This Tiny Stream Almost Broke My PB! Well its that time of year and the end of the trout season is upon us. I decided to hit one of the small streams that I know holds trout in the hopes of breaking a personal best on the last day of the season usinf spinners, spoons and jerkbaits. I started off using my single hook lures, but after loosing several good trout and snapping off several baits in the trees it was a change of baits and a change in weather that saved the day!

I am no expert at all but from what i have seen agricultural run off has absolutely ruined my local river. A few years back a new farmer took over land upstream to where i fish and unlike the previous land owner he has beeen fertilising the field during the summer and after a few heavy rains the river is full algea and all the fish disappear they do come back around spring time but all the big trout are gone. I have also noticed there are also fewer salmon parr aswel i am not sure what to do as the enviroment agency probably cant do anything about as farm that produces food is aparently alot more important than a "little stream" acording to the council. Good to see your local river seems to have a nice healthy population of trout.

Same happened to the river I used to fish as a kid, had everything from grayling to perch, trout chub, walked it a few years ago and clogged with algae and low levels from extraction, such a shame for kids in the area not having the same childhood I enjoyed on the river 😢

That is sad. In my country all the natural waters belong under government and if you do something like that without permission it is very illegal and cops will knock on the door. Getting permission to water your plants from natural water streams is almost impossible and very expensive. Especially this summer was very dry and these tiny streams disappeared, there were several news about farmers who block them and pump out the water killing all the remaining enviroment.

Much better than my last session. First cast, lure straight into some brambles by the river. In trying to get it out, the bank collapsed and I went straight in. It was so deep I couldn't touch the bottom, I'm over 6 foot tall. Ruined phone, my vape exploded and scarred my leg, then I couldn't get out and was just clinging to the bank like a limpet for about 10 minutes. Pulled a muscle in my back and lost my lure too!

I've always had my best trout sessions when the waters's been a shitty colour. I have 3 rivers near by that are full of trout and grayling. It's the same for all 3. It probably triggers them into looking for terrestrials and worms that get knocked in after the rain.

I swapped out trebles for singles on my small cranks. Lost a few chub where they'd take a swipe at it and not get hooked. So swapped back and hook up improved. Crushed the barbs on the trebles obviously. I might try singles again but using smaller hooks, they always look too big when trying to match gape/weight to trebles.

I'm surprised how careless you are with allowing fish, including hefty ones, to thrash around in/on the surface, which is how so very many end up throwing the fly/hook/lure whatever you're using. If you drop your rod point to the side maintaining side pressure level with the surface (or even under it) you'll lose far less fish. HOWEVER - if you want flashy-splashy footage to impress inexpert YT watchers, sure keep them thrashing in the surface but if you really want it in your net leave out the surface stuff. This was a lesson I learnt nearly 60 years ago, just after losing the river-brownie of a lifetime that I still wonder just what it'd have weighed. As a youngster I was used to sub-lb fish but this was suddenly something entirely different. 6-7lbs maybe - from a long deep glide in the Water of Leith that flows through Edinburgh. An error I've (almost) never repeated.
