Number #4 of your music code hits hard for me. I have about a dozen playlists depending on the type of music or mood I'm in. I then also made a playlist of my top songs from each playlist that I like to refer to as "No skip". If I want to listen to stuff I haven't heard in a while or just in a mood to refresh my taste, I'll put on a playlist that I feel is right. If I want to have a great listening experience without the need to worry about skipping any songs, I'll put on the no skip playlist and sing along. That way, I have them music I really care about close by without losing any music that I am just "ok" with. I guess that makes me a data/music hoarder, but there are songs I want to keep listing to in the future, even if it's once in a blue moon. I do need to go through and clean up my music libraries though. Could easily cut them by half and still be happy.

I have been rebuilding my music collection in the same way over the last couple months and its been so rewarding. CDs can be cheap to pick up 2nd hand which is nice and EAC is great for burning them to FLAC. Thanks for the awesome video!

I had a similar thought a few years ago. I always wanted more space on my phone for my emulators and music. I decided that I wanted the "ipod" experience that I remembered from years back. Week long battery life, no ads or commercials to skip, just me and the device. I was on a tight buget so I used a previous android phone I had. Ii wiped it, removed all bloatware I could and set it in Airplane mode. It now lasts for several days on a single charge and has an expandable SD card slot if I ever get close to filling it. It's worked great for the past 2 years.

Awesome video! I'm inspired to nearly do the same thing to my music library. I've been 'collecting' my music on my main machine since 2014+ or so but it's turned mostly into low quality RU-vid rips or otherwise, and I'd like to start collecting physical media and ripping them to get as good of quality as possible. And now this solidifies my want for an iPod even further!

Locally storing your music was always the way to go. You can listen to it anytime without obstructions such as the need for an active internet connection. I never got into using Spotify/tidal/apple music for this reason alone, I always stored my music locally and I probably always will. Sure, backing it up (in more than 1 places) is kind of cumbersome but at the end of the day I can just pull out my phone (or open my music folder on my PC if I'm sitting there) and start listening to my collection, whether I'm online or not.

Great to see, I'm not the only one doing this. XD I started my collection about 2 months ago, but I didn't have my old iPod touch anymore so I bought a cool looking DAP, the Hiby R4. Got a 512gb micro sd card, and started going though my Spotify AND Soundcloud likes I have had for years since 2016. In total I have well over 3000 songs and I'm constantly finding and adding new songs beside the ones I already liked.. So... It's going to be a journey before I can completely switch... 😂😂😂😂

I just buy records from local stores and tapes and mp3s mostly via bandcamp or sometimes boomkat etc other digital stores. it's a fun vibe! You are def. makinig me miss the old school mp3 player, I use streaming apps when I am out and about and I don't like not being able to access my actual library on the go.

I recently found a backup of all my old music along with the playlist from it. I’ve been debating going off streaming platforms, but i use Apple Music which is lossless quality and i realize if i do everything off of the service like this the artist won’t get paid for the plays which makes me sad for the artist i like. Though i will say for some more problematic artists or those not on Apple Music it’s nifty.

I plugged in my iPod Classic 120GB just a few days ago. Its banged up, The screen has a pixel error, but it still works. Coverflowing to what I listened 15 Years ago was like using a time machine lol. I am actually thinking of using it again for the exact same purpose you stated.

@@EposVox The Funny thing is, that I don't even own normal Headphones that can be driven by the iPod anymore. The 250 Ohm Cans are to much. But I can run it into my Headphone Amp, and it honestly Sounds amazing. I also use my old Sony Discman that way lol.

I just picked up a mint 5.5 gen iPod Video from eBay and upgraded to a 256GB SD card and replaced the battery (chosen as it is the easiest to mod!). This was after I pulled out my old rockboxed iPod Photo 40GB a few weeks ago and rediscovered music I hadn't listen to for years (was very happy it still worked) but fancied a project to mod a later model. I'm going to try using Apple Lossless first and have converted my FLAC collection to see how it sounds before I decide if I need Rockbox again. Gotta say though using Apple Music to manage music on it is painful compared to iTunes or just using drag and drop in Windows/Rockbox. BTW the reason you don't see 7th gen listed on the Rockbox installer as officially the iPod Classic which is a 6th gen was the last model Apple released. What people call a 7th gen is actually a 6th (or 6.5) gen as it is just a slightly upgraded model of the original release.

I haven't stopped using my iPod classic since 2010, but I would still be glad to find an equally versatile option but without the 16-bit 44kHz limits (I certainly don't need it, but convert the collection every time with the increase in releases in 24/96 is a bit of a pain, and I have to maintain 3 collections - what is only in mp3, FLAC and hi-res; there are many chi-fi brands of music players nowdays, but with such prices the idea of testing them on myself seems very painful) and of course without the Apple ecosystem. Otherwise, I completely agree with video, I can't imagine moving to streaming, literally life quality drop if I have to

I have two modes, one I am coding 'Backing Track SynthRock Expansion', nothing else... It's no singing or noise or anything not needed. Other, listening to music to relax. That's a hard one, but I am working on it... I do miss the days when I could walk into a music store to just listen to music, just to try to find something interesting. No algorithms, no pear pressure... just find something try out.

