"Riots in china is very rare" maybe this is the reason why we Filipinos can fight even some us are untrained because riots and brawls are common here. When I was a kid, I wonder why chinese who visit Philippines was beaten by some average bystanders since chinese knows kung fu. Now I know, because kung fu is ineffective.

I know why xu chooses not to fight "students" of these masters. Because it allows for ringers to happen. I suspect that a master would hire an actual fighter, not his own students to fight xu. And lets say xu does win, then people would just say "nah he only won because the student is just that a student, he is only still learning, inexperience, doesnt encompass or entail the chinese martial arts that i teach". anyways choosing to fight a "student" allows for a lot of variables unforeseen, allows for alot of underhanded things to happen behind the scenes. And i expect that some of these chinese martial artist have a lot of money. And considering how much information is censored in china, the likelihood of the people finding about a ringer is even less likely. Side note. that zhou hon chun guy is only a tai chi master till he gets beat/loses to xu. Then tai chi community will just say that master is a fake, a fraud who doesnt know TRUE tai chi. that seems to be the repeating follow up whenever one of these tai chi masters get beat.

Well this is repetitive. A master says he can beat Xu. Xu beats him. That master then blames on diet, bad day, bad Feng Shui, etc. Then another master says he can beat Xu. Then it becomes a cycle. They never realize. You spend your time doing something, you get good at it. You learn boxing, get in the ring, have some sparring, then become good at punching someone in the face. You learn Muay/MMA, get into some street fights, have some injuries, then become good at K.Oing someone on the street. You learn dancing with staff/sword, playing with wooden dummies, then you will be good at just that. When a TMA pratitioner and a MMA practitioner get in the ring to have a KO match, it is always a losing fight for the TMA one.

In my humble opinion, I think it is appropriate for Xu to challenge these Masters. In the old-old school karate tradition it would be called a dojo-yaburi or dojo challenge, in which the challenger makes a formal challenge to the dojo and fights everyone one-by-one. From the absolute beginner to the novice, to the intermediate, then the advanced students, and then finally the senior instructors. If he wins he simply thanks everyone for their time and then leaves. If he loses then by tradition he may stay and become a student. Another way of challenging another dojo would be to assemble a five man team and challenge another dojo with their five students. And these ten students then fight each other one-by-one as a means to prove the school's training methods and their martial art. So do I think it is appropriate for Xu to go around and challenge Masters - absolutely yes - but the big question is what is the protocol?

@@BD90.. Don't need to take my word for it. This video is what I mean about display of vigor, control, precision and movement. Please take into account this is WuShu and it's designed to be very showy and entertain. However when it comes to passing your Staff or spear tests you have to show this level of control, vigor and movement for your Sifu to pass you. If you don't, it's automatic fail in their eyes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yzJis7VvORY.html This one is a video of a Shaolin Monk displaying spear technique. Same thing, you see vigor, control and precision. The end of the spear point must travel in a STRAIGHT line and never curved or bend in a sloppy manner. When you whip the spear then you MUST show the spear bend to develop that whipping power. If you fail in doing any of those, you fail. If you watch that so called master use his spear at 0:06 watch the end of the spear point, its not traveling in a straight line forward and back into his hand. He is SLOPPY, lacks control and precision of movement. This guy is a fraud, no Sifu from the old days would ever pass this fool.
@YourManifoldWorld
@YourManifoldWorld 5 лет назад
Also in Kung Fu culture, the staff is the first weapon you ever learn and the staff techniques you learn there passes on to the spear. This is why if you can't control the spear that means you never mastered the Staff in the first place. I used to do Kung Fu and it was mandatory that you do your staff techniques properly, in Staff training the whipping of the staff is absolutely vital. You literally had to develop so much power at the end of the staff that your staff bends completely. If you fail to do this, you fail to pass. Don't think the staff is flimsy either, its thick and tough.

