That's cool! Wish you could do a more detailed tutorial about converting this lens to EOS or others. I have one but I'm too scared to screw the pieces like that. They're very stiff and I'm afraid to break the lens

There also was M39 version of this lens on one of the Smena cameras, so you would only need M39 adapter ring to put it on the mirrorlesss camera. The lens do flare in an interesting way, but it is really sharp, cool toy lens :) it also has swirly bokeh, but due to 4f its not that easy to get it good :)

On the strength of this video, I went to ebay, bought a Smena for £8 ( €8 ;-) ) took the T43 off and set it into the helicoid of an Industar 26 that I did not like ...it's excellent!

@@Senjak026 Hi, I removed the inner parts of the I26 just leaving the helicoid/outer focus ring/M39 mount, tolerances were tight but I chose to epoxy resin the T-43 inside the I26 being careful not to let the glue contaminate any of the moving parts. Everything works perfectly and my LM/FX helicoid adapter reduces minimum focus distance to about 10" Here's a photo of it... www.flickr.com/photos/photator/50823145746/in/dateposted/

@@BaddaBigBoom thanks for a detailed reply. I found a copy (rather crappy one) of I26 which I'm going to buy just for this purpose, so I just wanted to know how much modification is needed. Sounds easy enough, and it will give me chanse to make make my first custom lense too 🙂 How happy are you with the photos? T43 seems to be rather sharp and praised by many even though raw specs are nothing to write home about. I mean, i understand for 5 bucks it's a great value and it is a piece of history ....so there's tthat

Got one of these lens for a XMas present after seeing your video last year, not disappointed. Compared it to the same composition of my modern Sony 18-135mm lens.. put it on Flickr and very difficult to tell the difference... Keep up the great channel..Colin

Got one today. I own a bunch of old Russian lenses and this might be the best of them. The sharpness is unmatched. I am using it with a standard m39 to micro 4/3 adapter, no problems. Best $30 I have spent in a while.

Had one somewere so i decided to trie it with a black magic pocket cinema camera.. works like a charm!! I used an mft to c mount converter and 3d printed the focus part witch are just 2 tubes sliding in each other so i can extend the lens distance or shorten it tov the sensor.

Bonjour Mathieu, ayant moi aussi un Olympus OM-D et un vieux Smena qui dort sur une étagère, je me pose la question... Il faudrait donc installer (visser ? ) l'objectif démonté sur un adaptateur plat m42-> M4/3 puis l'insérer dans un helicoid m42->m42 ? Pardon pour la question sans doute stupide, mais ça ne risque pas de shooter en macro ? Je dois dire que cette histoire d'helicoidal c'est tout nouveau pour moi ^^Merci beaucoup pour l'inspiration et pour le temps passé !

Hi Mathieu, new subscriber --love the channel. I followed exactly what you did, but my lens seems to be focusing short if I have the lens sticking that far out of the helicoid. if I remove it from the silver part and make it so the lens is flush with the helicoid, then fully closed, the helicoid is focused to infinity. what am I doing wrong?

Hey, did you do any further experiments with this? On my Pentax cameras this lens acts as (a pretty amazing) macro lens. This is true even on my mirrorless K-01 (flange distance is probably the same). I suppose a lot depends upon the camera mount system that you have and the flange distance that they use. My guess is that the helicoid can act as a macro tube.

both, but you need to find the right distance on the dslr because of the mirror, i can't help you on this one, cause i didn't teste the correct distance

Does it matter with MM of the helicoidal adapter is use, for example, 12 to 17 or 15 to 35mm ect.

I have a problem with this adaption. I got the lens, focusing system and adapter to use on my Nikon D7000. The problem is that I can only use the lens for macro work. I did some measurements and apparently I'd need some extension tubes. Are there other faster work-arounds? Thanks!

Best to adapt to Sony mirrorless (I have first A7. Cheap). It only works close on Nikon D7000.

@Mathieu Stern great video...! right away bought this tiny wonder... but i have a problem in disassembling as you do in your video (0:46 - 0:50 in your video). I removed all of the screws (maybe even too much) but i can't remove the black part where there is the mechanism that charges the shutter... is there something hidden to remove, to free the lens? thanks in advance if you can help me.

+Cristian Agostini to be honest i just went " hardcore" on that black part to remove it, not really gentle .. the black part is just being hold by metalic legs inside, so you have to give it some power

+Mathieu Stern thanks for your super quick reply..... will give it a try then...... :) i had wrongly thought that the black ring outside the rear lens was what held this black piece united to the lens itself..... so i had started to remove it... then i realized it was what held in place the triplet of the lens... :| ..... hope i have not misaligned it too much....

+Donald Binoya Interesting lens as a hack, but Nikon shooters can buy a Nikkor 50 1.8 AI on Ebay for the price of thls lens + adapter. Personally I don't see the point of a prime with an f4 max aperture when there are so many fast lenses available.

+Andrew Froening it will close very close, but with the M42 helicoid 17mm to 31mm it will work

+Mathieu Stern yes, I bought the one in your link and it looks exactly the same. At the farthest focal length it will only focus on objects 0.3 meters away.

Andrew Froening because you need the flat m42 to nex adaptor, and then screw the helicoid in this flat m42 to have a small focal distance

+Mathieu Stern I have a Panasonic GH4 so the mount is different, but it is flat. I also tried it with an M42 adapter to a Canon camera and I can't focus on anything not within 0.3 meters of the lens. I'm wondering if there's something else I need to do to be able to change the focal plane so I can focus on objects beyond that. I would love to get the cinematic shots you have shown for video.

Thank you Mathieu for the video and wonderful idea. I got my helicoid ring M42-M42 but unfortunately I found that it is smaller and I am not able to insert my T42 lens into the helicoid ring. I would to like to make sure with you if it is M42-M42 helicoid ring. Thank you once again for the idea, waiting eagerly to try it!

did you remove all the parts from back of the least ?? to just keep the metal part ?

as shown in the video i had to put some rubber inside the metal lens to fit inside the m42, the friction kept all together, because the metal lens is 2 mm larger than the m42. if you use some rubber and foam like in the video it should work. if you are into definitive solution you can also glue it to the m42

Hello Mathieu, Thanks a lot for your help and guidance. It worked well, the problem was that I didn't understand the procedure. Last night, I succeed in putting the lens into the helicoid. do you think that the lenght of focus does any difference, i got 15-26mm and i have difficulty in foucing distant object, it works more like macro for close focus. I saw in your blog that you have recommended 17-31mm helicoid. Thank you again for this great idea. :)

the closer you can put the lens to the sensor the more far you can see, like in the original plastic camera. so if your take the short helicoidal ring, your will focus on infinity more easy
