Maybe 30 years or more ago I was in an Italian restaurant in the Hamptons on a cold ,rainy weekday March night .I was meeting with the owner to sample him on a bunch of wines to put on his wine list for the coming summer season .There was only one couple in the restaurant,sitting over by the window . When I started pulling the corks on the wine the owner said " Would you mind if I invited the couple over there to join us in the tasting ? They're regulars here and I would like to put some wines they pick out on the list " I said I thought that was a good idea , so he invited them over . They tasted through the wines with us and picked out several which they liked .The couple was Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley

When I was in high school, my drama club took a trip to New York to spend a week seeing plays. We went to see a new off-Broadway play that was getting lots of buzz - Little Shop of Horrors. I was in the ladies room during intermission and ended up chatting with this beautiful statuesque woman about how terrific the actors/singers were. Afterward, we ran into each other again outside on the sidewalk and we were gushing about the terrific ending when all the vines fell from the ceiling and landed on the audience, scaring the hell out of us. She was with a guy and I was thinking she was really out of his league (not very generous of me). As they were saying goodbye and getting into a black car that had just pulled up, a man jumped in front of them and said “Mr. Joel, Ms. Brinkley, Rolling Stone” and snapped their picture. That’s how I got my picture in Rolling Stone….standing in the background with my mouth gaping wide open.

He actually saves the first 2 rows at all his concerts and at some point before the show starts, he has his staff go and pick random people from the back rows to come to the front. He does this because he wants people who are truly fans who otherwise could never afford front row tickets to have an amazing experience. Plus, historically, the first 2 rows were usually sold by scalpers for way too much money to people who didn't really appreciate it. He truly is a peoples artist.

He has a residency at MSG since 2014. Once a month. He has sold out 100 consecutive shows. I've been to 9 of them. All the same section. I'd say about 1/4 of the section did what I did. So we see each from time to time. You see couples, parents with their kids ,friends. We have our arms around one another. Everybody is singing along together. We all know the words. The atmosphere is incredible! There is such joy in the air! It's really remarkable!

Billy is 74 and has been playing 1 concert a month at Madison Sq Garden for the past several years! He's ending his tenure there this summer after a hundred shows or so, but will continue to play intermittently around the country. He recently played in Tokyo. Lately he's double-billing with other artists like Stevie Nicks, Sting, and Rod Stewart. You should definitely go see him if you can! Btw, the woman with the spectacular fro is Crystal Taliefero, she's been with the band since around 1990 -- she's a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist; and Mark Rivera the sax player (also multi-instrumentalist) has been with him since the '80s. Both incredible assets to his live performances.

Billie's performance of this tune at his Long Island Concert in 1982, which is on RU-vid, was a lot better because he didn't ridiculously rush the lyrics as he does in this performance. That was 42 years ago & he has the same saxophone player in both performances, which is a good thing. That 1982 concert was one of the best concerts of all time. BRITT SHOULD WATCH IT in its entirety.

Two theories on this song. The first is that this is a couple meeting for dinner after a long time, and reminiscing about their teen years, and specifically remembering Brenda and Eddie. the second is that the couple IS Brenda and Eddie. Always been my favorite Billy Joel song since it came out. The song is actually a combination of two or three songs Billy was writing. The line "whatever kind of mood you're in tonight" was an actual waiter's comment to Billy at a restaurant.
@terri2494
@terri2494 5 месяцев назад
I have two more theories. Since the title starts with “Scenes” (plural) it’s either picking up on conversations at different tables or it’s picking up on the same couple meeting there for dinner on multiple occasions. The beauty of the writing is that it’s open to interpretation so everyone is right.

@@WBCROI think this is the one that makes the most sense. Its a couple discussing various 'scenes.' But it could also be from the point of view of a 3rd person, such as a waiter, going to a different story at each table.

it is for certain, a clarinet. not a soprano saxophone. you should refrain from correcting people when you arent sure or dont know. i promise that is a clarinet, and if you dont believe me, you can look it up. while a soprano sax is about the same size as a clarinet, and pitched the same, they dont look the same at all, and sound similar but not identical. the confusing thing isnt that someone might GUESS thats a soprano sax, but that they would feel certain enough to falsely correct a statement from someone else.@@tjj300

@@ice-iu3vv Not trying to be a dick here but Phil Woods only ever played on one song on a Billy Joel recording and that was on alto saxophone in 1977 on Just the Way You Are on Billy's Album, The Stranger. Richie Cannata played organ, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet, flute, tuba on the same album, having joined Billy's band in 1975 and leaving in 1981. Mark Rivera is playing saxophone during this performance and having joined Billy's band in 1982 he is still with him today. Mark is currently the longest serving member of Billy's band and the only band member still with him from the days of the Live From Long Island show.

