My hubby asked me last night what I wanted for Christmas. I told him I'd do some research and get back to him. This video was Perfect timing! I'd like to add this tool to my collection.
Bought one of these maybe 15 years ago, when they first came out. I've found it to be a go to sander for many projects. Great complement to a band saw or any curved projects. It has lasted fine. This is NOT a $1000 tool. At times you may wish for more power. But you're not in a hurry, right? The table is "ok" and the tilt does come in handy too. As a home craftsman, I recommend this tool
I absolutely LOVE the spindle/belt sander! I have mine on a cart/cabinet with wheels so that I can take it wherever it’s needed. One of my favorite tools in the shop!
Matt, I saw your mini-split A/C unit install, I live in AZ and because of you, my wife said I had to get one. I got the MrCool and it works great. Wanted to say Thanks for the videos and the tutorials, You are a Blessing to many of us "newbies".
I recently bought this exact sander, you are correct, it is so useful, why didn't I buy this sooner! Awesome review Matt, thanks for all the great content!
Matt. On my flip cart i use a piece of foam under my dect to hold the pieces when the deck is at a 45° & i built a 1x1 pine rorating guard to hold in my belt attactment works great
I been looking at getting one of these too. I notice in the specs the rigid has a 5 amp motor and the wen has 3.5 amps. I may pay that extra to go with the rigid and like u said they have a lifetime warranty.
That’s a awesome shirt! I love this channel, it’s my new favorite. Thank you for all the great videos and being bold about your faith. My likes and prayers are with you brother.
Love this sander now. At first I had a problem with the tightening knob/nut. The motor torque really tightens the hold down nut. I had to use pliers to remove it and wrecked the rubber knob. Luckily I have a metal lathe. I had some 1” hex steel rod turned part of it round and bought a left hand tap. Now I can put a wrench on it to remove it, easy Peazy.
Thank you. Just ordered through your link for pickup and use today. Been wanting one for a while and have need of it right now, so... You're awesome.👍👍👍👍😋
Can I ask what you have on the other side of the ‘flip’? Looking for inspiration. I have the usual suspects pretty much located elsewhere already. Thanks
I'd wanted one ever since I started woodworking about 8 years ago. Lucked up and got one at a yard sale 2 years ago for $100. Guy said he'd rarely used it, so much so that the sanding belt was still the original one lol. I love it, so nice. It's Ridgid, but it's white instead of orange 🤔
Thanks for the review. I bought a number of new power tools for the shop recently, however, I hadn't settler on a spindle dander though. I appreciate your attention to detail and real-world application info.
Good review, I have had mine for while. I like the forever warranty. Viewing youtube channels, most have this tool. Dependable. Wear a dust mask when using. I made a flip cart too, 13" planer on the flip side.
Triton and Bauer make one too - I'm sure they all come from the same factory. I got a Triton months ago and finally got around to setting it up and using this weekend. I'm a big fan now.
The dust collection works alot better with a dust collector vs a shop vac. Dust collectors don't have a ton of negative pressure but pull a much higher volume of air, which work better for this type of tool
Unfortunately, i have a spindle sander, a separate tabletop belt sander, and a large tabletop disc sander, so really can’t justify buying this tool, but it would look good sitting in my shop. Great review Matt! You always see these machines sitting in wood shops, but nobody is reviewing them.
I want one so much! Tired of using my palm sander and corded belt sander. Though about getting a cheaper spindle sander but I like the Ridgid tool line up, will be switching from my Ryobi tools as I replace them. Also think WEN has some nice bench top tools, got the 9" WEN Bandsaw but just haven used it much yet. I'm finishing up a new mobile base for my table saw, next build will be a work bench/Off-feed table!
I went through the same thing. In the end I'm glad I went with the Ridgid 2 in 1. I use the belt a lot more than I thought I would. While not cheap, it takes the place of more industrial versions that cost thousands more. And if you went with the Wen spindle sander but decided later to add the Porter Cable belt sander, you'd be spending $110 more for both and take up more valuable space in the shop. After owning and using the Ridgid, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
Love watching your videos at 04:00 hour before work just ordered a compressor / Brad nailer yesterday ( bostitch ) hopefully it will be ok, thanks for the video.
Great video. My friend just gave me one and i was wondering if i can use this to sand the faces of boards. I do some planter box builds with fence pickets and would like a quick way to knock off those fuzzies. I havent seen anyone use it like that so that makes me wonder if maybe its not safe or will not work well. Any thoughts or advice would be great. Love your videos and honest reviews of tools..
Great review. I wanted the Rigid, but 6 months ago, you couldn’t get this unit so I got a WEN. I think this Rigid sander out is version 3. Forgive me if you mentioned this, but The Rigid sander is the largest of the sanders out there. Did you mention using erasers to clean the sander belts and rollers?
