Reading the comments, you're obsessed with this 'deter a reseller' thing. Ever heard of a 'target market'? What they are telling you is that they set the prices for those dolls with the intention of selling to an end user and not a reseller. They want their store to be a place where people can expect to consistently find a good range of toys to buy for their kids. If they set their prices too low, resellers come in and scoop up all the good stock leaving the shit behind making for a pretty poor shopping experience for others. Many op shops set their prices at 1/3 of eBay prices as a rule of thumb. $7 was spot on. And your whinging about bagging multiple dolls together is ridiculous. It happens all the time. They were selling their monster high dolls for $7 and throwing in a few bonuses. Get off your high horse.
@plsspayorneuter
@plsspayorneuter 13 дней назад
Bagging several loose small toys together makes them less difficult for people to steal, too. Bags are opened/changed for no one. Period. Why? It takes work and materials (however minimal one might view it) to put a bag together. Taking them apart for one person, possibly in front of other customers who might want bags opened or might do it themselves and cause messes or steal, is not going to happen. And yeah, a if a 6 year old was obsessing over a doll, we'd be more tempted than if a grown man requested it from several employees, but we still wouldn't do it for the reasons above. I volunteer at a thrift shop and I resell. It's seeing grown adults get bent out of shape over stuff like this that has us disliking resellers.

Personally I think it was wrong for you to request to cherry pick the bags of dolls. Yes thrift shop profits go to charity but that is not the only function of thrift shops. They provide an opportunity for the less fortunate to buy products at a reduced price. I do not think it would be fair to cherry pick all the good dolls and leave the shit there for the less fortunate to buy for there daughter. One good doll in each bags seems like a very fair practice. Would you have paid more for the bag if you were permitted to have all the good dolls, because that would have devalued the remaining 2 bags?

@@TheAussieFlipper What's the issue then? I doubt VERY much they would have split the dolls up for a non-reseller, or parent, or ANYONE. It's common practice to bundle desirable items with non desirable items - you hypocritically admitted you do it yourself. I'm sure the volunteer made the "we only do it to deter resellers" comment just to make you personally back off. I mean hanging at the back door after being told no and asking to speak to the manager? That's arrogant & would have intimidated the female volunteers. I'm not surprised they said that to you.

i've said it a few times and i'll keep saying it. My concern doesn't lie with the price of the dolls, nor the fact they were bundled up. My concern lies around the reasoning as to why. doing it to deter a certain customer (reseller) is wrong in my opinion. They said that's why they did it. If i hadn't as asked to speak to someone I wouldn't have found out that that is there reasoning. If they had of said we're doing it to sell off the cheaper dolls I'd have 100% agreed and accepted that without hesitation but I got frustrated when they said they were deliberately doing it with a front of mind thought to limit the ability of a certain group of customers. Not very good business practise and it does not make sense to me at all. We are a huge part of what they do whether they like it or not.

As a part time reseller myself, I have found some local op shops charge way too much. One store I pop into now and then researches any brand and prices them according to eBay listed prices, not sold prices... I hardly go there anymore, I think they've cottoned onto the reseller thing and think why can't we do the same. Needless to say they don't sell much of the stock at high prices and always seem to be lowered eventually.. keep on thrifting and move on.. definitely more bargains to be found.. I found a mambo loudshirt for $7 sells for about $130.

They would not sell them to her for the lower price. People in the queue were mortified, not only would it have been embarrassing to ask but to be told no is appalling! I thought that was exactly what charity shops were for, to help those that need it. Had I been the volunteer, k would have given them to her and helped her chose some more. Yes the greed is horrible. They don't give clothes away they'd rather throw them away. The amount of good items they take to the dump is shocking. Sorry to be blunt, but you are in the wrong. It's standard merchandising to put a more valuable item in with less valuable items. The goal is to make more sales and not just in thrift stores.Department stores and more make grab bags or mystery bags that are the same way. It's even done at yard sales. It's not just about resellers. It's a sales tactic that is very common. I've NEVER seen a business that would let any customer shift items around and create a new bag with only what they want. Honestly, I'm a bit taken aback that you would think this was an acceptable thing to ask and then be upset when you were denied. You asked, they said no, and you still pushed it because you didn't get your way. And you wonder why they don't like resellers!? Could it be because they've had to deal with others who are equally as pushy as you were? I've seen resellers do this kind of thing too often and IMO it's one of the behaviors that gives us a bad reputation.

