My neighbor had a sheep that disappeared, we couldn't find her, and finally, a couple of years later, she joined the heard again, with her wool full of twigs, etc. She must have found a cool place to lay under trees in the summer, by the river.; Of course we had her shed right away, luckily it was in spring when she returned, but when they grow their wool after shearing, it is usually enough to get them through a cold winter even though it may not be more than a couple of inches long, it insulates well. I raised sheep for 15+ years, they are incredible animals, most people don't realize that, they make great pets. I had a mother ewe whose newborn lamb was taken by a coyote, I heard her calling for it all night. The next day, I took a "bummer" that I was bottling, and rubbed it all over her, milked her and gave it her milk, and she accepted it as her baby. (A bummer is the lamb of a mother who has had 3 lambs -- she only has two teats so sometimes the 3rd one must be bottle fed. Sometimes she can raise 3 but usually you have to become "mama" for the little lamb. I used to love to bottle one, it would follow me around and thought I was its mama. They quickly learn where their milk comes from and come running when they see you with the bottle! It's a chore, because they must be fed about every 2 or 3 hours, but it's a joyful chore! I would hold the little lamb in my arms like a baby to feed it, then it would fall asleep in my arms. So cute!

Words alone cannot explain how much the fact that the sheep is named Shrek makes me so happy.

In case anyone was curious about his name, yes he is named after Shrek the ogre from the movies. It's because sheep are flock animals, they follow each other and move as a group, this sheep was a loner who went as far as hiding in caves all alone to avoid humans, Shrek the movie was only released 3 years earlier so it was still in everyone's heads, which is why they thought of Shrek as being the perfect name for him.

He took off to start a modelling career. When that failed, he went underground. By the time he re-emerged six years later, people thought he was a giant tampon. It's tough being that exotic.

When I lived in Washington state we had chickens. One of our Rhode Island Red Hens escaped, and I would sometimes see it crossing the roads around the property or in the woods and I'd try to catch her and bring her back but she always got away. The chicken survived 2 whole years through 2 winters without getting killed or eaten by wolves or coyotes. She finally came back and we got her in the pen and she died not long after by a fox that broke into the pen 😭😪
