You must try out some more bass setups for high gain tones! Darkglass, mesa, markbass, ampeg, gallien-krueger are all great options to try out

Quilter Labs makes something similar. They have for years. For those who don't know who Quilter is...Patrick Quilter is the owner of that amp company. He is the "Q" in QSC Amplifiers. Yup that power amp company.

Even though it was just a room recording, much preferred the tone of the Boogie and how it sat in the band. The DG seemed overly “clacky”. The Boogie had more depth and warmth but had the appropriate edge on it. I’ve never gelled with the DG stuff I’ve tried in person.

Yeah, the 4x10 and 1x15 is moving way more air for sure, but I get the trade-off in portability. I play a 4x12 cab that weighs 130 pounds. It's massive and sucks to carry around. I bet if you added a 1x15 to the Darkglass rig it would be as good or better than the Mesa.
@Skoora
@Skoora Год назад
@@rhythmless1 I don’t think it would make a difference. The sounds are so radically different in their EQ, a slight low end increase, if any, on the Dark Glass isn’t going to address the top end and clacky-ness it has. They’re just two very different circuits. Differences in speaker brands might make more difference from the EQ curves they put on the amps.

@@Skoora Look at how he has his EQ set. I run a slight low mid/mid push on my AO 900 amp and there is no clankiness. The darkglass stuff is pretty versatile tone wise but a lot of people just want that clicky clanky sound.

@@C0nnie It’s definitely very cool. I think he sold off pretty much everything after Sleep during the years he kinda disappeared. One of the benefits of being in the Bay Area is a lot of the old Sleep and early High on Fire (my friend’s Matamp 200 used to belong to George Rice) was floating around for awhile. Hank III has a couple of the Green 4x15’s now. Thankfully my friend’s amp is in my rehearsal studio so I can play it occasionally.

I'm not a bassist, but that Darkglass sounded great to me. I wanted to ask about that Squier PJ bass because I'm looking for something affordable to use for recording. Would you say that upgrading the pick-ups is a necessity or could I get by with the stock pick-ups? I don't really need pro level performance, but I'd like to have something that at least sounds fairly decent.

That’s probably my dream bass rig right there….definitely the DG212N (the E was a typo apparently)…not sure if I would go with the Microtubes 900 or the Alpha Omega 900 I currently have an older 1970s model Fender Bassman 70 head and cab (about 260 watts together but all tubes)…that setup was a gift from my uncle but I don’t think I want to keep it due to the weight!

I played through a Darkglass Alpha Omega 900 watt head through a Darkglass 4x10 and I didn't care for it, which is weird because I love my Microtubes B7K Ultra pedal. But it was at a Guitar Center and I didn't have a lot of time with it. Current I have an Orange OB-1 running through an Ampeg Classic 4x10; maybe I need to look at the Darkglass 2x12, cause you make it sound good, Kyle.

So I snagged a darkglass alpha omega 900 from a Pawn shop for 500$, it's sitting on top of a fender rumble 1x15 and 2x10 cab because I was using a rumble 800 prior, also have a sunn 1x15 and 2x10 for pratice and live shows.. I too am a guitar player playing bass and am not a snob lol so I have a 5 string j and 4 string p with upgraded pups and bridge, and just snagged a sterling musicman ray4 and had it set up and they all slay! What I don't get about modern metal is how the bass occupies nearly the same frequency as the tuned down guitars. To me this makes modern metal sound flat and hollow when compared to metal from the 70s -90s

@Jimijam22
@Jimijam22 Год назад
My guess on the microtubes is he prefers that circuit. I’ve tried both and I prefer the Alpha-omega, as for the 2x12 over the 2x10. 12’s usually have a better response to high end and sound brighter than 10’s. As far as cabs go I’d get a good 4x10 just because they’re loud, and sound really good in a metal band stage setting.

@@Jimijam22 Thanks for the intel! I have an Ampeg 4x10HLF and an Ampeg 8x10 classic (but I'm essentially retiring the fridge). Both are rad, but after seeing the smaller Darkglass cabs, I've been considering one of the 2x10s. Now I have to decide between that and the 2x12. lol
@Jimijam22
@Jimijam22 Год назад
@@The1stsuperman both would be a good choice, just the 2x10 will sound a little darker than the 2x12. Can’t go wrong with Darkglass stuff. I run the AO through a fender rumble 4x10 with Eminence Legends in it.

@The1stsuperman Год назад
@@Jimijam22 Looking at the 2x10, its rated at 500 watts while the 2x12 is 1000 watts. Not sure if that will make difference or not. When I get my amp, I'll try out the cabs at my local shop I guess.