Just wanted to play a little Devil‘s Advocate here and give you the opinion that I see, but again this is coming from a helpful place not to give you any hate. I’m not a reseller myself, I enjoy watching your videos because I love watching the op shop part of it. I’m a young Mum with not much money left at the end of the week especially now with the cost-of-living so only am able to buy things from the op shop for myself and son. For example, if my son was in to Monster High I wouldn’t be able to afford normal prices or eBay prices and would be upset seeing a reseller trying to move them from the bags and take that $7 opportunity away from someone who actually wants the dolls to keep. I do believe the op shops are now charging way too much and being too greedy but at the same time they are an opportunity shop being able to give opportunities to people who are less fortunate. Let’s not also forget the people who work there are volunteers, they’re not trying to make money. Maybe they want to deter resellers or maybe they are doing it this way to allow someone to buy it that actually really wants the dolls not just to resell on. Again no hate, I do love your videos just wanted to give my perspective.
@TheAussieFlipper
@TheAussieFlipper 2 месяца назад
100% see your perspective Bree and thank you for the comment. I’m sure you can also see that your son might not want both a barbie and a monster high doll. Packing the 2 items together for the purpose of deterring a reseller doesn’t really suit your example of customer looking to buy a doll for less than retail value. A smarter move from this store would have been to price the dolls individually.. pricing up the more expensive dolls if that’s what they want to do. I fully understand the less fortunate customer angle but I don’t purchase large scale amounts of product I shop the same quality as anyone else in these stores and I shouldn’t be made to feel guilty for my buyer behaviour / purpose

Long time viewer/subcriber. Seems a bit of entitlement on your behalf. Have you thought about one of the other reasons why these charity shops exist? Not only raise money, but to give an opportunity of those less fortunate find good product. 3 little girls could get a bag each with 1 quality doll in it. But nah, man wants 3 good dolls. It is what it is, ya just have to navigate it. You are resourceful and have always found ways and means. TBH this trend has been goin on for quiet awhile in US and given your US connections are not aware of such things. You know me I don’t walk into these places coming out with bags of items. The shops got plenty of stock for those less fortunate. The fact of the matter is you can’t discriminate on any customer no matter what there intentions are with the item they’re purchasing. I have equal right just like the next person. I’m also doing a lot more good then harm. (Watched further) I'm sorry Matt, but I really think you're in the wrong with the dolls. Ultimately, its up to the shop how they are processing/pricing items, and we as customers and resellers just have to live with it. Perfectly fine to ask in the first case (although I would argue its a bit cheeky), but if the answer is no you have to just respect that. These volunteers and managers work hard enough without having someone making their day more difficult. And to be honest, your 'rant' really comes off as entitled. Yes sourcing in difficult, but that's our problem, not theirs. We have to adapt.

I hear you. Like I’ve said it’s not about the dolls for me. It’s about the motive to deter the reseller. I was looking to speak to the manager because that was my hunch.. I thought that’s what they were doing but I was shocked to hear after speaking to them that that actually was the case. Hence my frustration. If they had said it was because they wanted to move the lesser valued items and this was their sales tactic for doing so I would not have a problem at all. That’s the reason I wanted to ask the question. In 4 years of visiting these stores this is the first time I’ve ever questioned something. I know the sort of person I am and in no way was I ever rude or forceful with the staff in store I was asking to find out the reason why which I am entitled too.

