Join us for this talk by Will Hutton about his new book, This Time No Mistakes in which he shows how the right and left have gone wrong over the course of the last century - and how we can remake a better Britain.
Britain's inability to invest in itself is at the heart of our problems. The malevolent thread linking the grievous errors of the last forty-five years is the attempt to create the utopia of free markets and a minimal state. The terrible consequences scar our country today. Hutton argues we need an alternative economic and political philosophy, especially if we are to ward off a nihilist populism.

Increasing taxes on capital gains, the wealthy, and inheritance might seem like a straightforward solution, but the reality is far more complex. Take, for example, the aftermath of Brexit on "The City" - it suffered a significant blow to its revenue streams as American, Russian, and Chinese investors no longer find it as appealing to funnel their wealth through UK financial platforms. With the loss of easy access to the vast European markets, the City's allure dwindled. Now, if we were to impose additional taxes on capital gains and the wealthy, we risk further crippling what remains of the British economic engine. History shows us that the wealthy are adept at finding loopholes and tax havens, as seen in the case of Dyson's relocation. So while the idea of targeting the rich might sound enticing, the practical implications could be detrimental, ultimately driving them away and exacerbating the issue.

Is it worth taking that risk if the gains of Britain's economic engine seem to flow towards fewer and fewer people. A great economy doesn't really matter when median wages are so stagnant.

Indeed. We're not wealthy but we buggered off last year. We have a child who's also off to dubai for 5 years to earn enough tax free to be able to afford a flat in London. So it's not just the "wealthy". It's people just trying to get a foot on the ladder. With many low tax programmes opening up in the world, expect more flight. To add to your Dyson list Ratcliffe and Best have gone to Monaco and the crown dependencies are very busy right now. Wishing the UK the best of British.

but it is a success, a massive one for the rich and thats the point no? There are tens of Trillions hidden off shore - how about getting this back for the public good, they give not a jot about the public good.
