@yes he didn't say PLUS. He said "+100", which can mean EITHER "Plus 100" or "Positive 100", and given how often the phrase "negative IQ" is used it is not the fault of the reader for misunderstanding, as the writer failed to communicate correctly.
That is honestly incredible that you are willing to review people’s essays. As a student (albeit not a college or collegiate division one) sometimes parents are not the greatest peer reviewers nor are one’s fellow peers (students). Having someone else’s opinion in a way like this is so beneficial to learning and confidence. Thank you!
We were told that the introduction of an essay has to be structured in a very specific way... so technically I'm plagiarizing my own previous essays and every good essay introduction in my school
That's not really plagiarism. But I'm genuinely curious, is everyone in your school doing the same thing in their essay intros? If so then it might not be a good idea to do that as well, don't you think? The colleges are definitely going to compare you to students around you (in your school and locality) and if all your essays are similar it would significantly lower your chances as compared to if you'd taken a different path
@@anonymousperson3023 Any modern university worth their salt would refuse an essay for that. Self plagiarism is a plagiarism. In my own university the rule of thumb is, if you submitted an essay in a subject and received credit for your work, you can't submit the same or a very similar work in another class. Of course, having a similar structure in an introduction is not a problem.
I used to create an essay in my highschool years about a certain topic, and when i submitted it the teacher asked me if i copied it from somewhere else, which i didnt. Few hours later, while there's an awarding happening in the courtyard of my school, i was asleep in my desk, and suddenly my classmates started waking me up and told me to go to the stage as soon as possible Apparently, i won the essay contest, announced my name, and i went there half asleep. This just reminded me of that for some reason

in the UK every essay for college and university is processed through turnitin (turn-it-in) which compares it to everything ever written and gives back a similarity score / percentage .. 20% is an acceptable score as there’s only so many ways to word a lot of things, especially when we’re all potentially writing about the same thing
I haven’t plagiarized (or at least not intentionally) but there were times I quoted a whole paragraph from my source to get the word count up. Teachers and professors never said anything or reprimanded me so I guess it was fine as long as I explained the quotes relation to the thesis.
My teachers literally told me to do that for an essay, I think it was called APA style referencing, and at the time I just wrote the essay without any research just out of my own mind but my teacher told me I had to apa reference so I took like a chunk of quote and apa referenced and then she gave me a grade
Citations and quotes are fine, they just have to be clearly marked as such (citations get references, quotes get quotation marks and attribution). What you can't do is take someone else's words and pretend they're your own.
Quotes aren't plagiarism, as long as you make it clear that it's a quote and where the quote is from. Plagarism is when you steal somebody else's work and try to pretend that it's yours. Knowing how to quote and include other people's ideas with the proper credit is an important academic skill. As you go through education your teachers should help you learn when it is good to use long quotes, and when to use shorter quotes, or put the idea into your own words but still give credit.
See what I did once was I came up with a good intro paragraph and the first body paragraph. The rest of the required 5 paragraph essay was the Bee Movie script formatted to the best of my ability into an essay. I say once because I will never have the courage to do that again. The only reason I did is because I was very overwhelmed with how little time I had to complete it since it was due at 11:59pm and only had two hours and couldn’t think of anything so I wouldn’t be able to complete it on time if I actually tried. Never again. To much stress on if the teacher would know.

Yup, it’s sad to see how many people in this comment section are gonna be caught some day. I mentioned it in another comment, but one of my dads students accidentally told my dad he had plagiarized, and instead of getting a C and passing, he got a 0 and didn’t get to graduate because he failed the class
I believe it’s already too late but I submitted my mfa essay to USC already. I remember watching the videos thinking about ways to write like these other kids so I can get in to. I spent everyday making a timeline of my life and writing down notes and little tidbits from memories. And then it hit me. It’s a personal essay and no one could see it but me and the admissions person, so I just sat down in my room, locked the door, put on some dim lights, slipped on the headphones and told my truth. I wanted to tell something that was honest about my identity and what I truly was behind closed doors (lettuce greens bacon and tomato, if you catch my drift) The prompt really cut me open, but the blood I spilled was mine. For the people who are looking at this comment and thinking this person is a fuckin weirdo. That’s exactly it! Write that you’re a weirdo, but be proud of your weirdness because that’s u and then relate it to the type of weirdo you want to be in your career. I wanna learn how to make movies that teach about befriending and accepting the weirdness. So I wrote that.
This happened to me (the victim of plagiarizing). It was during a time when we had to do the state assessment, I had missed the whole week since I was in the hospital, so when I came back they made me do it right away. The next day, they told me that I had gotten answers from my friend (reminder, I was in the hospital with no phone) and that I had also plagiarized my essay. They made me do it all over again, I ended up getting even a better score. So perhaps, it’s just the teachers and the systems fault thinking I was cheating when I clearly wasn’t.
I had an essay I did in highschool and only used a Britannica article and my teacher used a plagiarism tool that the school gave us. I had severe panic when she gave me a zero because it said 90% of my essay was plagiarized from several Wikipedia sites which involed mostly parts like "The city" or random statements. I was also supposed to use a lot of quotes from my article which I did which made everything a lot more yellow. I promptly cleared it up with her after fighting her giving proof I didn't use Wikipedia.
My current teacher used to teach Greek mythology. He gave his students an assignment to make their own story. The student just plagiarized the story of narcissus and didn’t change anything about it. Like how did they not expect him to know it? It’s is job to know it for gods sake!
I once helped a friend with an essay, did the first paragraph and then they got mad at me because I wasn't doing it the way they (friend) wanted it, so I left them to finish it on their own. After it was reviewed and graded, their Prof said that the first paragraph is so well written that it was "obviously plagiarized". My friend got upset but I was yelling so happy that my original writing was college level while I was still in highschool. This friend was bringing me down and holding me back from my full potential so I cut them off lol
Fun fact: teachers have websites that they can paste your writings into and see the percentage rate of how similar it is to any website. So don’t cheat yall

