Full face helmets are all upside: reduced risk of head injury and no bugs in your teeth.

I wear full face. I rode in a 3/4 in the 70s as that was the common best choice. It makes a difference in the experience though. One side effect may be an increase in speed and therefore a desire for more speed/ripping HP. I have noticed that as a change over almost 50 years of riding.

The downside is that you will drive faster and increase substantially your risk of accident Those that don’t wear helmets are the safest riders, therefore the risk of making an accident in the first place if you wear a helmet increases substantially (almost twice more likely) If you see on the street, full face helmet drivers are those that drive most recklessly, do lane splits and do speeding on the highway

A "Two Guys" $17 helmet saved my life when I was 17 years old. I hit a bucket loader and was thrown 30 feet. 1/2 inch grooves in my helmet. Doctor said I'm dead without. FF 30 years and riding in a group with my FXDL and as soon as we hit NH all the lemmings whip off their helmets. Except me in my Shoei and it occurred to me....I'm the only rebel in this group! BTW I also owed a 2000 Busa along with the Low Rider. Loved em both. Just touched totally different parts of the brain but in equally cool ways.

The 26 years old requirement is because employers insurance has to cover children up to age 26 on their parent's policy. This was a provision fought for by several large employers in the state that were seeking to avoid being on the hook for long-term life support for the children of their employees and it's effect on premiums for group policies.

I am not a proponent of helmet laws, and have lived in a few states where helmets are or were not required - CT, FL and PA. I was a volunteer firefighter/EMT in CT and we carried a snow shovel on the rescue truck year-round. Made it easier to clean up the motorcyclists who weren't wearing helmets. I started riding with my cousin at age 13 - always wore a helmet. Got my own bike at 22 - always wore a helmet. I got t-boned about two months ago and the sound my helmet made when it hit the road scared the hell out of me. I am so glad I was wearing a good helmet. Good helmet, good jacket, good pants, sturdy boots, good gloves. Yeah I've got some aches and pains that are slowly resolving, and I got some stitches in my leg where a zipper garage on my pants leg got ground into my shin by 800 lbs of motorcycle - only 3 stitches, but nothing serious. And I was only doing maybe 20 mph at the time I got hit, and the car probably less - they turned left into me. A friend of a friend got into a very similar accident without helmet or gear and suffered a skull fracture, spinal damage and broken back. I almost walked away from my accident. BIG difference. The other driver's insurance company gave me a fair settlement for the bike, and agreed to pay for the damaged gear, too. I bought a really nice AGV Tourmodular helmet in white (matches all my other helmets except the yellow one I was wearing when I wrecked), with built-in Cardo comms, and a Brake Free helmet brake light. I replaced the pants with the same ones - Tourmaster Trek pants, and got some new summer mesh pants.

In FL we commonly see many riders without helmets. Check on bars and you'll see many of them having several beers and going out to ride together. I never understood that. Yes, helmets are not as comfortable as we'd wish (especially in hot humid FL) but our brains are more precious than a bit of comfort. Ride safe folks so you can keep riding for many years.

Thank you for this weeks video. I live in Springfield, Missouri. It seems like we lose a rider every week here. I talked to a local police officer who told me most deaths are caused by excessive speed and the rider not wearing a helmet. He said if you removed those 2 factors, the motorcycle deaths would be reduced considerably. I am encouraged by all of the comments from those who choose to wear their helmets.

I had an accident in January 2024 where I was wearing a helmet. I didn't even feel an impact on my head. I am currently in ICU three months later because a vein in my brain was most likely ruptured during that accident. I was losing dexterity in my right hand, arm, leg and foot. After draining the clot, my dexterity returned. So head injuries might not manifest themselves right away.

I was a volunteer in the ER at a hospital in Dallas when I was 14. One day a couple came in out of a motorcycle accident. I think the guy was already dead. I got t-boned when an inattentive driver ran a stop sign. I flew off the motorcycle, and landed on my head - other than a torn pant leg at the point of impact, none of my street clothes were damaged. Fortunately, as I always did and continue to do, I was wearing my full face helmet. My lower left leg was mangled and nearly amputated. But my head and brain stayed intact because of that helmet. I think if they’re going to make helmets optional, there ought to be a release of responsibility for society. Any costs or expenses (medical treatment, rehab, care for dependents, etc…) that are incurred by someone riding without a helmet should 100% be on that rider, not on society. Good advice. It’s amazing the number of people eager to make full use of their right to do the wrong thing.