The main reason op shops exist is to get goods to people of limited means, and why a lot of people donate stuff (they certainly don't donate so you can run a business for profit from it). The store would have to reprice, regroup items, find things to complete the bundle to make it sellable again. It’s a lot of extra work for them and I don’t think it’s worth the business’s time. I get they are wanting to move a little extra stock and get a little better money for it. To specifically single it out as a tactic against resellers is not right. The thing is would you go into Woolies and get three boxes of different flavoured ice creams and ask if you can take some from each box and just buy that? Would you be happy for someone to pick and choose one or two games from multiple listings on your store and expect you to take those listings down and sell them those games and have to recreate the listings? There are only so many things that they can know about. I have found my local thrifts will have certain things that get over priced and make it impractical to resell. But there are also plenty of other things that show up so cheap because they can not have the knowledge of everything. I can honestly say though the two local Salvos stores near me, I have never found a single item to buy the resell. Not because of price, but just so much absolute junk that is overpriced, rarely if anything that even looks half decent.

I said, I’m sorry, that’s not for me then. She looked at me like I had just ran over her dog. The point that they were in the $5 bin, and then the volunteer tried to change the price at the register, was the frustrating part. Like you, I’ve spent thousands there. Thrift shops are also known as Op (opportunity) shops, and they are run by volunteers to raise money and support the community, with the opportunity to buy things they could otherwise not because of price. If a kid gets a $50 doll (as you priced it) with a parents $7 budget sounds great to me, even if they never know the value they can tell quality. I think we all know what it’s like when you walk into an op shop and it’s been picked clean of anything remotely high value (by resellers or others), just treat it as if you are choosing to share the hidden gems this time, and hope someone who buys it gets the joy of using it.

Wow wee. I went into a chemists the other day and they had bundled up some toiletries ie, two tooth brushes, three toothpaste and two deodorants. I didn’t like the combination they had bagged up I only wanted the good items. But I think I know why they do this. If they have old stock they need to move they don’t sell it cheap as they know someone may buy it all and resell it (so they bundle) Big stores do it as well . Big stores also limited customers to buying only a few items when they are highly discounted. (to stop reselling) The op shop lady told the truth and I am happy with the truth, they are trying something out. They could be proven to be wrong but that’s up to them as a business. Yes they have to operate as a business nowadays, they can’t just be a charity its getting harder to make money. You’re a full-time reselling of new and used items. So you're bagging out a store because they wouldn't change their bundling methodology that you youself use? If they just said no would you have just left in peace? Or is business that bad that you have to pick a fight with a charity for $5? Seems like you were triggered hard because they used the 'R' word. They're trying to balance getting the item sold with trying to get as much as they can for it, hence why they don't want too much extra margin going to resellers, can't blame them.
@TheAussieFlipper
@TheAussieFlipper 2 месяца назад
In my opinion their number 1 priority is to deter the reseller. If they had of said we’re trying to sell the cheap ones off by bundling with better ones fair play, makes sense. But they said they’re doing it to deter resellers. If a kid comes in they’re going to either want a barbie or a monster high so bagging them up together is a silly way to market the item. The smartest way to do it would be to sell individually. Cheap ones cheap, expensive ones priced up. Not that the item matters at all, it’s the mindset behind why and I don’t think it’s right

Absolutely insane to me that anyone is taking Flipper to task. 1) an op shop is there to provide revenue for the charity, not to provide cheap stuff. 2) if the point of the shop is to provide for poorer citizens, then who cares if resellers take the "good" stuff, value is subjective especially for kids. The shops will never run out of stuff! 3) If he bundles then he has more reason to because he has to make margin. An op shop is making cash no matter what they price it at! Capitalism works by allocating resources efficiently, which is what a reseller is doing by taking an item from a static location and putting it online. 4) Related, that's why op shops are cheap. To get as many customers in. A reseller charges more because the demand for their particular item is higher. Economics, people! 5) I have noticed stores placing prices stickers over bar codes of books, it's just petty and passive aggressive, nothing worse. Flipper was being straight forward, which is an admirable trait everyone should adhere to.

