If you do this again Lud, I'd highly recommend checking out the Set Seed world record for Minecraft - the runners there are so good that they're basically TASes at this point
Speedrunning to me is one of those things that I couldn't really appreciate until I dove deeper into the community. I went from: 'Oh cool they did the level pretty quick I guess', to: 'Holy shit did they just get the subpixel placement on the first try !?!'. It's really one of those things that the more you know about it, the more you can enjoy it, and I now have the utmost respect for runners, and the patience, skill, and determination it takes.
5:23 To note since I feel it's relevant, because of SRM and ACE (which helped make the Brawl Demo run possible), most major categories have a split of SRM versions that allow the trick, and No SRM versions that ban it. I totally understand the perspective of viewers who see this stuff and think that's all Zelda runs are now, but it's important to remember that the No SRM categories are still popular, if not more so than the SRM versions. There's plenty of people running the No SRM categories if you don't enjoy the SRM runs. It's not that SRM runs replaced the old categories, but it's more like they added additional categories for runners to run. The choice is there for people who want to run or watch.
@@jackg6887 Zelda runs suck to watch if you don't know what is happening. The most common runs you see on youtube and twitch are runs where confusingnass glitches happen. Most people aren't going to specifically search out specific categories if they don't initially like the speedrun they see. That's not closed minded nor is it boomer. There are other glitches that look weird and hard to understand from the outside, whereas something like the darksouls run, sm64, sms, wii sports, minecraft etc are both easy to see technical, has minuplation but is also reasonably understandable by your average person.
@@ReaIJackhammer No thats ignorance and unwillingness, if you don't wanna see glitchs, you just search "no glitchs" oh my god so hard, such magic, its as if people actually label their videos
@Syrel bro if you went to watch a movie and they skipped past 80% of the dialog, action, and resolution and ended at the conclusion you'd be pissed. You'd especially be pissed if there was just the main character dry humping the air, saying random lines to random people, and doing the bare minimum of action or drama scenes . Bold of you to accuse me of ignorance for not watching 10 hours of explanation on Zelda games to understand a speedrun of Zelda. And see the guy above, you see how that isn't fun to read and find in a bunch of similar titles? Do you see how you look like a fool when I could ask you if it's fun to watch sports you don't know anything about without any explanation with specific subsets of rules and even more specific narration on it. It's like asking a European to be interested in the NFL, specifically the strategy in the playcalling, audibles, wide reciever line up, o line formation, qb location, db location linebqcker setup and shift/ coverage, routes run, play action call and whether it is correct, play call for the distance and down, etc. Well it may happen but I aint gonna count on it.
@@ReaIJackhammer If you wanted to watch the movie, you shoulda gone to see the movie, not some dude's bullet-point review, if you're unwilling to actually look for the content you want, you don't get to complain that there's content you don't want on display instead Your comments about sports are childish and ignorant, most people do not know jack all about the sports they watch, they know Put Thing In Goal And Then Scream, as for that guy above? He listed multiple things as a showcase of how much variety there is to look for, its not a single block And yes, a European not being interested in NFL is sensible, similarly if you're not interested in the content, stop complaining that you're watching it and INSTEAD GO FIND WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT
It's crazy how universal speedruns are. You don't have to know anything about a game to appreciate how much time is put into performing a world record speedrun, and Ludwig demonstrated that perfectly here.
I think Getting Over It will always be my favorite speedrun to watch, because of the sheer speed you see on screen. It's one of those things that even as someone unfamiliar with the game, you can understand just fast and precise all of it is.
1:55 as someone who moderates the among us speedrunning community, that run didn't get enough appreciation. default tasks, the category being run here, is extremely rng heavy. it relies on the tasks that you're assigned when entering freeplay mode, which are randomly selected. since there's so many tasks to choose from, getting short tasks close together is hard enough, and all maps such makes the problem 4 times worse. at this moment, there are only 2 runs in that category under 4 minutes, it was a huge deal when it happened. as such, the movement isn't optimal because the chances of getting those tasks are so slim, you really only have 1 shot at it. i personally would've loved to see the all maps category covered, as that's a much more interesting category to watch. the pathing, planning, and execution that goes into those runs are much more impressive by speedrunning standards.
i feel bad for you. imagine talking to someone and you bring up the fact that you are a moderator for the among us speedrunning community /j LMAO SORRY
@@Caff-pv8fg idk, never really ran the category. that record still stands today tho, which should give some idea to how tedious that kind of rng is to get
“It’s always satisfying how he finishes the boss fight with the absolute max meter” Ludwig have you ever played or seen anyone play sekiro? Because filling the posture bar is the primary way you kill bosses.