Honest feedback: For a review I'd need to see things like how square is the table to the belt, can it be calibrated, and does it hold that calibration? Is the table secure or does it flex? Same with the spindle: Does it stay plum with normal pressure or does it deflect?
Great review. I'd go with the Wen however. The lifetime warranty would be useless to me since I live in another country. It would cost me more than the price of the machine to ship it back and forth for any repairs or replacements. Greetings from Guyana, South America.
Leave this tool in an area where you can get to it easy. If you can turn around or take a few steps and you're sanding. Man it's a game changer. Everything I've made over the last 2 years has touched this machine. Well worth it. If you get finer sand paper online this thing cleans up projects super smooth.
I wonder if the dust collection would be better with a proper high volume dust collector. Theres a lot of area the vacuum has to pull air from, and shopvacs just are not able to pull high volume.
I too like Ridgid power tools for their service warranty however our son-in-law gave me a Ridgid miter saw in July 2020 but I could not register it with Ridgid because it was a gift and I did not have the receipt. To register for the lifetime service warranty you must have register receipt.
The WEN version is opposite hand. The drive spindle is on the right on the WEN, on the left on the Ridgid. The dust collection is on the left side on the WEN, on the rear on the Ridgid. WEN's table does NOT have the miter slot.
Nice video! I've been looking at the Wen, but I'll take a look at the Ridgid as well. As far as the dust collection goes, I would be curious to see if you ever get a 2 stage dust collector system, how much the dust collection improves. God bless!
One thing I would have liked to see you mention is the miter guage slot... and that it is well over 3/4 inch wide which makes it a nice decoration but fairly useless unless there's some magical miter guage standard thats different than any of the 7 tools in my shop...
Just got the Ridgid Oscillating/Edge Belt Sander today! Glad I waited, will help me a lot. Matt, you use any other sanding sleeves/belts that didn't come with the sander? Thinking I should stock some 120 Grit and other Grits.
This is definitely on the list of things to get. 1. Planer 2. Jointer 3. Band saw 4. A sander of some type, probably something like in the video... 5. Then find a garage to rent out to make I to a wood working shop. Apartment living and being a "wood worker" ,well, let just say, not so easy.
Have you considered a jointer sled for use in your planer? You get the larger width capacity for ‘free’ unless you want to drop $$$$ on a freestanding unit. I just picked up a Ridgid 13.5” planer seriously considering dropping the jointer from my wishlist since I have a small shop
I bought those SATC Sanding Belts that you have linked but they keep slipping up or down even when I adjust with the knob. Is there a way to tighten the belts to prevent that I haven't dicovered?
The LSA for Ridgid is a bit of fools gold. Yeah it sounds awesome, but it's a bummer if there's major delays because they are constantly fixing things. I have the rigid table saw and really like it but the gears that move the blade up and down are make of plastic and is a known issue and got stripped out. The upshot it all was I was without a tablesaw for over 2 months as they had a shortage or parts to fix the issue. I'd rather have tools that don't break, than have an LSA. It's like Harbor Freight and their warranty. How much benefit do you get when you constantly have to drive to the store to get a new wrench, screwdriver, etc?
It looks like you are running out of room, for all your cool tools! I would like to see you make one of those flip top tables! So you can mount the sander, and something else!!!
Hi Matt, I added this to my tool collection this Christmas. I hadn’t used it until this week and tbh didn’t realize I was missing the 1/2” spindle. I am hoping ridgid will send me one. Can you tell me where to find the belts for the spindles?
ACTUALLY LOOKS REALLY WELL MADE AND SEEMS TO WORK VERY WELL. I HAVE A GRIZZLY SPINDLE SANDER WHICH I PERSONALLY LOVE BECAUSE IT HAS A BIG TABLE SORT OF LIKE THIS RIDGID WHICH IS A BIG PLUS!!! I ALSO LIKE THAT THIS ONE DOUBLES AS A BELT SANDER TO. BY THE WAY WHAT DOES THAT SIGN SAY ON YOUR GARAGE DOOR?? HAHA
Seen people post on youtube and Facebook saying that ridgid's lifetime service agreement isn't the greatest people say ridgid will try anything to deny claims
=Have had ridgid battery tools for many years. Have never had any trouble with the lifetime warranty. Batteries were replaced just by calling the number they give you. Hammer drill was taken to service dealer and repaired in several weeks. No problem getting it fixed.
I used the lifetime warranty for the first time recently. Have the hand vacuum and the propeller exploded. Called them up and they sent me a new one in a couple weeks. Easy to do.... Just took some time to get here. Not sure how much due to pandemic issue.
It’s good until you want or need to take advantage of the LSA. They want $30 just to take the machine, and in my case my local HD where I purchased it would not accept it back to repair it when the belt assembly broke. They sent me to another HD far away for repairs. No thanks to ridgid garbage again. When it breaks, it’s basically a paperweight.