This is going to be long, so I apologize up front. I've been watching the debate on MMA vs traditional for sometime. So maybe a slightly different view. Sometimes people negatively comment about listing the "credentials" but my own path may give me a slightly different perspective. I'm nearly sixty, and I've been fighting for 55 years of that time. My dad was a boxer, GG and Army and coached boxing, I started boxing when I was 5. I grew up in one of the worst parts of East Los Angeles where fighting was a regular occurrence, even in the 60's. I boxed until I was 17, and when a small Kwoon (dojo) opened in town, I started studying 5 animal style Kung Fu of the Ark Wong lineage. After a few months of studying forms I absolutely thought, this is great but when do we learn to fight. So coming from a boxing background FIRST definitely changed my view on learning kung fu. But the sifu, Gilbert Bates, was also a PhD in Asian philosophy, so I started reading everything I could find as well, and stuck with it. And I began to see that the "fight"...was in there. Later I studied Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, fought full and semi contact karate tournaments in the early 80's, I worked in bars for over a decade in my twenties and early thirties, and again, fights were common. After losing to an akijutsu guy (not akido...great ground fighter), I started studying Katori Shinto Ryu in a very traditional setting (hard to find in those days), and again, the boxing foundation gave me a slightly different take on how the hand to hand waza, might be applied in a street fight. And I ended up being one of the first Americans to learn Genbukan Togakure ryu ninpo. Oh No! Not one of those guys LOL. Yeah, a lot of what is shown now seems watered down to me, my training was different. Before judging, I suggest searching AKBAN on youtube. So whats the point? First, I'm a huge UFC fan, from day one when there were no rules, and by accident, my own approach is mixed. One of the observations made back when Karate tournaments were all you had...street fights usually end up on the ground. You need to spar, or fight. There are two mental barriers you need to break through. The first time you reaize someone is trying to hit you and...the first time you realize this guy is trying to kill me. All of the fights I've seen with Xu Xiaodong, I've had the same thought. This is the first time this guy has been hit. They turn their head, step back when they should step in. And the same for a lot of other videos involved in the debate. "Everyone has a plan until they get hit" - Mike Tyson. So do traditional styles "suck" . We forget that China and Japan both went through cultural revolutions designed in part, to take the fight out of fighting. In Japan, Jutsu (skills) became "do" (the way ). Kung Fu became Wushu. That doesnt mean that the arts themselves, are not combat effective. People have been killing each other with their hands since day one. It stands to reason that they developed efficient ways of doing so. Look for the "fight" in what youre learning, I dont care what it is. Is chi fake. In all these years, I've never seen someone defeat a resisting opponent by waving their hand and they guy drops. BUT...I have experienced being hit with a force that was disproportional to the mass and bio-mechanics involved. I believe that Chi exists. Its the difference between living wood and dead wood. More importantly, we diminish ourselves as human beings when we dismiss the esoteric. Regardless of your style or religion, I recommend reading the Shingon texts by the Monk Kukai. Will a lot of what is taught as self defence "get someone killed". In the wrong situation...absolutely. But being choked by a guy in a bar and rear naked choked by Bas Rutten are two different things. Some training is probably better than no training, the liklihood of encountering a trained UFC fighter is slim, and most people do not have the time to commit to the kind of training it takes. AND (heres where hopefully I dont make the MMA guys lose their minds :-) in a street fight, some of the principles used in ring fighting, are equally invalid. Its a combat sport. The most brutal unarmed combat sport in history probably, but it focuses on 1 on 1 combat situations. In my experience, fights rarely happen that way. Theres no mental preparation, you don't touch gloves, no one stops the fight when they think you've had enough. It starts because some guy thinks you ***** his girlfriend and he blindsides you with a beer bottle, and you go into it with your bell rung and blood streaming down your face. And if you get someone in a lock, he isn't going to tap out, and his friends aren't going to watch you choke him out. Someones going to kick you in the head. So...maybe there's validity on both sides. Again, sorry for the long post, if you train at anything and put your heart into it, you have my respect. As human beings, I believe we need to be more supportive, and try to elevate, rather than tear each other down. Peace to all.

I watched his split/rollback/push with his student. His structure was broken and it was just a shove , no fajin. Like most modern Taiji masters he trains with modern floppy wushu weapons , the swords are to light and POB is wrong and the spear is made from the wrong wood, to light and to short for real traditional taiji spear. This means you will never gain a true understanding of the weapons from the form nor how the practice is meant to improve your boxing by what it is meant to teach/emphasize and correct. Another master that has bought his own blag believing he is a boxer like his masters 2or3 generation ago. The original taiji boxers were not genteel calligraphers, many were illiterate, they were what would be considered thugs today, or solders and bodyguards. They were men that liked to fight and did. Yang Ban Hao was a very famous taiji master, he didn't friendly spar he fought crippling his opponents for life and is remembered for his bellicose nature and brutality in boxing. Some of the latter students were intellectuals but they were never taiji boxers. These modern masters have never trained nor taught like the real taiji boxers and their self delusion only brings shame to the memory of some of the greatest boxers China had. You are correct Jerry , he will not beat Xu, he will get hurt and lose face.

@@mogwaijizm872 That Xu keeps beating up old guys that have never been punched before in their life. I'm not on any teams either. I'm just talking about reality. It's part of Xu's gimmick to beat up "masters". Because he can say I beat the best the "master" and it's easier. With actual trained fighters someone one older and more experienced is a advantage. Up to a certain point. Early 40s with pros but you can be a bit older as a non pro Vs another non pro. Like I said a young person who isn't trained could get lucky and overpower him or catch him with a powerful punch. This guy has probably never been in a fight like all the other old guys Xu beat up.

Most traditional Kung fu is for performing not actual combat. It is a way to look good while moving your body, and can be described as an art form. Indeed there is a lot of training and heart needed in order to master a traditional martial art, but at the end of the day it is just that, an art. If it hasn’t been tested through combat, then you have no basis to say it would triumph over MMA. MMA on the other hand is the result of years of tried and true combat. It is the result of the clashing and mixing of a myriad number of fighting styles, which was finally simplified down. In conclusion while TMA has its own value as an art style for performing, it would never stand on its own in combat against MMA. To suggest so would be disingenuous and ultimately harmful to those who are looking to learn to fight.