Depends. Sometimes i write amazing essays because the subject truly interests me. And then other times its 2 pages of me saying basically nothing becausw i dont care enough.
I usted to get a lot of comments about how I was plagiarizing because my essays "couldn't possibly be that well written". I would smile and ask the teacher the supposed original source from where I had plagiarized. Sometimes they would try to check and when they didn't find anything remotely close to what I had handed in I would just stay quiet until they gave me my grade. Like yes, Sandra, I know most of your students can't write for sh*t but some of us know how to write an essay properly.
Omg same thing happened here! I've got crazy good academic writing skills and my teacher just straight out accused me of plagiarism because it was too well written. And praised other kids who had written worse than me. Turns out, those are the kids with about 70-80% plagiarism. I slammed my turnitin report in her face and it was only 3%. God, I wanted to strangle that bitch, she did it to me before too 😊
I was all in, completely believing you-until your last sentence. Your usage of the word “redact” is awkward and completely incorrect. As an English teacher, I would believe that you are a good writer-but I wouldn’t accuse you of plagiarism because you are clearly still developing your vocabulary. I am sure that your English teachers realized this too!

One of my friends told me that he just looks up topics in a different language, translates it a few times (since translations differ a bit each time), switches a few words to be more grammatically correct, and that’s how he writes essays. He’s almost done with college lol. Me, on the other hand, I got caught once for plagiarizing, got a zero on the assignment, and never did it again because I was too chicken.

Sometimes I wish I had more characters to write with but then again I don’t want to write an essay. In Australia you don’t need an essay but for good schools you need a fuck ton of extracurriculars which I didn’t know about until applying. I’m on a wait list at the moment for a top Uni but I think I’ll go to the one that accepted me more easily.
Nothing wrong with choosing the lower schools, top unis are great but they can be much more stressful, places like Harvard have an insanely stressed student body where even school valedictorians will begin to question their enrollment, at the end of the day a shiny degree is a shiny degree and most jobs look for experience more than anything anyways so the higher education will only get you so much further ahead

The only thing that ever shows up as plagiarized for my essays (with an online software), is my last name, and the sources I was plagiarizing from are my older siblings college essays…
This is why I avoided watching any videos about applying to colleges and about college essays, I believe watching videos and getting training to write your essays ruins the purpose of the essays. The colleges want to hear what you have to say, not what some tutor or English major thinks you should say. If this means that I don’t get accepted into certain colleges then that’s fine by me at least I know that I told them about my genuine self
I do the complete opposite, I’ll add words that make it seem like I’m texting someone or intentionally make the grammar wrong. If you make it look to robotic then it’ll automatically raise suspension and the chances of it getting flagged
I do the same thing. The only thing I change, is to also make the whole thing awkward like I wrote it. I just take the ideas and the words and just shuffle them and remove the more “advanced word” or replace them with more simple wording.
I'm always terrified that one of my essays will come back as plagerized even though I've never cheated for them, luckily you can just run it through a program to see what percent is plagerized so my anxiety has lessened
I went to a certain type of college and I didn't plagiarize my work but everybody else did because I could clearly see it and I was the only one who graduated with a master's degree on that type of college.
In 6th grade they refused to accept my grandparents address, and randomly unenrolled me near the end of the year, theyd only accept my moms address, so i had to move. I had just left an abusive relationship and was now going to a new school. About halfway through the school year, the teacher said that he would make a group assignment, and the dumbest kids would be the ones to choose the groups. This may sound very harmful, but everyone was aware that he was just referring to the handful of boys who just messed around the whole class and never got anything done. The next day, he said that 5 students would choose the group, he chose 4 other kids, and then me, i was apparently one of the dumb kids. I had failed to make any connections to anyone all year and when asked for kids names so i could create my group, i ended up picking names at random unaware who those names belonged to. I hadnt even realized how low i apparently was in my teachers head until my group got together. I knew all of these kids were actual flunks. They never did anything. I came to the realization that the teacher thought i was dumber than those kids. The group constantly argued and disagreed, and the teacher offered the girls another assignment so they wouldnt have to work with us. I ended up doing most of the work, presented in front of the class for the first time since 6th grade (which i was also humiliated in) and sat back in my seat. I didnt think it turned out too bad compared to others. The next day we recieved our grade. I got a C- because it "sounded plagiarized" while the part of my group who broke apart got an A even though they failed every other assignment and never did anything particularly well That fucking destroyed 7th grade me
@@user-pj7ur2pk4t in 6th grade I entered a relationship, it was all happy and fine, and then all of a sudden after summer break she was super narcissistic, she'd constantly harass me, blame things on me, she'd make up fake scenarios and play them off as true to make me think she didn't care about me, I ended up hating myself but I went through some of the worst shit I've ever experienced for several months because I was under the impression that she'd return to normal when school started again, I wasnt a flunk in that class, I was doing well, and I wasn't some 7th grader with the brain of a baby, I was always ahead of everyone and they considered having me skip 3 years but avoided it because I was short and they didn't want me to be bullied
