This Tetris Technique Shouldn't be Possible

NES Tetris is guided by innovation, with a new playstyle recently dethroning one that was on top of the scene for 33 years. However, what happens when a player introduces something new to an "obsolete" technique? This is how Moja314 shocked everyone.

NES Tetris has had several dominant playstyles throughout it's 33 year lifespan. First, there was the built in piece movement system, DAS. Shortly after the game's release, 1990 Nintendo World Champ Thor Aackerland found a method to move pieces at 12+ times per second on a Nintendo controller, with the term "hypertapping" being coined right afterwards. Just recently, a new playstyle invented by Cheez called "rolling" ended up obsoleting the previously mentioned techniques, but that doesn't mean that innovation ended for them. In fact, both DAS and Hyptertapping maintain fanfare in the community, and in Moja's case, he was able to introduce something new to tapping that allowed it to compete with rolling, and the results are incredibly impressive.

I love that you're making super high quality videos about modern nes strats that are easily accessible to non tetris fans. Been showing these to my roommates and they love them.

I put on one of your videos for background noise figuring I wouldn't get too invested because it was "just Tetris." But you are such a good storyteller and editor that I ended up binging all your videos. Great work.

I greatly appreciate this comment, and I'm glad that I was able to help introduce you and others into the Tetris world. My work is heavily inspired by another great Tetris creator called aGameScout. I highly recommend checking out his channel if you haven't already: www.youtube.com/@aGameScout . In the meantime, I hope to continue improving my storytelling and narration capabilities to help introduce more people to the amazing Classic Tetris Scene :)

Nice vid! Would've been cool to credit joseph for the invention of hyper quicktap. Not sure if moja learned it from him tho
@okCobalt
@okCobalt Год назад
This is true, apologies for not mentioning it in the video. I had given the background for how Joseph first used the hyperquicktap (and how Moja adopted it) in the video I did about him back in February, but parsed over that and neglected to mention here.

I dont think it's wise to consider his playstyle as Hypertapping. It's way more similar to Butterflytapping
@okCobalt
@okCobalt Год назад
I would consider butterfly as directly alternating fingers in each tap, but given the slowmo, Moja favors one hand (which takes up 4 taps) and only uses the other hand for punching in additional taps. I would say that definitely skews away from butterfly.
@DrMegaGaming
@DrMegaGaming Год назад
@@okCobalti see you, personally i tend to expand the definition of Butterflytapping to incorperate any method ofusing 2 or more fingers on the same button. regardless if they alternate perfectly or if they do a weird pattern. (not including pushing up thecontroller using multiple fingers which is Rolling obviously) i see it this way because if you include Moja's playstyle into the umbrella of Hypertapping then that expands the term so much that you can include pretty much any way of tapping the button which is not in an alternating way. for example what stops you from using a 3rd finger and also calling it hypertapping? or maybe a 4th. se where im going, if you allow 2 fingers to still be called hypertapping. whats the limit? the more accurate term for moja's playstyle might be "multiple finger tapping" but that's long so i just use "butterflytapping" as its shorter and is already known. Really im just arguing that Hypertapping should be defined as: Jitterclicking on the DPad with 1 finger.

Hmm... I just remember playing as a kid in the 90's so many times. I also remember going into a negative score when you hit a certain level. I was so focussed at that time starting level 19 and max out at around over level 300. Over level 190 it was so glitchy that a 4 lines score just jumped you up multiple levels. Like from 190 instantely to 202. And when going higher 1 line just gave a level up. Playing in the early 90's without Smartphones and cameras and beeing at around 10 years old and home alone.