The sticking point was that I had to go to the atm machine because I was at the flea market and the vendor preferred cash as opposed to zelle. I never mention I resell items, op shops originally have been there for less fortunate people to purchase items they genuinely couldn’t afford new. Unfortunately for those people, the prices have been hiked up and are sadly out of reach for the majority of low income customers. I have been on eBay since 2004, back then everything was dirt cheap, costs rise and everything thing goes up, it’s true. Also back then most people didn’t know that people resold items on eBay. Now it’s probably well known especially by charity outlets due to the amount of social media platforms that people are spreading the reselling information. It’s done now, no going back to the way it was, we now have to contend with $20 Levi’s - $30 RM Williams etc. I have been in Adelaide for the last two weeks and have been to about 25 shops and the prices are ridiculous. I’m thankful that I now live in the country where the prices are still cheap.
@tomoliver2961
@tomoliver2961 2 месяца назад
There are two points of view here. 1. The shop makes money which goes back to the charity and as such the request was reasonable. 2. My understanding is originally these shops were made to sell cheap items to people who need them. The idea is the item is sold at a nominal price ( much lower than market value ) to help people. Resellers coming in and buying the item takes away the opportunity for the person who needs it to buy the item and they get the item cheap. So from that perspective I can understand not liking resellers. This is why you are seeing prices go up in thrift stores because they are realising their clients are changing ( resellers ). This generates more revenue for the charity but ultimately hurts the people they want to help in the first place. I can see both points of view but I feel like in your commentry you are not seeing point 2. I say this with no judgement and love your vids .

Some thrift stores are not charity. The charity shops donate the funds from sales and do not give away the merchandise. The resellers are just other shoppers and should be treated as such. This wayward idea that some homeless man can't find affordable pants and the resellers are taking it from them isn't true. There's still hundreds of pants there. Don't blame the customers for corporate greed. It's not called inflation it's called greedflation. They're making record profits and still raising prices on purpose.

Not to be that guy but there are much better methods to ship cards. First, tape being used anywhere in the process is a big nono. You never want the chance to introduce that stickyness to your hands and or the card. Second, top loaders aren't very good for sending cards, especially anything of higher value. The reason is because they still allow the card to jiggle around in the case, causing edgewear and other issues. The safest method is using a card saver (semi rigid protector that keeps the card in place), sandwiched with 2 pieces of cardboard and held together using elastic bands (obviously avoiding them being too tight) and a plastic self sealing baggie. Top loaders are only for storing cards in a location where they will not be moved. Grading companies don't even allow submissions with them nowadays because they were causing too much damage during shipping.

Our Superstore Manager is always happy to negotiate a deal but when people see a new item brought out and then ask for a discount moments after it is placed on the sales floor it's a bit much. We really don't care what the purchaser does with the item after they pay (resell, use it, give it away or destroy it) We have a number of regular customers who are resellers and they usually buy up big without much hassle. Matt.... I live in an area where all the thrift shops are overpriced. I just dream of days of finding stock to resell at the prices you regularly get them for. I've regularly agonised over the balance between goods priced for the battler to buy vs resellers to pick up a bargain to make money. The reasoning behind the Thrift shops raising funds for their respective Charities can often be affected by the price points. I agree, if prices were reasonable, the stock would turn over much quicker, and in the long term, more charity $'s would be realised. Our local Thrift shops regularly reject goods because they have no space left. It is a tough balance I guess. On the matter of the doll's, I can fully understand their packaging thought process of mixing good with bad. No different to all the bags of plastic figurines that contain a mixture of high and low $ items that are sold in those outlets. Sometimes, taking the higher road and sucking it up is a better outcome. The Volunteers in those places are tremendous in what they do and the time they give.

