Tub-thumping is expressing opinions in a loud or aggressive manner invariably when you're drunk. This song came out in 97 was everywhere and a must at every party. Trainspotting came out in 96 so it definitely wasn't in the soundtrack. Basically the song is about getting drunk, being sick, peeing everywhere and doing it all again while talking rubbish. Oh and pissing the night away can be taken as constantly going to the toilet, being pissed which means being drunk in UK slang and finally it can also mean doing nothing nothing with your life "pissing it all away". Us Brits seem to love a metaphor 😀😀😂
The first thing you hear in this song "We'll be singing, when we're winning" is a chant from the football terraces. Right at the end of the song, the trumpet plays a tune taken from a piece of baroque music composed for the trumpet in around 1700. All of this blended together.

I saw the singer say in a interview that this song was made because at the time the band members were not agreeing musically and lacking heaps of inspiration compared to how they used to be as friends in a garage playing (as teens).. the band was on verge of breaking up this is the song that bought them all back together loving music again together as a band and family
this song is a protest song in support of the liverpool dockers, to the point at the brit awards he then changed the lyrics to attac knew labour, and at the end threw cold water of the politician who was at the awards, this wasnt meant as a football song or a drinking song it was about the spirit of the liverpool dock workers

Haha, the singer was from near Middlesbrough. The Middlesbrough fans are convinced the song is about us getting relegated and promoted a lot years ago. We were seen as a yo yo.club. It certainly got claimed by the Boro fans for that reason haha
I missed your reaction to this! Maybe I wasn't subscribed then, but I think I was. This song came out almost ten years into my "professional" career, and I later switched careers but went back to my original one. I think my life and this song are a testament to the American Dream (even though they aren't Americans). This was a little bit of a theme song for me because I refused to be a squeaky wheel. It took decades of squandering in the ditches, but I'm finally in a pretty comfortable place. Peace, Love!!
i once got a train to a Chumbawamba gig in Bradford, UK, there was a nun sat opposite us, who got off at same stop and walked to the venue...., turns out it was Danbert Nobacon from the band - realised when he appeared on stage, still dressed as a nun lol

In British ish slang, getting drunk is getting pissed, ergo " pissing the night away means drinking yourself drunk all night line, not running to the toilet all night.
