In this video I will have a look at the beautiful SEGA Saturn.
This one shuts down by itself after about two minutes of playing and i´m going to try to fix it. From experience I know what the problem is, so let´s do-it ;)
I hope this video is helpful and that you enjoy it.
I'm not a professional, so I'll admit that sometimes my repair attempts can make things worse. Please don't attempt to copy anything you see on this channel. If you try to mimic my methods and accidentally start finding Saturn moons names, nice names for your kids, Good luck with that! (Dont do it!)

The most painful soldering of the transistor in TO220 pkg that I have ever seen

I would put the bogus chinesium transistors in a bag and report them online. Not in the tme pack, it could lead to confusion at some point.

I threw them in the bin already, and I will use the TME package for epoxy mixing ;) .. but the chinesium ones are really easy to spot with naked eye. They really look ugly.

Long story short is to always buy quality parts if you want stuff to work. if you buy really cheap stuff from China you get really cheap stuff from China. If I was doing the repair on that supply I would really consider doing a re-cap on it as well, I had several cases where caps of this type started to leak electrolyte through the seal from age and that stuff is corrosive on a whole different level. caps from the 90s are old enough even some good stuff like Nichicon leaks like this now. it corrodes everything it gets in contact with. I had some really close calls with computers even being dead like unplugged.

True! But regarding Saturn's around here, I haven't found a single one with problems with caps.

@@_RETROFIX_ you don’t necessarily see it until it is gone fore some time. This does not show like the capacitor plague with bulging or bursting caps on the top. They slowly seeps electrolyte at the bottom beneath the cap that gets absorbed into the pcb over time. It is most commonly recognized if you unsolder a cap and get a rancid fishy smell when you heat the solder around the area. The leakage starts very small and gets bigger over time. Thing is, that you may not have seen it yet, but as age goes up the closer you get to get until you see it. A recap in time is much easier done than one too late where you have to clean up and repair the mess after it at least. I recommend you read on the topic. There is a lot of forums for bad caps and a lot of listed caps, brands and models that tends to leak in old gear too. I had REALLY bad luck with caps during my life. All my life. I never trust them. Unless most Rubycon lol

I've repaired lots of stuff due to bad caps. And usually nichicon. I know the right thing to do is to change them prior to problems. I just don't change them everywhere . usually I do that on a probability or known problems basis.

I have Sega Saturn which freezes soon after being turned on with strong stutter sound, like DRRRRRRNNNN! Could it be the same transistor is the problem?

@_RETROFIX_ 16 дней назад
I really dont know. Have you measured the power supply voltages when it does that? You might have corrupted memory or more complex problems.

If anything Sega should have made this unit backwards compatible with Genesis Cart/CD, 32X Cart/CD Games. I mean they did the Sonic&Knuckles Cart with "lock on" (had a chip with Sonic 2 on it)

Yeah! An all-in-one console would have been awesome!

This board was already expensive to produce with just the Saturn hardware. Adding in backwards compatibility hardware would have pushed the price into the stratosphere, instead of just through the roof.

The video is poorly oriented. * Does not show the fault. * Does not show the repaired product. * Does not make any measurements. * You assemble the console and put the screws in without testing it first. * You speed up the camera in the interesting parts and put the video at normal speed in a simple change of a transistor, which takes you half of the entire video.

Thank you for your suggestions. This is not an educational channel and i´m just a basic idiot doing some fixes for entertainment. This kind of fault is known and there is no measurement that can be made to prevent-it or diagnose-it. It just stops working suddently, and it happens that the transistor is the known culprit. So I shotgun replace it and it solved the problem in many consoles. I just wanted to share some details about the procedure and showcase a very good condition sega saturn. Disassembly and reassembly videos of consoles can be found elsewere in youtube.
