From Wikipedia: Following Jackson's death in 2009, Elias Kifle Maraim Beyene, who grew up in Ethiopia and was a beneficiary of the aid provided by the single, related: I won't ever forget Michael Jackson because his contribution to the song We are the World had a very significant effect on my life. I am 50 now but 25 years ago I was living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which at that time was suffering from a long drought and famine. It was a terrible situation. Lots of people became sick and many more died. Around one million people in all were killed by the famine. In 1984 Michael Jackson, along with a number of other leading musicians, made the song We are the World to raise money for Africa. We received a lot of aid from the world and I was one of those who directly benefitted from it. The wheat flour that was distributed to the famine victims was different to the usual cereal we bought at the market. We baked a special bread from it. The local people named the bread after the great artist and it became known as Michael Bread. It was soft and delicious. When you have been through such hard times you never forget events like this. If you speak to anyone who was in Addis Ababa at that time they will all know what Michael Bread is and I know I will remember it for the rest of my life.[70]

Music is the mirror to the soul. Ladies, that was a lovely reaction .Musicians in the 70's up through 1985 never considered the color of the artists they worked with. All that mattered was what we could bring to the table. Were we reliable, creative and a positive influence on the music we would make. Todays over analyzed and scrutinized race quotas would have been an anathema to the vibe most artists of that period were creating. I know, I was there. The whole was always greater than the sum of the parts. RNB

Lately I've been watching so many react videos to We Are The World, and I am convinced that my childhood preferences were right. For me, aside from MJ, Cyndi Lauper is the standout in this song. She gives the song so much life and meaning! You can't possibly doubt she means every single word. I find myself literally waiting for the moment she brightens the stage, every single time. That said, as time moves on I grow to love the back and forth between Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder. It's so balanced and perfect when either could have gone diva at any point. But their voices and tones stand out, yet blend beautifully. It's stunning how I still notice new things in this song after so, so many re-listens.

The purpose of charity behind this was relief for the famine in Africa . All of the singers and extras without solos were all superstars in their own way. Most were mujsicians a nd singers. It is astounding that people don't know, even in USA, who many of these people were, like Paul Simon. They only know Michael Jackson and a few others. The short white lady with the colorful hair who sang high notes is Cindy Lauper, who just turned 70 years old this year! It's been 38 years...Tina Turner is in this, she just passed away this year. To me this is the USA's finest moment, not wars...they left their egos at the door to help the starving. You don't see this anymore....

after the UK-based group Band Aid released "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in December 1984, the musician and activist Harry Belafonte began to think about an American benefit single for African famine relief. He enlisted fundraiser Ken Kragen to help bring the vision to reality. The duo contacted several musicians, and enlisted Jackson and Richie to write the song; they completed the writing seven weeks after the release of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", and only one night before "We Are the World"'s first recording session, on January 21, 1985. The historic event brought together some of the era's best-known musicians.

First, Quincy Jones is a genius. Second, back then there were problems with racism, of course. But we were making good progress. Better than generations before. We were moving forward with coming together. Again, there was much progress to be make, but we were improving. Then. The newer generations came along and trashed that progress. We’ve gone backward. The two newest generations stoked fire and told each group hated the other with a passion. Now there’s more problems than back when this song and video came out. Unfortunately, I don’t see that progress coming back for a long time. It’s going to take generations to move forward again, just to get where we were with Gen X had gotten us.

I remember, when this song and "Do they know it's Christmas" came out (which is the UK version of USA for Africa), I was about 12 years old. And for 6 months, all I did was put my allowance towards buying singles of the songs because I wanted to help. I think I must have bought like 5 singles of each song

Sad to watch the talent that has come and gone in that video. Wish they would make a new version.

The famine in Ethiopia and other areas of Africa was astonishing, 44 participants and raised some 75 million $ in aid.

So many singers lost since then, or aged so many year. 38 years. The other video for Haiti (after the earthquake) was good also.

This song is a powerful message for all of us, especially during these times. Looking at these artists, we see three very important messages... firstly, there is no such thing as racial, religious or national division... secondly, music is a very powerful force and can unite humanity like nothing else... thirdly, everyone has power changing the world, so if everyone realizes that an individual has the power to change, it will turn out that you are no longer alone in these changes... that the whole world is changing. Unfortunately, we are taught obedience from childhood, so a small group in our minds has great power and this means that we do not try to change anything because this group said that we cannot do so. I would just like to point out that all revolutions, all changes of rulers and governments took place as a result of the unity of ordinary people like me and you. Let's not be afraid to change, let's not be afraid to fight for our neighbors and for peace... but let's not fight for it with ourselves and with those who tell us that our neighbors are the enemy... because they are our enemies, not ourselves.
