High quality PCB Services pcbway.com/g/0... Welcome to another exciting Voltlog episode! Today, we're diving into the world of soldering with an in-depth review of the FNIRSI HS-01 Portable Soldering Iron. Known for their quality products, FNIRSI has impressed us before with items like their USB power meter. While I haven't had the chance to do a full review on that gem, it has become my go-to tool for measuring USB ports.
In this video, I'll share my hands-on experience with the FNIRSI HS-01 soldering iron. Full disclosure, FNIRSI sent me this unit for free to review, but rest assured, my opinions, both positive and negative, will be laid bare in this video.

Before we delve into the details of the soldering iron, let's discuss the evolution of soldering iron reviews. Over the years, manufacturers have shifted towards cartridge-type tips, ensuring optimal thermal conductivity and responsiveness. As a result, the thermal performance of most soldering irons has become more than sufficient for the average user. Instead of focusing solely on thermal performance minutiae, I'll be emphasizing usability and accuracy in this review. Share your thoughts in the comments; do you agree with this shift in focus?
Opening the box, I found not just the soldering iron but also 5 spare tips, a powerful 65W Gan USB-C Charger, a premium USB-C cable, a USB-C to DC Jack adapter cable, and a compact holder for the iron. The USB Power Adapter, with its impressive specs, caught my eye. It's not just a power brick; it's a versatile tool with multiple output options.
The soldering iron tips resemble those of T12 or T15 Hakko tips but are shorter, enhancing precision. The inclusion of an aluminum cover is a thoughtful touch, preventing tip damage and ensuring safety during storage.
I'll walk you through the soldering iron's design, user interface, and unique features. We'll explore its performance on different soldering tasks, from pin headers to larger pads. The video will also touch on its portability, usability, and whether it's a suitable tool for various soldering scenarios.
Join me as we put the FNIRSI HS-01 Portable Soldering Iron through its paces, testing its capabilities and determining if it's a worthy addition to your toolkit. Don't forget to leave your questions and comments below, and hit that subscribe button for more content. Let's dive in!

I have one (too? ;ø) - and I agree, nice soldering iron. I got the extra tips + the base stand, from aliexpress - and at nice price too. My negatives on this though - Don't get the base stand, at least for this - I find it too big and clumpy.

@@EgonSorensen Interesting! Thank you! 😊 I have a TS100 on my FPV backpack, but the base I got is too small... We need to find a middle term there. 😂

@@MCsCreations Yeah, I saw the picture of the stand (optional, not the included small ehm.. yeah) It looked big, but since it was bundled I thought both would fit together perfectly. It fits - but imho it's way too big, and the holder almost swallows up the iron. Positive side is that it is heavy, so the iron won't race all over the table :ø)

Sadly no open firmware and a few quirks. Supposedly FNIRSI stated they would not supply updates as they're already working on a newer model.

I can understand wanting the firmware to be open so that you can make changes yourself. But I am not bothered for not received updates to my soldering iron. I have never updated any of my soldering irons in the past. Are there any issues with the shipped firmware that I might not be aware of?

This channel used to be my favorite electronics channel because of it's interesting content and of course Mail Bag vids, but it seems to be turning into the "review of stuff I got sent for free" channel recently. I hope we will get back to interesting DIY projects again soon.

Not much cheaper than Pinecil, which has better community support (custom firmware/mod)

I agree, community support and open source firmware is a nice thing to have.

It’s an adequate soldering iron but a lightweight iron with a heavy cable, and I mean heavy. Not well balanced in the hand if the cable is not supported by something.

IMHO it's pretty good for the form factor. It's hard to imagine how you can make it better in this form factor. At a workbench I would use a soldering station, but for some quick soldering or traveling, what else would you bring along?

@@voltlog Don't get me wrong, I use it all the time - for comfort the cable needs to be supported (since my power points are under my desk not on top of my desk)
