Make This Router Sled! I needed to flatten some slabs of wood and built this router sled. It's great.

I'm happy to see you left the bark on! After our majorly huge Derecho here in Houston, I got a 36" cookie from a fallen oak. It's already cracked because it took over a MONTH to get someone to come out and remove the tree and cut me a cookie... but all is NOT LOST... its in a sun pattern and I plan on some turquoise epoxy to fill the cracks!. I really like this slide... Just a side note.... I remember that redwood is extremely light because you had NO trouble putting that in the slide. My 4" Oak Cookie weighs about 60 lbs.... lol...... still a bit wet from the May storms

Yes, these redwood rounds were extremely light in weight. The oak you have will be a nice table. Turquoise will look great!

What a beautifully over-engineered sled. I'm definitely going to apply some of that to mine.

I used 3 x 3 angle for my table as well. I measure about 1/8" sag in the center. So much for 'flattening' my slabs.

You are so right about the box stores putting some great hardware stores out of business. There were two hardware stores I used to patronize, one was a very modern what I would call a contractor supply store and the other was tucked inside a store front that went back forever. This store must have been at least 50 years old and this was back in the 60’s. Thanks for the info on the sled, I’m looking forward to the next video.

Right on Vincent! Yeah, I really enjoyed some of the old hardware stores I used to go to. Places where you got to know the owner and staff. Very helpful.

Hi Jon! What a great rig! Those are some big slabs of Redwood.. That router bit looks nice, perfect for your application. It's always hard not to get checks and splits in the rounds, they are always drying. Wood always fights you! LOL Thanks!

That's some heavy duty stuff...looks like it works fine...im wondering if you could do the same thing but with a 3 or 4 inch electric power planer...???

Wow, that was awesome! You sure don't do anything half-ass. That sled was so "over-build" in a good way, because you'll be able to use it over and over again for years to come. Great job on the video production as well, it was like watching a "mini-movie".

Another great video Jon. Are you sure you aren’t a New Zealander? You epitomise the true Kiwi ‘no.8 wire’ mentality of ingenuity, creativity and practical problem solving. I’ll go put a hat on, just so I can take it off to you :-)

I wonder if an electric plane would have worked as well and maybe performed even better. No matter though, it’s still a smart idea. 😊. Oops just read chucks comment. He beat me to it. 😂

Looks great! I loved the sports training montage. I wonder if some dust stoppers/nylon strip brushes attached to the outside of your rails wouldn't help contain the sawdust and also let your vacuum build more negative pressure.

Hi Jon ☺ long time no see, I hope you and your's are keeping well , this was a great video, I especially liked the router table build, simple but effective, right on!, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of finish you achieve on those pieces being end grain , from the pile of blanks ,you've got a few hours work in front of you. Stay safe mate, best wishe's to all, Stuart Uk.

You can do without all the material you carefully cut for inside the sled rails. To deal with the inside radius of the steel angle, simply radius the edges of router's steel base plate, and run teflon tape inside the rails. With the weight of that router and steel base, any lifting isn't going to occur by accident, its going to be intentional.

Really like your concept. You have probably thought of this but I will mention it could really add a different look by being able to rotate the goods 90 degrees and get a cross hatch pattern. Just a brain fart, elsewise think what you are doing is very cool. Thanks for the look!