A small tip that might not be useful, you can (at least on windows) manually update the flac version used by fre:ac. There are some advantages size wise to that. Flac 1.3.4 is fine but 1.4.3 does give smaller files if you care about that. Also very random but nice to see kpop. You mentioned the aespa albums being nice for the goodies. But those (and pretty much any kpop release) treat the cd like such an afterthought. Like legit the only kpop that didnt arrive with a damaged cd are the japanese releases from various groups as they have a jewel case. normal korean/us version are paper envelopes or the shitty way like the Aespa Girls ep with like the page with notches. also apparently the setup you have in terms of total size and the sd cards sizes itself can be more problematic than going slightly smaller. loading the ipod up entirely will tank performance massively

They do treat the CD as a bit of an afterthought, but the books provide a fair bit of protection. I’ve not had any damaged CDs myself yet Good to know on the storage thing! I’ve only seen issues being if you go above 2TB

Am still using my iPhone and some good sennheiser headphones for when I am out of the house, but at home, it's my CDs and vinyl. I've gotten very disillusioned with the whole streaming thing... I might even end up buying an iPod that's refurbished at some point. Sadly I don't see well enough to make one myself.

I use the lg v30 as my portable android audiophile player with my music stored on my micro sd cards since it has the lg quad dac and the headphone jack. My primary android phone is the sony xperia 1 iv with it's 3.5mm headphone jack and it has a 4k 120 hz oled display and I use it for watching my 4k movies stored on my micro sd cards. I use my sennheiser hd 600 the original marble version and connect my sony and lg devices from there headphone jack. I use the headphone jack all the time since I always make sure that I have a device with a headphone jack. Otherwise I won't purchase a device with no headphone jack.

This would take me years! I have 5k songs bought on itunes, but with my subscription I have 30,000 songs. I do miss having a secoond device JUST for music though. Big reason people love modding the ipod video/classic is the built in dac... RIP the headphone jack on modern phones. I'm actually doing this same thing right now, but going with ALAC instead of FLAC since I like my walled garden Apple ecosystem. The nice thing about ALAC is that it's lossless as well and supported by the native Music app. With a third party program like Airfoil, I can stream whole home lossless audio with native Mac apps. And because I"m ripping the music to ALAC myself, there's no DRM baked into the files. So it's essentially FLAC for Mac. It's not necessary to go that far, of course. FLAC is totally fine and many media players support it. But I still like the native Music app in MacOS better than just about anything else (even Vox) and so ALAC makes the most sense for me.

Interesting! I used ALAC a lot back in the day, but prefer supporting open standards. I am not a huge fan of the Music app but I could see why someone would want to stick with it

@@EposVox I hear you! I definitely support open source things. Just so you know, Apple made ALAC open source and royalty free in 2011. It might be their preferred DRM format for iTunes lossless stuff, but as a straight format, ALAC is absolutely open source and anyone can use it for encoding. Just like FLAC. I use a program called XLD to transcode FLAC files to ALAC. Ffmpeg also supports ALAC on the CLI. Apple takes a lot of crap, and rightly so, but ALAC is completely open source and plays nicer with Apple hardware, I find.

I actually didn’t know that about ALAC… that has me re-considering things… I could theoretically convert everything and sync with iTunes still, if it cooperates with the space

@@EposVox I think you can do that, too! That's why I wanted to let you know. You might not even need Rockbox. I'm pretty sure the 7th generation iPod OS has native ALAC support.

I'm a big fan of the Schiit stuff - cheap (relative to the audiophile market overall) and effective. I dig the Hel as a good DAC/Amp combo. At my music nook I have the Magni/Modi combo for whenever i need a PC hookup or whatever

While i love the idea of this, I'd like to get an in-between setup where i dont have to carry multiple devices (phone and iPod). Ditch Spotify and have my library locally stored on my NAS but stream them uncompressed to my phone. Dont know what the best player on my phone/pc is for that though.

OMFG!!! Ive never heard of this website before!!! Does this mean i can revive my original iPod color with a ton of definitely not pirated music?! Syncing to iTunes bricked my damn iPod so it couldn't add new music but i had a lot of music i liked it wasn't ANC mplete loas at the time. I hate Notsee Apple and their "ecosystem" nonsense.

This is cool but I'd rather use my DAP (Sony ZX707) + IEMs (Thieaudio Monarch MKIII) for listening to my FLAC collection. Or my iPhone 15 Pro + AirPods Pro 2 for everyday convenience.

As much as I like this video and mindset (I gotta get around to fixing my 4th gen monochrome iPod...), I don't think you're giving modern audio compression codecs a fair enough shake. Not all compressed audio sounds like shit! It's pretty hard for me to tell the difference between a 320kbps MP3 and a FLAC (I'd have to really be looking, and at that point I'd be more invested looking for the difference rather than actually listening to the music,) and modern codecs like ogg vorbis and opus sound even better and have even more efficient compression than MP3. I think it might be worth making a video where you compare these modern, high-efficiency codecs to FLAC, or at the very least just doing that on your own time. I keep FLACs on my PC's music library, but mainly so that I have a lossless copy to convert to other formats from if need be.

Broadly speaking, yes. But I’m frequently using high end audio gear and much like my career in video quality analysis, am more or less trained for it. I recognize not everyone can - at least compared to a good 320kbps - but many more can tell the difference between crappy Spotify/YTM copies and lossless

Ahh, as a professional you must know what to listen for. But as a consumer, HD58X and even a Stax SR-202 sounded brilliant to me, even with just mp3 320.

ALAC is great if you want to stick with Apple stuff, but isn’t as open as FLAC, and I try to support the open standards as much as possible, as they last the longest/benefit everyone the best
