Hiking the Wainwrights - S4-Ep07: Whin Rigg & Illgill Head
Easily in my top 5 walks in the Lake District and I knew that at some point I'd have to retrace my steps from a previous video and boy was I excited to be back! There are so many elements to this walk that make it such a memorable day. And I saw 1 other person all day. ONE! As always, thanks so much for watching 😊

Oh, Glenn! I hit the 'like' button before I even watch the video, bcuz I know it's going to be stellar. That 10 minute wait, I was chillin' from head to toe. Nothing like a blast of Mother Nature to re-JOY-venate the Soul. Too magnificent! Thank You for sharing. 😊💙 I loved the stone circles, and the abandoned crofts! It's funny, I always get the urge to want to put those crofts back to rights, and live there too.

If you haven't already read it, I'd thoroughly recommend The Shepherd's Life: A Tale of the Lake District by James Rebanks, a sheep farmer from Matterdale, Cumbria. A brilliant and fascinating read. Much respect to the farmers.

What a route. One of my favs in the lakes. Thanks for the tag along. I have a large photo now enlarged of the best British views that view from the promontory just past Whinn Rigg. Whilst I like Scotland, the Lakes views are better (can’t believe you said Scotland!) 😢. Around 15 years ago Mitterdale forest was diseased with something and that’s why there was all that deforestation. It was worse back then ! Pleasing to see some new tree growth. Never been to Brats or those out buildings (for hay storage). Farmers do have a tough time and the LDNP and National Trust have too much power. The world heritage status is a blessing for those two orgs. but less so for farmers. My view/opinion. There was talk of all the UK national parks being consolidated for government cost savings which would cause prioritisation funding programme chaos. Long live the Herdys. Petition signed.

Herdwicks go with the lake district like strawberries and cream ,they are the mountain sheep unique to the lakes without them would be like a fishpond without fish, again thanks for showing off the stunning lakes.

Think those buildings approx 48 mins are old peat diggers storage sheds. That area around White Moss was dug extensively for peat, which has to be kept frost free.

Marvellous Around 27:15, you talked of the volcanic rock (andesite) being lost when the underlying limestone gets eroded. This is very similar to Skye (esp the Quiraing) where limestone is overlain by basalt. So maybe the difference between andesite and basalt is the only reason why you don't have stuff like Skye's 'Old Man of Storr' and 'The Prison' near Wastwater

What a great trip with superb commentary. I think you needn’t worry too much about the “waves” as I suspect they are soil creep rather than rock fissures. Having said that you’re right about the crumbly bits on the edge looking precarious.

Love the video . For the second week running, you've shown a route I have planned for the end of March 😲, different start point but basically the same. I'm really looking forward to it now and I hope I get some decent weather for my trip. Boat How is a nice spot to sit and watch the light over Burnmoor Tarn with Kirk Fell in the distance. The Lodge is a nice picnic spot out of the wind as long as the cattle don't get there first 😅. Blea Tarn does get busy in good weather with people swimming in the tarn but just above it on a sunny day is a perfect spot to watch the world go by. 😅 You could say I've been to that area a few times and there is always something different to discover 🤣

So nice to see walks in this area. I live very nearby and have wanted to do some more walks around (it's getting the time) - great to get some route options. Thanks! The planes come through this side of the lakes fairly regularly. Apparently, for training as very similar land structure to what they might encounter.