If he has played it I’m guessing he killed some bosses via health instead of meter… it’s still a weird comment though as the bosses in the speedrun are pretty easy to kill with deflections instead of health.
@@tatri292 yeah, and If u are not doing something that deals 1 damage(like aggy no sword run) u probably gonna kill them by posture than from health, as the lower the health gets the posture recover of bosses lowers as well.
@@AskTheMasked Unless you charge the Suzaku/Lilac umbrella by blocking projectiles with them. the follow-up attack can legit one-shot bosses if they're in the air (Isshin for example). The umbrella is my favorite tool just for the attack it gives, usually I don't care for defensive tools.
I would definitely recommend watching the Titanfall 2 Speedrun, as it is a really cool speed game with all the platforming tricks they pull off. Either the run you had in the spreadsheet, which given the time I think is the No Cutscenes Any% by Bryonato, or the standard version of the run by Zweek are amazing runs that do a great job of showcasing the game.
I still remember when I first beat Celeste and I was so proud of myself. I told my brother and he said "Oh, have you watched the speedruns?" I very quickly went from feeling like a god to realising how pathetic my run was compared to the top speedruns :')
Just as some feedback (completely my personal opinion), I would’ve been more likely to instantly click on this video if the title had said “The Best Speedruns of All Time”. As it was I scrolled past this video multiple times before deciding to click it cause there was nothing else to watch. Not sure if others share that opinion, just my personal take. The idea of watching Ludwig review all the craziest speedruns sounds better to me than… well, frankly I have no idea what this title entails. Ludwig playing Getting Over It? Ludwig reacting to one speedrun? Is it just straight clickbait?
Yeah I agree, I think that his stream was called something like that "Best speedruns" and something like that seemed more apealing to me. I had watched a bit of the Stream at some point so I knew what this video was about, but sometimes they just overthink it. Also wondering if somebody else thinks the same but the discord/twitter DM convo as a thubnail seems so cringy to me and maybe even low effort. At least try to mix it up, some channels seem to do that for almost all there videos.
I also thought this video was just an analysis of a single speedrun when I first saw it. I watched this after nothing else seemed interesting and I was pleasantly surprised that it’s actually a reaction of multiple top speedruns. Tbh I like Lud’s content but he has a habit of hyperfixating on a single thing that happens in the video as the “clickbait” he shows in the thumbnail. Sometimes it’s annoying because it’s only a fraction of what happens in the video, like 3 mins are dedicated to it in a 15-20 min video about a broader topic. I hope he realizes he can honestly use the general content idea for his titles and thumbnails (e.g. “The Best Video Game Speedruns”) and get the same, if not better, appeal to the viewer. He should only use the hyper-specific titles if the video is mostly about that specific situation, otherwise just stick with the general idea for his thumbnails/titles. But idk maybe this type of clickbait just works better.
It's just a faulty title. Your correction would have been better clickbait as a fan but ive never seen this channel and how hard "getting over it" is is universal
If you do this again, I'd like to see you check out a Portal 2 speedrun (or at least parts of it, because the world record is close to an hour IIRC). So many wildly different techniques that you have to learn, like all the cutscene/dialog skips, or something like CFG (Crouch-Fly-Glitch) with excursion funnels.
When lud started talking about how easy it is to find out who people watch it reminded me of how recently I was hanging out with some new mates and we were playing rock paper scissors for something and I figured out this new mate was a ludwig watcher because, even without saying 'do u watch anime?' He did the classic lud move "Imma go scissors"
the thing about celeste speedruns is that almost every jump requires more inputs than youd expect. Its not like in super mario where you just doing precise long jumps, you doing precise long jumps like also hitting a couple more inputs to get the fast version or even more to get the super fast version and chaining those together super quickly
Also on the Titanfall speedrun, thats canon now. In apex legends, which is a continuation of the titanfall series, Octane is a character with metal legs. This is due to the fact that he blew them off with a grenade attempting to beat the fastest gauntlet run which was beat prior (in the speedrun shown) using grenades to propel the runner forwards
i used to LOVE kingdom hearts 2 speedruns. Always thought the balance between rng and skill in those speedruns was so cool. Kingdom hearts in general is such a fun series to watch ppl speedrun for that reason.
