If you guys are interested to know, keeping this vague to avoid any minor spoilers, this show has subtle symbolic connections to a tragedy that happened in South Korea in 2014 called the Sewol Ferry Disaster. Incompetence and negligence of the captain lead to- out of 476 passengers and crew- 304 dead in the disaster, including around 250 students from a high school trip. He abandoned everyone, didn’t warn about the life or death circumstances, and left them on the ship oblivious and scared. Some character actions, dialogue, and some say even appearances mirror those of the students who lost their lives. Finding that out made the show hit me a lot harder.

i haven't watched this show yet but I did watch a documentary about the sewol ferry disaster like 3 years ago and was absolutely appalled! the president at the time tried to cover it up too! and the military who were supposed to rescue/help the kids weren't working as hard until after the president got there to check the situation out and it was already too late. watching the captain crawling out the window without warning anyone was disgusting

@MarvelousMaggie in case you haven't watched the show, it's not a direct parallel (I mean, obviously, this ones about zombies), but it touches on how kids feel Korean government and officials would and did handle such a tragedy

@MarvelousMaggie i understand you completely. For what it’s worth, the subtle symbolism in the show can go unnoticed if you don’t have prior knowledge or hear that it’s even there to begin with. If I’m not mistaken, the government tried to cover up the incident and silence people from speaking on it. So Korean artists (whether with music or through symbolism in films like this show) have made tributes to firmly stand with the families that it was an event that can’t be swept under the rug or forgotten. I found out about the tragedy through two beautiful songs that i thought were just about losing or longing for a loved one. But as terrible as it felt to learn about, I’m glad it was spoken about so respectfully.

Just letting y’all know show talks about the Korean social system and most of the bullying in here is pretty realistic for Korean society. Although I may not be correct this show is basically about the gap between adults and students and how students in Korea are sort of dehumanised and deemed as incompetent by older generations simply because they are struggling financially to get jobs, education and housing

also if you continue watching you'll understand by what i mean, but i feel like the even of the sewol ferry incident is heavily explored in this drama. This incident was basically when these kids went on a school trip on a ferry. the ferry crashed and started to sink. However the captain instead of saving the students, he saved himself and other crew staff and left most of the kids to drown. SO basically this whole show is just teachers vs students drama. It also explores themes of love, friendships, education and parenthood! great show which includes the whole package; comedy. romance and violence :)

I agree with most things you said except the bullying in the show being realistic. Bullying in Korea is bad, but so is bullying in every other country, and the level of bullying is similar to the US or other Asian countries. That level of bullying with students forcing a girl to strip and forcing another to take photos is exceedingly rare, and during several years in Seoul while I was studying there, I have never come across this intense level of bullying. It is no different than bullying in any other country. That being said, bullying is a serious issue for all countries.

So true! Younger people tend to be shot down in Korean and Chinese culture. “Let the adults talk” even if the young person is in their mid twenties.

I read a forum once and a lot of s,korean teens posted on it and I just wanna let y'all know, the bullying problem in s.korea is really bad, like a lot of the scenarios with the hs bullies you see in the shows happns irl too, it's really sad. s.korea doesn't encourage it bc obviously just like everywhere bullying sucks, but its still a big problem in the high schools there. edit: the suicide rate is high in countries like south korea and japan bc not only is the academic culture so strict and there's a lot of focus on studies, but also bc of bullying.

yeah i agree with you. although ive never been to a korean school, i cant tell how intense the bullying must be, because when korean celebrities and idols have bullying scandals/allegations, the public show no remorse and disregard the celeb, not allowing them to even go on tv

Which forum is this? I have studied in Seoul, Korea for multiple years while tutoring English for high school students there, and I never came across news of this level of bullying on any platform, including stories from my students or their parents. Based on my real life experience living in the country, I strongly disagree with your comment that the level of bullying displayed in the show is representative of what usually happens. The bullying is bad, yes, but it is just as bad in other Western countries and East Asian countries as far as I know.

@@TheICEgirl6100 That does not prove the point of how that level of bullying is common practice. You have 1 skewed example of someone who was very unfortunate. I have had multiple students who went to several different schools, all of whom were having a great school life. These students helped me get a general idea of school life over there, and my conclusion is that with regards to bullying, it's like a high school in any other regions that I've been to/have lots of information about, which are New Zealand, Canada and the US. There are also extreme cases of bullying in the West that has lead to student suicide. Do not make the generalization that bullying is worse in East Asia off of 1 penpal because that is false and logically flawed. That being said, I am very sorry to hear that he or she (your penpal) has had such a horrible experience. 😕 I sincerely hope he or she is better now.

@@jimmyha1898 i never said it was common practice and neither did anyone in this thread you said " I never came across news of this level of bullying on any platform" that's the part i focused on. i gave my example because that's the one closest to me, i did not generalize off of my penpal i'm not stupid. I said it's a little more extreme because you don't usualy hear about college level hazing type bullying in highschool, yet i read multiple situations like that on forums and saw videos of said bullying circa 2011-2016 no offense but teachers are the last people i expect to know what's actually going on with students

In the end: “She did not move!” Some people freeze when they’re scared, it’s not that easy to just run. Imagine if this happened to you, you had eye contact with a zombie, do you think you will be able to move/run if you’re easily frightened? No

Actually the bully gained to stand a lot from sending the vid. Minors in South Korea don't go to jail for their crimes. Their legal system is written in a way that lets them get off if they're under 19. You could literally have evidence of 16 year olds beating an old guy up or robbing a store and nothing will happen except the cops will reprimend them. And it's not just light sentencing. They don't get sentenced AT ALL. Bullying in Korea is actually a huge problem lol.

The drama did not meet the expectations of Koreans. The original was a webtoon, but it's fun to watch it as a webtoon. In the eyes of Koreans, none of the actors here was famous. And the story was smooth in the webtoon, but when I tried to make it into a series, the story became vast and I forgot a lot of things in the middle, so the possibility disappeared, so it became a B-class drama. Ironically, it was a very famous Korean drama in other countries, although Koreans did not like it

They usually cast new and young actors to help gain fame. The same thing with dramas like squid game, duty after school etc. All of them gained so many followers thanks to this drama. It blew up. The famous ones are the older characters, they are also seniors.

Onjo was just ultra paralyzed at the end, like deer with headlights. This show is fantastic! :) This is one of my favorite Zombie series along with Kingdom and Train to Busan (coincidentally all Korean). The show has a lot of twists and unexpected turns. The acting is stellar (Lee Yoo Mi, Yoo In Soo and the main cast were awesome). Some parts may be a bit confusing to Western audiences since they are unfamiliar with Korean culture, but it was still the best show that came out on Netflix so far this year, at least for me. Also, just a note but I see some people saying in the comments that the level of bullying (students forcing their peers to strip and forcing another to record videos) is common in South Korean schools. From my personal experience living, studying and tutoring English to high school students in Seoul for multiple years, I have never come across anything similar. Bullying there is a serious problem, yes, but incidents of this severity are exceedingly rare. Bullying there is usually just as bad as other Western countries like the US or other East Asian countries, and it seems quite unfair to say that Korean students commonly see this type of behavior. In fact, Korea in general is an extremely safe place, where you can leave your cellphone and wallet on a cafe table, and nobody would take it after several hours (again, personal experience) or wander around downtown back alleys alone at 2 AM without getting mugged.

I’ve finished this show. Um imma say that it’s relatively stupid but you can’t stop watching? On-jo took her friend for granted. Man don’t give a shit abt himself.