Good, every state should do away with helmet laws for individual adult riders. Having said that, I always wear a helmet and always will. But state governments have no business creating laws that infringe on personal risk decisions as long as the decision in almost all cases only impacts the individual. It would be the rare case where a rider not wearing a helmet would cause him/her to injure someone else. There could be the rare case where a helmetless rider gets hit in the face my a bug, causing him/her to lose control and crash into an oncoming car. But that rare case does not outweigh the infringement. The matter should be between an insurance company and bike owner/rider. Insurance asks if you wear helmet. If you say no, your rate is some multiple higher. If you say yes, your rate is lower. However, it also stipulates if you are getting the lower rate because you say you wear a helmet and you have a wreck and injury while not wearing a helmet, insurance does not pay.

Since I am a rider who has laid a two-wheel bike down a few times, I can tell you the theory that a rider can hold their head up and never allow it to hit the ground holds about as much water as a strainer. I have watched YouTUBE video's of riders on the "Tail of The Dragon" who would have died if they didn't have their helmet on, but the theory that they are immortal is just plain stupid. Even if the state I live in dropped the helmet law, I would still wear one. I wear a 3/4 helmet with a face shield and could still receive facial road-rash, but the noggin' is protected.

Here in Michigan, we've had the no helmet option since 2012. You're supposed to have $200,000 in medical insurance coverage though.🤷🏼‍♂️ But, apparently, most helmetless riders choose not to have insurance at all, and possibly not even a motorcycle endorsment on their licence, according to government statistics. Oh, and also you have to be 21... Lol Recently, a report was released which showed that, while motorcycle accidents in the state have actually decreased in that time, fatalities have risen by 34% and more than half of the riders involved weren't wearing helmets. Also, in that same time period, insurance premiums for riders have went up by 21% when adjusted for inflation.

My State: Michigan. 2022-Fatal motorcycle crashes have jumped 34 percent in the decade since the Legislature allowed those over 21 to ride without helmets, even as crashes have decreased. According to data from the Michigan State Police, the number of crashes involving a motorcycle decreased from 3,600 in 2012 to 3,158 in 2022. At the same time, the number of motorcyclist fatalities increased from 129 to 173. “Naturally, the more safety equipment you could wear, the better off you are,” said Lt. In your opinion. With 5 pounds on your head and a strap holding the helmet snug, it will snap your cervical spine, leaving one a paralyzed from the neck down. Seatbelt laws are not to protect you from yourself, they are to hold you in place to offer an opportunity for you to have some control over your vehicle - to protect others. A motorcycle crash on the other hand will have no such opportunity, helmet or not. If you loose control, it’s lost. I will always error on the side of personal freedom. That said, if you choose to not wear a helmet, you deserve what’s coming. Someone will point out the extra cost to the system of that poor choice. But if you pay taxes you are entitled to every public service those taxes pay for. You have a right to those services whether you’re an idiot or not. Well, at least the tax paying idiots are.

@@impalaSS65 such an American response! There are some things you are just required to do in a civilised society - have a drivers license for example. Not drive drunk. Obey traffic lights. Wearing a helmet is another one. Just like wearing a seat belt is required in the name of safety, a helmet is required too. We have safety laws for a reason. It’s why you can’t legally do a lot of electrical work at home yourself. And don’t give me that line about Americans having more freedom, it’s just not true.
@impalaSS65
@impalaSS65 5 месяцев назад
@@chrisnielsen9885 So what, if it is an "American" response? You mean as a debating base line, assume a grown man is is in his right to decide for himself? In that case - thank you for the compliment! I am a Swede, by the way. We are not known for being a beacon of freedom, so your compliment made my day. More freedom is better - all else equal. Your examples conflates individual risk taking with exposing others to a risk. Knowing the difference, is crucial for becoming a mature citizen. You want to waiver your right to decide - it does not nullify my rights. You might be an authoritarian, if you need to oppress others to feel "safe". "We have safety laws for a reason" not necessarily. Critical thinking is required to see which laws are necessary and which are emotionally motivated. You mention electrical work. Depending on where you are located - you can do a lot that is still dangerous if you are unskilled. Reparing/swapping a termination of a single phase 1~230VAC (not to be confused with the US three phase 3~208VAC) lamp, corded drill, amplifier, microwave etc. Yet in the great wisdom of our political retards, I am no longer allowed to do the simple entry level teenager work of routing cables on the wall, mount sockets etc, while leaving the connecting to the fuse board and the termination of the sockets to an electrician. "Drunk driving" is an emotional example - grown up men with a modicum of science background knows there is no such thing as "either/or" when it comes to alcohol intoxication. The fact that men are so much faster in reaction and so superior in spatial perception than women, can be likened to a sober woman being on par with a heavily intoxicated man. The actual competence is obviously not the target for the law. A man that haven't slept for 20h, is more dangerous than a rested man after a six glasses of beer. So the natural variations of danger/incompetence "allowed" by the law, is greater than any emotionally motivated legislation aimed at deemed "anti-social" behavior", seen from the eyes of the insecure authoritarians. Seat belts, helmets, ABS, etc,etc. are cost driving options - i.e. choices for me to make. Burning down my house when the neighbors are at risk, is a different story.