The titanfall 2 speedrun actually has some lore to it. One of the character designers of apex legends made a character based of the way people used grenades to boost themselves in the trial, resulting in Octane, who likes to go fast but has artificial legs
@@carrotmaster8521 i think its stupid but you are actively handicapping yourself by not using it while its legal, so no hate to the runners. just seems silly to allow something that operates entirely outside of the game to influence how fast you can go in the game. but it does suck four runners who may not like it, because they are esssentially forced to use it if they want to keep up with competition in any meaningful way
@@joetaxpayer8180 That's exactly what's happening. A couple of the biggest opponents to the unban caved immediately and a couple more have given in since. I'm using the word "caved" like it's negative but I don't mean it negatively. While it's possible to beat the world record without a calculator, your odds go down, and Minecraft at that level is already a game of playing for very long odds.
@@Chunkosaurus Don't watch then. If you can't appreciate the skill that goes into learning how to cope with a speedrun that demands that kind of mental flexibility, watch something else. I hate calculators too, but the runners who wanted them unbanned had their reasons and luckily it only fucks with part of the game, not the whole thing. The ironic thing to me is that the one unambiguously good thing about calculators is they reduce exactly the other thing you're complaining about, the RNG. By quite a bit actually. Now any run that collects 20 obsidian (a sizable minority of runs) is all but assured a stronghold spawn without having to deal with randomly winding up 400 or 800 or 2000 blocks away. It takes time but it's very consistent.
I was watching this, hoping he'd react to the titanfall 2 gauntlet speed run. For those who don't know how crazy 10.10 seconds, there is a video on my channel of he beating it in what's considered a very fast time.
8:03 that’s what inspired the writers for the apex legends lore for octane. He blew off his own legs, getting the world record in the gauntlet by using grenades
Hi Lud, I hope that SRM really hasn't turned you off from Ocarina of Time speedruns as much as you said. In the OoT speedrunning community, the discovery of SRM only added categories, while keeping all the categories from before SRM untouched. There's a category for everyone and it just sounds like you need to find the one that you find the most enjoyable to watch (:
5:15 people make software that lets you see game mechanics, like for eg. what areas are loading when, when collision on the objects/walls appears, your movement vectors, movement speeds etc.
I really enjoy the speed runs from marathon where the crowd is feeling it. Like the Fallout anthology with explanations, super Mario Sunshine relay, goose game, etc so many gems.
Ludwig not wording that you pegged someone as a certain type of person who does a specific thing like "I pegged him as someone who watches small ant" Had me dying inside
That fucking Ocarina of time is the best thing ever, the amount of random shit that's happening and how Lud is just so distraught at everything as he should be, while the theme song just playing in the background.
I think the old Spelunky teleporter speed runs were some of the craziest things I've seen. A lot of RNG but still, you have to have Jedi reflexes as well as RNG.
i love just putting on speedruns and chilling in fornt of tv, i especially love tomatoanus's speedruns explained. titanfall 2 is just so nice to watch and enjoy
If you all love speedrunning, there's a whole bunch of video essayists out there who love to deep dive into the lore of the communities and just how broken some of these games are. They're really really talented. (totally not biased comment or anything)
OoT speedrunning is pretty diverse. From "Literally manipulate the code at the register level with controller inputs" to "Just go fast" to "Acquire all the gold skultullas in every dungeon in reverse order." And they ALL showcase a wide variety of glitches and strange behavior. The truly crazy thing about that game is how far you can take things before it literally stops working. It is somehow simultaneously the most broken and the most stable code on the N64.
Apex Legends fact: it's extremely well known but the grenade boosting during the Gauntlet speedrun from Titanfall 2 at 8:00 is how Octane lost his legs in Apex lore.
I like speedruns that show me tech I can use when I play. Like in dark souls 1 there are several skips you can use to get to the fun parts of the game immediately.
i love that lud calls livestreaming on youtube gaming "twitch streaming" still. he's really committed to keeping the viewer experience the same for us :D
at first glance it looks like you forgot Titanfall 2 from your list, so I wouldn't say the list is a list of the "greatest speedruns of all time". Edit: the tf2 campaign speedrun is way better than the gauntlet, but I'm still satisfied that it is on the list at all