This live version is from his concert in 2008 called the Last Play at Shea. The two shows were played on July 16th and 18th and were the last concerts played at Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY before they demolished the stadium at the end of the Mets season that year. Citifield was opened the following spring. The badge he's wearing was the Wells Fargo badge worn by Ringo Starr when The Beatles played Shea Stadium in 1965. Many guest musicians came out to play with Billy during those two shows including Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Roger Daltrey and John Mayer. But at the end of the second show Sir Paul McCartney hit the stage and the stadium just erupted!! They played the Beatles classic "I Saw Her Standing There" together and it was magic. Billy played the song this reaction is about and "Piano Man" before stepping aside and allowing Sir Paul to close the show, and the concert life of Shea Stadium, with the iconic song "Let It Be'. If memory serves, it was Billy who said that it was only fitting that McCartney close the show because he was the one who played the first concert ever at Shea Stadium with The Beatles in 1965. That fact wasn't lost on every native New Yorker who grew up in the shadow of that stadium, myself included. I was there on the night of July 16th, 2008 and watched this performance as it happened. I had never seen Paul McCartney live and this was a show I'll never forget. What a way to commemorate the final show in a beloved stadium. So glad you enjoyed it #BrittReacts ☺☺

You can actually find videos of him talking to a small audience explaining a lot of his songs. I could be wrong but I thought he said he had these different stories & wasn't sure what to do with them so he made them into one song. In my opinion, his writing is unmatched. He writes so many genres & if you don't recognize his voice, you might never know it's him. He also has always said he's not a singer.

While I enjoy this version, he's not in as good a voice as he was coming up on 50 years ago, so it might have been harder to catch all of the lyrics, but truly an epic song. You really should see him live, he does one show a month at Madison Square Garden. He does a couple of other cities too. It is worth the wait on waiting list. Life changing concert. Everyone sings to all his popular songs. Piano man at his concert is unbelievable and you need to get your ass to his concert.

This is my favourite Billy Joel song and I’ve watched interviews in which he said it’s his favourite/ best too. I remember hearing it for the first time on my little car cassette player. I was driving home from buying his “The Stranger” tape cassette and “Scenes” blew my mind! I pulled into the driveway and had to rewind it. Actually, the player could only fast forward tapes, so I flipped the tape, ff’d it, flipped it and THEN listened to it a second time sitting in the driveway of my parents’ home. You get something extra from music when you just listen to it without any visual cues distracting you. It’s a beautifully evocative, jazzy, mini musical journey. I would encourage you to listen to his original studio version.

I saw Billy live for the first time in Houston, TX, in 1987. I was already a fan, but at that point in my young life, there were so many of his songs that I simply did not know. The one that blew me away that night was Angry Young Man. I had never seen or heard a piano played with that type of ferocity. You should definitely check out a live version of that song ,preferably when he was an angrier, younger man.

Billy is truly a genius songwriter, pianist, performer, lyricist, showman and gifted artist. I saw him many years ago live in an outdoor arena, in the afternoon/evening on a warm summer, Melbourne Australian day. The whole show was amazing, but the standout song was "Goodnight Saigon". The sound of the choppers sounded so real, and it is a song that is so meaningful and moving. He is able to do anything. Please keep up your rabbit hole journey on Billy (it's a huge hole to be explored)

Your reviews, like Billy Joel and his songs, are phenomenal. This was part of The Last Play at Shea. You should review the last two songs from this concert. He brings on a very special guest. In fact, this guest and his band, not only was the first group to perform at Shea, but they were the first group to perform stadium concerts.

The original version on the album "The Stranger" is an amazing album cut. He was probably 27 years hold when he wrote this. The 1st time I saw Billy Joel live, I was so excited when this song started because it’s my fav song of his and I remember thinking it’s crazy how much better it sounded live!! At one point durning the sax solo I remember thinking I can feel the saxophone, the sound was incredible & then I turned my head away from the stage for a moment and realized the sax player was playing right next to me in the aisle! A moment I will treasure forever

Remember, when you watch almost any performer in concert 40+ years after the original song was released it’s going to sound much different. Voice changes. Some of the musicians change. You definitely need to listen to a different version of this. He was obviously rushing through the song. Kinda seemed a bit winded at times. Check out the studio version also..& of “Just The Way You Are”. & The “Piano Man” official video. You need to check out the version closer to the original release time, 30-40 years later is not the same.

I went to one of his concerts a couple of decades back, and it was incredible. He did, like, six encores, one of which he had to pass out music to his band because it had been so long since they played the song (sorry, I forget which). So it went on for well over two hours, and we all left thinking it was the most incredible concert ever. I heard from a friend who lived in a city about two hours down the highway who went to the Billy Joel concert a day or two after that, and heard that Billy didn't consider the concert I saw to be all that exciting. If so, I can't imagine what counts as an exciting concert for him.

Saw him in the 80's in Philly, then again in the mid 2000's and the man hasn't lost a thing. Funny story: I was at a party in the '80's and a group of hard-core, outlaw looking bikers showed up. There was some hard-rock playing on the stereo (I think it was Ozzie & Black Sabbath) and one of the bikers comes over to look at all the available music, pulls out an 8-track tape and says, "Now let's listen to something REALLY good". Well I sure wasn't going to argue with him, lol. I was completely stunned when he popped in the tape and Billie Joel came out of the speakers. He was right. I dont care who you are --that's good stuff right there! 😊

This piece is actually a combination of several unfinished songs that he combined into one piece. Supposedly he had an album obligation but not enough finished songs. So he took inspiration from The Beatles' "A day in the life" which was also a medley of unfinished material.

I haven't seen him in concert since the Storm Front tour (89?) and it just feels like one of the more appropriate experiences to have on a trip to the Big Apple.