It even says on the back of the helmet this will not save your life or prevent injuries. The helmet limits your Peripheral vision, hearing, your site line.etc The statistics have shown that helmets will paralyze you by severing the upper portion of your neck where the helmet ends. I live in Florida and we dont have helmet laws here, however I wont even ride to the Dollar Store a few blocks away without my helmet. I dont understand people that will not wear helmets, but having said that I will absolutely support their right to ride without a helmet. If people want to choose to be stupid then let them! It is their choice and their choice alone. With the way that 95 percent of people that drive cars drive they have absolutely no right to judge riders about how they ride. Cagers drive way more recklessly than most riders and are usually the ones causing the accident with riders to begine with. This trend of everyone wanting to use stats to literally take the basic right of choosing for oneself how they want to live is ABSURD! If people want to risk their lives in such a way it should be their choice and their choice alone. You, me or anyone else DO NOT have the right to impose our will onto others simply because they want to do something we dont approve of. They are the ones taking the risk, no one else, so we have no right to demand they wear helmets if they do not want to do so. The number of deaths DOES NOT MATTER, it is their choice and I will support their RIGHT to choose for themselves.

If a person is unmarried with no children and has life insurance to cover their funeral, then I can basically agree with you that it's a person's right to choose for themselves whether or not to wear a helmet. However, married people, and especially married people with children, should not just think about it being their right to not wear a helmet. They need to consider how much their spouse and their children will be affected if they die because they refused to wear a helmet just because it was their "right'. People need to grow up and become responsible. They need to think about the fact that they can possibly save their families a lifetime of grief and lost opportunities if they would just have been willing to do a very simple thing like wear a helmet. So should government make a law that a person must wear a helmet? I lean toward saying no.... but it's such a simple and easy thing to take 5 seconds to stick a helmet on your head and it often saves children from a lifetime of sorrow, so really I think it is no worse than government making people wear a seat belt. Maybe it should be a law. No actual bad consequences seem to happen to people in helmet requiring states compared to non-helmet requiring states.

Great video 👍🏼 my wife and I have been wearing a full face helmet while riding our motorcycle. We lost a friend on a ride a couple of years ago the investigators mention that he landed face first into the pavement. Could a full face helmet prevented his death. We’ll never know. Up to that point we rode with a modular in the 3/4 position all the time. But I will never ride without a full face helmet. Even in the Florida sun and heat never a problem for us.

Having served eight years in a midwestern statehouse (NOT Missouri!) I would wager the life insurance requirement as done at the behest of life insurance issuers. I can imagine the state legislator who was hesitant being lobbied with "Well, at least he'll have life insurance, if you require it." Sorry to be cynical on a great post, said differently, sorry to be so experienced in a state house.

I prefer to wear a full-face helmet in almost every situation. However, when the temperatures start hitting over 90 degrees, I switch to a modular helmet so that I can open the face at stops. I take a half helmet with me when temps get over 100 and on short rides with temps over 100, I wear that half helmet. Probably 1% of my riding or less. I despise heat.

A few PA folks say they ALWAYS wear a helmet, but want everyone to join ABATE and help them keep helmets optional. They say it should be personal choice. I say by that logic speed limits should be suggestions, seatbelts should be optional, Maybe "Notice: frequent cross-traffic" should replace stop signs? And I'm fully serious only about the seatbelts in cars. With airbags, those things are FAR less necessary than helmets, but PA won't budge on seatbelts because no advocacy group is fighting against them.

Due to hardship i started in 2 wheels to school at 12 (moped) 1st motorcycle at 14 with a hardship DL for the family car (father blind, mom died) i am 57 in 2 weeks... that's 45 years of riding on the streets. I've been down 2x. Once on the interstate, once in town at low speed. A half helmet and a 3/4 helmet both times. I did ride a lit with no helmet...got lucky for being silly... but the last years I'm a full face guy all the way. Modular, actually. My state doesn't require a helmet... but i plan to ride to 100 years old and beyond... so i actually ride with Bohn under my jeans and an armored mesh jacket i layer in winter. I used to ride a ton off road...went down a LOT! Full gear helps mitigate the pain, lol.

I never wanted to live with wires holding my jaw and teeth together for seven years, while they hopefully heal, when a full face helmet can keep my face and jaw from slamming into the handlebars in the first place. Plus even a minor head injury can turn you into a ward of the state or a dead person. Your brain + asphalt = asphalt wins every time. I'll wear a full face helmet every time.

This is the main reason I won't pay the AMA for a membership. While I like that they lobby for motorcyclists rights, I can't stand seeing part of my money going towards fighting helmet laws. (BTW, my state repealed in the late 90s and had something like a 30% increase in unhelmeted deaths. I'm sure it's bad in all the 20+ states they've done it, heh.)

