires a separate training course and driving test to drive it. As far as I know, the team of drivers is around 10 or so, so very few get to actually experience driving it... Though you can reserve a tram for a private trip, and get catering onboard it though.
Amazing little restaurant tram there. I have never seen anything like that before. Thank you to the tram driver Wes Kraaijeveld and to yourself for filming this experience ❤
we used to have a similar service in Melbourne, called the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, and it was operated by 3 heritage trams. sadly it was shut down a few years ago due to "safety concerns" and because it got in the way of passenger tram traffic. the owner of the company says it could start up again but they will need new trams
I live in Voorschoten and have always wanted to go on the dinner tram with a friend. But, for obvious reasons, the menu is fixed. I am what some medical professionals call a 'super-taster'. There are flavours that I simply do not like. Most of your menu I would not eat so it would be a waste of money for me. 😞 If you made food with an advance request for those who have allergies or whom are 'super-tasters', that would be good :-)
That has to be one of the most charming concepts I've ever heard of! Everyone gets to enjoy a restaurant that moves around beautiful places, and the route is always changing.
Melbourne use to have W Class Restaurant Trams (Vintage Class) but because of their age and on-going disputes about upgrading including safety requirements now required they did not return to service. There is possibility that someone could use a class similar to this one shown in the video could bring it back, but I would think it would have to jump through a lot of hoops as well as rubber-stamping before it would be allowed. Still very nice video thanks for sharing!
one thing you didnt describe in the description was what you were doing with your feet down by the wheels of the tram, were you actually checking something down by the wheels?
This vehicle is a rebuilt old tram. These are three part units , a five car set would not fit on the network, and the cost of building it would be prohibitive.
Such a shame that is one of the old trams and is therefore not accessible to wheelchair users, such as me. Even in 2014 when it was converted the law requires that there be equal access for those of us who are not able bodied. So I find it very annoying.
Here in the US, we mix some newer low floor cars with the older high floor ones to accommodate. Perhaps in the future the next version of this dining tram will be on a low-floor chassis 🤞
@@starrwulfe That's my main complaint. in 2014 they have 2 other types of tram that are low floored, that could have been used, but no, they had to use the really old GTL8 that has zero wheelchair accessibility. It's annoying enough that they are still running in normal service, but that is partly because platforms have to be adjusted.
Please consider : this old type is the only that can travel on the entire htm network. Converting this type probably was the only way to keep cost down...
@@gilbertsandberg4736 There is very little of the network that is ONLY accessible to these trams. Yes it was probably cheaper to use a decrepit tram than a actual working tram. But if cost alone was the logic, then you are advocating for exclusion of wheelchair users.
Oops. I am not advocating anything, just explaining the economics of such an enterprise (essentially rebuilding a tram into a mobile restaurant) If a build like this were to start with a brand new tram, the cost may be prohibitive.
