Thanks to ‪@sillyr4bbit‬ for suggesting this one! Today, for #LearningFromLyrics, I'm excited to look at a new artist. This is my first time listening to Lana Del Rey!! And it was wonderfully horrible haha.
I always like to think through poetry tips from songs like this, and this one was a great example of using free verse vs. rhyming poetry and how that can work well in a song. Does it work well in a poem? Would I put it on a list of poetry tips for beginners? Maybe not, but it works here!
Watch the extended version here: / onwriting

Pardon my sick self! (Not sick anymore, but I was when I filmed) And ohhh goodness this song was saaaaad 🙈 but beautiful. What's your favorite line from Kintsugi? Orrrr, do you have a favorite Lana Del Rey song?

I'm so happy you're listening to Lana del Rey! She's one of my favorite artists and her writing is underrated. My favorite song of hers is called How to disappear on her album Norman F**king Rockwell. I highly recommend reacting to the writing on that song 😊

I hope you never stop listening to Lana on this channel. Her music, but especially this album, is pure poetry. I think "Fingertips" could be your next Lana reaction, I think it's one of her saddest songs if not the saddest.

her song "fingertips" from the same album is her most impressive writing in my opinion, it really looks more like a poem than a song, theres not chorus or verses structured like a song, and the lyrics has soooo many thing to unpack!

It’s really shocking the discrepancy of views between Taylor videos and non-Taylor videos. But I admit, I only watch videos on my favorite artists. That said, Lana songs are a goldmine and I can’t wait to see more videos on her.

Yeah it’s a little sad 😔 haha but it’s ok. For a channel my size, 500-1000 views is still pretty good for a video 🤷‍♀️ Glad you enjoyed this one! I’m excited to look at more from her :)

The RU-vid algorithm doesn’t help either. It always shows me as soon as Megan posts a Taylor video but this one has been up for a month and I’ve only just seen it, even though I love Lana too 😢

a lot of people are recommending “fingertips” as the next song because it gives you the most context on her life and what she’s been through (and recontextualizes other songs from her past album) but it’s very much free form writing, it’s a diary entry basically and it’s very unstructured. it’s good in the sense that it was very much needed in her discography, it put everything into perspective, but i’d love for you to react to some of her other songs. maybe ones that are very visual or play with the pop structure. “off to the races” feels like a movie, “ride” short film includes a 5 min monologue that’s pure poetry, “Gods & Monsters” is one of her darkest and most depressing songs but not too many people tend to grasp why. “Blue Banisters” and “Arcadia” are very lyrically interesting i think you’d enjoy breaking those down.

heey! great analysis of this lyric, "Kintsugi" kinda has a lot reference to death, family and loss (something that Lana talks about a lot both on Kintsugi and Fingertips, the next track). When she talks about the "turn of the mouth" or "depth of that chest cavity takes" she's directing to the void about the loss of someone close or relative. Family, as well, is a common theme in the whole album, for example when she says "Chuck was there" (Chuck is her sister, Caroline 'Chuck' Grant). I think she also references her Uncle David Grant Jr who died while she was on tour in 2016 and how she was not able to be with him. Also, Donoghue was her boyfriend at the time, Jack Donoghue.

The clutch of the wrist line is indeed a little elusive but my interpretation was that someone was grieving with her at the funeral and he took her hand into his and sort of bit on it to suppress the tears, but then it wasn’t his hand after all. I think it’s meant to paint a picture of a distraught person who’s too into their grief that they can’t tell if it’s his hand or someone else’s. I also think the line about the songs from the 40s is meant to show how the traditions in her family runs deep and she feels as if she’s been missing out on so much of that because she’s busy with her career, she touches on that as well in Fingertips from the same album. It’s like, oh wow so all of these people know these songs even the 14 year old and they have this strong bond but all the people that knew the songs that I sang are now dead and I couldn’t be there for their funerals. It’s a devastating song. I also wanna tell you she wrote this song about 3 members of her family dying one of them is her uncle who died in the mountains, so that’s why she’s probably going back to that place that is tied with her uncle to ruminate on her own blurry processing of the whole situation. I love that you noticed a discrepancy when she said she’s running away and that’s how the light shines in, I think she’s trying to evoke the feeling of confusion and loss, because sometimes you talk to some friends about your grief and they tell you the only way out is through and others tell you just let it go and ignore it and have fun or whatever so maybe it’s supposed to show how uncertain and non-linear the process of grief is. These are just my thoughts and this song is so close to my heart. I’m glad you got to experience it.

I more interpreted the lines around "Even the fourteen year old [...]" was about that she was now at the funeral and they were singing their old traditional family folk songs and she was impressed that everyone in her family knew those as well
@mad4771
@mad4771 5 месяцев назад
,the songs that she didn't know that anyone else sung were being sung which was the bright side of that person who was in the family who died. She now feels more connected with the people in her family which are the golden lines in her broken (now more healed) heart. Of course she didn't want her heart to be broken but now that it happened at least she has this golden/bright side of things of coming together and healing together. (it cut off my comment for some reason)
@OnWriting.
@OnWriting. 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I think that makes more sense for the 14yo line tbh! Like the songs are so ingrained in her family. Makes me think of the Covey from Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes haha 😆 I can see how you’d interpret the second part that way too. Maybe it’s that she doesn’t know anyone (outside her family) who knows those songs, but her relatives do and that makes her feel connected as you said. Very cool! Thanks for sharing your thoughts

That line is "cough into his mouth", whichever website has those lyrics got them wrong. She explained that line in an interview: Lana Del Rey's great-uncle Dick was so dazed the night before he died that he accidentally grabbed the singer's wrist and coughed into her hand.

You should check out Fingertips i feel like its just as good if not better. Its a bit like free verse poem that kind of asks the BIG questions: how did i get here? And where am i going? Who do I owe myself to? Who am i? Only important context (bc lana has become very autobiographical) is that charlie and Caroline are her siblings and caroline just had a baby. Also that lana eas a teen alcoholic and was institutionalized by her mother.

I think the song is about her seeing all her elders dying and seeing she's next in line. "There's a certain point the body can't come back from", "i don't know anyone left to know songs that i sing"

a bit of context with the “thought mine was his to carve into his mouth” she said in an interview recently that she was sitting with her relative who was dying and he grabbed her hand to cough into because he thought it was his own hand

I’m pretty sure the lyrics online for this song are wrong. She says “cough into his mouth” not “carve,” at least that’s what it sounds like. So to me that paints an image of someone on their deathbed being confused, and grabbing her wrist to cough into, thinking it was his own wrist