I live in a no helmet state. I have lived in another no helmet state, 40 years ago, and I felt safe doing so. Then. Now, I had been riding the less than a mile to the grocery store, without "bothering" with a helmet. I wear one any other time. Until yesterday. Yesterday, my battery crapped out and I had to pop start my DL1000XAL8 in the grocery store parking lot. And, even though I stayed on the right, even though I wasn't going faster than six miles an hour pushing the bike, I was nearly hit three times. The last, I had to dodge right between two parked cars. I never even got myself up to speed to mount the bike, let alone pop it. That last dodge, I reinjured my damaged rotor cuff from 18 months ago. If you ever, while pushing a bike at six miles an hour, and have to take a sharp right turn while running on the left of a nearly 600 pound motorcycle, and stop it without hitting a car, you'll know why I got hurt. The lady driving the Subaru did look up from her phone in time not to hit the parked cars or cart return rack. But not before she had gone through the space I had been occupying. A thanks to the two guys who saw what happened and came to help me bump start the bike. You guys were life savers. If I can get near misses in a parking lot, without the bike even running, I'm not safe on the road without a helmet. The other downside of not having my helmet on, was I didn't have a camcorder to capture that ladies license plate, because she ran off and I would have loved to share video of the top of her head with the police.

Oregon has a helmet law, last September I had an accident on my bike and it was at a blending corner and I got off into the pebbles and I hit the curb and it spun me around and I was thrown off the bike. I ended up with 2 broken ribs, broken shoulder and broken bones in my foot, along with a concussion. The best thing about my injuries were I was wearing a full-faced helmet. When my head hit the pavement the vent cover, where my mouth is was almost ripped off. Had I been wearing a half-hat or a football helmet I may not be here. This accident happened at about 15mph. It also happened 3 days after my 74th birthday! But I am still able to get older!!

I agree, but it’s a pointless discussion. Some people simply ride for far different reasons than those of us who watch this channel. I feel the same way about alcohol and tobacco, but those substances remain quite popular. To some extent, I envy riders who don’t wear helmets (and people who smoke and drink) because it must be wonderful having absolutely no care in the world regarding physical health. It’s just a different mindset. I can only imagine how freeing that must feel.

For me, the issue isn't the clear benefits of wearing a helmet or the inevitable Darwinism associated with allowing adults to make their own poor choices. The real problem is that tax payers are sometimes on the hook when the worse happens and they become a ward of the state. Get rid of the social safety net, and issues surrounding everything from eating unhealthy, to tobacco use, to motorcycling all become easier to deal with.

I have no idea how anybody can ride without a helmet. I'm a mostly touring rider, I put in high miles at high speeds on the interstates (though I rarely ever break the speed limit) I wear a one piece full face helmet (not one of those modular types, I don't trust them to stay together in a crash. I have ridden close to, if not over a million miles, and I have never crashed. I did try riding without a helmet once, wearing only Walmart sunglasses. It was brutal. Those sunglasses didn't help at all. I felt like I was in a tornado. I couldn't see anything, and I was getting blasted in the face by all the debris that was in the air at 80 mph.

I know full face helmets are more effective, but I just love the convenience of a 3/4 helmet. So I always use modular helmets. They’re the best of both worlds. I’m sure they’re not quite as safe as a standard full face, but they certainly beat anything else.

I’m amazed at people’s reasoning. Many riders say NO to helmets of any kind yet they will insist on having an Otterbox or similar phone case for protecting their phone from sudden impact. ( pocket computer) Are you not concerned about your own computer controlling your body function? I respect your choice even though I don’t understand it.

Laws shouldn't be used to stop people from doing stupid things. They should be used to stop people from doing stupid things that hurt someone else. While I think you're stupid for not wearing a full face when you ride, I have no right to force you to wear one, nor does the government. 🤷‍♂️

You're coming off data to your benefit. I fought for motorcyclist rights to choose to wear a helmet or not. And safety administrator for the state of Indiana we networked with other states proving that it's not the helmet that saves your life or ends your life it's the surgeon that you come into contact with after an accident. If surgeons know what they're doing they can treat head injuries, they do it all the time for workplaces. So why don't you look into some of that data! To each their own, but don't spout data when you're not really projecting numbers 50% could be eight people died as opposed to the previous number of two.

Do helmets and riding gear in general save you from death and major injury? Yes. Should anyone be made to do something as long as they're not harming anyone else? Absolutely not. If you wanna die, die. Should there be a law that people wear riding pants? I feel the same about any law that tries to protect you from yourself. I wear it all. All the time. But if you dont want to, you shouldn't have to I'm the same with seatbelt laws.