No question.. the item for me is irrelevant here, it’s the larger issue at play for me. But if we’re speaking of the dolls they should in my opinion price the lesser expensive dolls cheaper and put a higher price on the more expensive. A child is going to want one or the other. They’re going to be into barbie or monster high. They aren’t going to want both and neither is a reseller. So the whole bundle them up to move them out (which wasn’t there reasoning anything) isn’t very practical in this situation

Hi Matt, I’m surprised that the volunteer mentioned it was because of resellers. At the end of the day, as you said, places like Salvos, Lifeline etc, are looking to make money and more often then not, couldn’t care if you’re a reseller or not. As a dad with a young son that loves nothing more than buying toys, the reason they do this is primarily to sell the less desirable stock by making customers buying that one desirable toy. That is how it should have been explained, not because you’re a reseller. I’m surprised you don’t buy more from fb marketplace though. Whilst it’s few and far between, I’ve found some great buys on it. Especially video games. I almost feel that the reason there isn’t as great of stock in op shops, is that people are selling their unwanted goods on fb, rather than donating it.

I don’t think you’ve done anything wrong by asking the question but you have to respect the owner of the shop by accepting their decision. Agree with with comment it’s channels like yours unfortunately that make them more aware that resellers are around and they don’t like ‘gifting’ items anymore knowing you or whoever is going to profit from them rather than the items go to ‘needy’ who can’t afford essentials. It’s a dog eat dog world now, prices at some thrifts are like on eBay now as seen in one of your recent videos

the local op shop to Me actually had some items listed on ebay, which i thought was a good idea for them on some items. their bundle idea might not work for general public who also don't want to take the junk home and put it in the bin for an overpriced single doll. some of the prices in these stores are more expensive than retail. they really should focus on turnover and giving out free stuff rather than binning a lot of it also.

When shipping cards always put painters tape over the top of the top loader so the card doesn't fall out. I've been collecting, selling, trading cards for over 30 years and I've bought many cards off Ebay over the last few years and since there's so many people who got into the hobby for the money and not the collecting aspect of it they don't have a clue on how to properly store/ship cards and I've received plenty of damaged ones because the card isn't secured properly. Just my .02 when it comes to packaging cards.

@TheAussieFlipper Oh yeah I love the cardboard on both sides taped down I just know from experience the card can fall out without painters tape.

I would have just paid what they were asking, but that's because i like having the dolls on my shelf while i wait for them to sell. It sounds like you were pretty rude to them. They said no and you went and stalked them out the back to pressure them into giving you what you want. I know you said you were "just asking", but as females, they probably felt really intimidated at having been followed. (I know you said that's not what you did, but it obviously is) That being said, i still enjoy your content and put this down to your growing frustration over ridiculous op shop pricing. I agree with you that they should lower their prices so you can buy more, but i wouldn’t go asking them to split bags, because i know they've done it deliberately and also as a reseller i hate when buyers ask to split bundles. Best of luck finding stock on the future. Probably wouldn’t show my face at that op shop again for a while. 😅

As a female, I agree. I know it was probably not your intention to intimidate, but as a female we can feel really scared. You going to the back might have frightened them, and they may have perceived it as you trying to physically corner them - especially as you are a tall and fit dude

@@sunnykel7573 if you were in the room you would see there was zero forcefulness in body language or speech. This narrative needs to stop. I didn’t stomp my way to the back room. I have actually been banned from a Gold Coast thrift store from buying to many item's and i asked to talk to the manager for the reason and her words were you visit us upwards of 3 times per week and buy to many items which is not fair for other customers. My response was whats the difference between my money, which is guaranteed than someone not buying the item's which may sit on your shelves for days weeks month's. Then i was kicked out and asked, not to return.

No offense but problem is your ruined a sourcing spot. You probably no longer welcomed in their and thats the problem. They put them in bags and perfect justification because if something is to high walk away. I dont even ask at thrift stores instead stay friendly because sometimes they will hook you up on stuff you like. Asking for manager is a straight Karen aka Chad move. Time and energy is monwy and people want to avoid drama and you bring drama which is sormething they dont want.
