I was tired of using my wood screw and faceplate so I built this! Check out the list below for list of supplies you'll need to build this.

Spike plates are awesome. I already have the Amesgrigg spike plate and love it. The base is made from anodized aluminum. Your's is a much less expensive alternative. Thanks for sharing!

Amesgrigg spike plate is beautiful. Someday I’m buying one of those.

Nice build. I prefer to start between centers or my favorite method is to use my homemade spur drive made from a 3" face plate. I started with a Penn State faceplate with the center screw chuck screw. I ground the center screw to a point. I tapped two of the face plate mounting holes and added hardened bolts with the tipped ground to a knife blade point. These stick out just short of the center point. It's basically a mini version of the Oneway Big Bite spur drive that mounts in a chuck. I like starting between centers so I can balance the weight of the blank. It's much faster to start roughing with a higher speed. Plus, I can manipulate the blank to get the exact balance of the wood grain, or in the case of a natural edge bowl, I can get exactly what I'm looking for in the way of balance. I suppose if you had a bandsaw or real nicely squared blanks, this method you describe would work great. Making turning life easier is nice and I'm glad this is working for you.

I was trying to remember where I got the idea for my spur drive and it was from the Elio-DR Drive sold at the Woodturning Tool Store. It's one of Tod Raines's designs but they are used with a #2MT drive. I don't like using any drives in my #2MT. There's nothing worse for your lathe than an unbalanced blank being driven by the #2MT. His design uses spear point bolts but I found that those didn't work as good as bolts ground to knife blade points.

I made mine similar to this using steel wood screws instead of the spikes, an old piece of plywood, to keep the cost down. Mine works just fine, cost zero dollars, it took me 10 minutes to make.

Thanks. That's straight forward and easy. I wonder if red Loctite would keep the spikes from working loose.
@anthonycima7
@anthonycima7 2 года назад
Most likely. I end up removing the spikes as necessary depending on the diameter of the piece. I wonder if loctite would make that a pain in the butt???

@@anthonycima7 If you use the "Red", yes. It's more permanent. The "Blue" is not but holds well also. It's for disassemble later. Your Lowe's should have both in the glue area. The Blue may be in a red tube, but BLUE will be on the front of the tube.

I would have liked to see you actually attach that to a bowl blank. Why not use the worm screw instead of that bolt? Id think the bolt length limits the size of blank that you attach?
@anthonycima7
@anthonycima7 2 года назад
I was constantly struggling with the worm screw spinning out or not having enough grabbing force and wanted something that could handle 20” diameter blanks. The bolt is only there as a centering device. A person could always use a longer bolt with their spike plate because it just threads into the nut secured in the plate.
@mikebowline4812
@mikebowline4812 2 года назад
What holds the blank against the spikes? The threads on the bolt do not look coarse enough to grab. What am I missing? Can you append this video showing how to attach it to a blank?

I don't understand how this will help. You still have to find the center of your piece and drill a hole. Where's the advantage over a wood worm screw?
@anthonycima7

Better grip for faster blank roughing.

This drive will allow for some rebalancing on the TS end and works better with blanks that may not have a perfectly flat surface.