The problem of fighting the students is that you have to be sure the student is a student. The point of Xu fights is to prove that Kung Fu does not work in a fight. Every time that a supposed "student" of kung fu come to the ring, the guy is clearly a Sanda or kickboxing expert paid for it. Even if he studied Kung Fu at some point in his life, he does not use any Kung Fu at all during the match. On a second point, part of the mysticism of Kung Fu that Xu hates is the idea that an old master is more dangerous than his students: size and body strength do not matter, technique matters. An old master should be basically a supernatural beast from the legends. The age advantage is there of course, but the fact that there should not be any age advantage is part of those claims that Xu wants to debunk.

It seems a lot of people including OP miss the point: Xu never said he's even on top level of a fighter. He only said he can beat most if all these claimed kung fu masters! Xu said an average professional MMA fighter might beat him easily at the moment. Also, a lot of the happened fights are resulted from the masters' challenge. Xu is being challenged everyday, and lots of them are just trolling him. He posted once how a guy made a serious call saying he would give Xu more than $1 000 000 for winning and demand no money if he loses, then the second day that guy said he was just trolling for fun. There's also a recent video Xu posted that a 30ish 130 kg challenger was beaten by Xu's 51 years old 70kg friend. And the challenger got a broken bone after the fight and is now suing Xu and his friend. OP can find and post the video.

On one side of the coin you could say he is rigging it by insisting he fights the master who is often older, but then on the other side you could say if the art is any good then the techniques should win the fight on their own despite age.

I felt deeply inspired by this video, Because as was spoken quite well in this video, the quality Chinese martial arts is always at risk of declining. I intend to go out of my way to help improve the situation by proving and setting an example that genuine Chinese martial arts, if understood are in fact something very useful, as the man elicited wholeheartedly. I sincerely intend to do this by focusing purely on the core aspect of the Chinese Martial Arts, which sets them apart from everything else. That is Nei Gong, a function that can only be acquired through the in-depth Philosophy & Methodology associated with the Chinese Martial Arts. When incorporated in the training, this sets in motion and initiates a process in the mind, body and spirit of the individual, which can allow one to attain inner peace and freedom, but also if perused diligently will result in the eventual cultivation and acquisition of Nei Gong. In my humble statement, I have acquired an entry level understanding and ability of Nei Gong through my own training of Tai Chi and combined life experiences. There are some tests to determine whether an individual is on the right path in cultivation Nei Gong. These are known of by some experts in in Chinese Martial Arts community. I have elicited one of them in my presentation video on my channel below. Very briefly though, I haven't gone into detail as to how it is applied in Martial Arts, but if a person is wise and they watch me say this, they will have an entree level understanding and get a rough idea of what other such tests could be used to determine whether an individual has basic Nei Gong skill. As I say, I feel and share this urgency, that was spoken during the video. It has always been with me, I have gone through many grate lengths to help enlighten people as to the real deal. And I intend to continue with this and here is my first video in this series, which I have embarked apon. This is my youtube Channel ru-vid.com

Nice health benefits for him. However, when I see his large stomach, my first impression is he has no cardio. Although he can boast he has plenty of qi of whatever, that qi is not cardio. Once he starts clinching/wrestle with an opponent, his mind will register for the first time that he is out of breath and the "oh shit" moment will hit him. Let's just enjoy his awakening.

The thing I found somewhat remarkable in this video about how prepared a master is for a fight with Xu is that there was no sparring, no bag work, no conditioning and no grappling. Basically, it looks like pretty much every other taiji school, with a bunch of people gently attacking the air for no clear reason, and experience has shown us that those kinds of schools don't develop fighters. I don't know what the story is between Xu and the students, so I won't opine. For all I know he's said yes to those fights and they're just saying he declined. Conversely, the students could be pro kickboxers who wear taiji uniforms, which is not all that far fetched. Yi Long, for instance, uses this ruse, and I've seen a number of sanda fighters compete in taiji uniforms against karateka before. But I don't think we need to go that far. The master being discusses is too old, but if Xu is denying for fear of a real fighter, fake taiji master, he should aim for someone in theirs 40s, which is roughly Xu's age, who has a very long documented practice of taiji. Perhaps one of the grandmaster's favored students who has a school of his own. The thing is, Xu's a name brand. He doesn't have to take fights with people's students, no more than Anderson Silva has to take fights with BJJ blue belts. At some level, you need a pedigree to be worthwhile, or otherwise you'd have to take on thousands of challengers.

Xu should scout out the top students of the geriatric master and challenge several (4 or 5) of them to decide a representative from among themselves to fight Xu. The geriatric Master will have a pool of 4 or 5 approved top students to choose as his representative. Xu cannot be viewed as being unreasonable.

He might win a dance competition with those moves, but a fight ! No chance. Why don’t they just give up and just say what they practice is good exercise, and put it on par with something like ball room dancing or yoga. Its just not a functional martial art for most who practice. Otherwise it would be all over the internet with practitioners kicking ass, but it’s not, and most you do find is a Kung fu or Tai chi guy throwing his traditional moves out the window, and replaces them with what comes naturally, just throwing wild punches with the chin up in the air.
