We're looking back at our video on Tractor Mods and looking at questions about our logging chain and tractor hooks. We'll also look at some options that may save your life...
On this channel, I make videos splitting and stacking firewood, filling and tending to my wood boiler, and testing out firewood equipment. Thanks for being here!

Thanks, Steve. If I may add my $.02 worth: when putting hooks on a tractor bucket for pulling logs, vehicles, etc, no matter what type of chain, cable, rope, you'll be using, mount the hooks *inside* the bucket, NOT on top. That way, if a chain or strap breaks, it goes into the bucket, not up over it and into your face. I learned this from a strip mining hvy equipment operator and have seen it work on our tractors. It's saved my bacon more than once.

Kinetic ropes and soft shackles have been in the offroad world for awhile, and it's cool to see them starting to make their way into the tractor world. I grew up farming and I'm honestly surprised I've never known someone killed by a chain. They are in every farm truck and how equipment stuck in fields get pulled out. known plenty of guys who have died from things like hydraulics failing, chemical/welding fires, vehicle accidents, etc, but not chains that I'm aware of. Anyway, I had the fortune of being trained by one of the top 4x4 driving and recovery experts in the world and it was super useful. Learned so much including lots of safety, how to calculate loads, etc. They need this same kind of stuff as just a basic tractor rigging and recovery course.

I agree. Since I made this video I saw a massive like 4" kinetic rope in the implement store for pulling combines out of the field and what not. I think the word is getting out!

Thanks for presenting an alternative to chains, and the specific circumstances where synthetics might be better. I agree, there’s no universal solution. I’ll still rely on my chains for the tasks I do, but will consider synthetics for the specific use cases you described. I appreciate that you laid out the info so that folks could make more informed choices.

I keep a moving blanket in my truck. I fold it and drape it over my tow strap or chain. Even better is to wet it. All the energy hits and stops at the blanket.

Wait till you have a Woods and Copeland tractor struck as we had happen in the 70s Once we had one so stuck that we use two 3/4 inch chain and 1 Massey and our other Woods and Copeland and an Autocar winch truck (80 ton winch on the back) to pull it out, when we went to get the 30 foot 3/4 chain that the other W&C was on we did not pick it up We rolled it up. We stretched the chain so much the links were tight We kept that chain (leaning against the shop) and used it a few more times. I do not think they make a chain that 2 people can carry that will not break before the old W&Cs breaks BTW we always dug the Autocar in as to get the best pull from it Then we would have to retrieve it and back fill with the backhoe Wet wheel farming.......Rice

The one issue that I have been made aware of with kinetic type tow ropes is that the problem is with what you attach it to - if the anchor point on your towing vehicle or the vehicle being towed fails, you can end up with a lump of metal on the end of a rope under tension that can then be catapulted at speed at the other vehicle.......... There was a case in Australia where the driver of a vehicle being towed was killed when then tow ball failed on the towing vehicle and was catapulted through his windscreen.
@upinsmokefirewood
@upinsmokefirewood Месяц назад
That makes sense. You would be wise to inspect your vehicle. Wouldn't help if you were pulling a stranger out. I bet it goes faster with a kinetic rope too. Certainly if you sent it thinking it was ok. Good point!

Steve, I have never used one of the kinetic ropes but I have multiple straps that are various percent stretch. You are absolutely correct at it amplifying the pulling force. I've pulled out a F350 with trailer and quads with a TRD off road Tacoma back in the day.

The strap on the trailer ball is a big no no . “most” people have a hitch rated at #5000. we had one bust and sent it though the radiator into the fan. Was lucky it didn’t go thru the windshield into the driver

I use both but i like the straps i use for my crane truck... You will jave a very hard time breaking that lol. Either one you use can snap and hurt someone so. Best practice you dont cover. It is a simple sandbag or simular put over or around the chain or strap. If or when it breaks it keeps it from doing damage just by being over the top of the chain or strap.

Hobbling along pretty good there at the end man 💪💪 I need to look into a decent set of recovery straps and soft shackles. I'm that shackles, wire cable or chain guy😂😂😂 that's all I ever used doing concrete construction rigging all the rebar we used to use. Good talk about useful stuff Steve!!!
@upinsmokefirewood
@upinsmokefirewood Месяц назад
They are very useful. My Dad owned a concrete company for 45 years and thats all we ever did was steel! I would say the mud and concrete dust wrecks most everything else but I'd rather buy a new one very year than take a chain in the knee!

You’re right : if you ain’t gettin stuck u ain’t tryin hard enough ! lol. My younger brother happened to get an old fire hose. That was the first kinetic style thing we’d used and we just tied a loop in each end. Then cut the metal hose end off. And it worked awesome and never failed us ! Definitely witnessed some horrific chain and cable snaps through the years ! Scary shit ! Take care Steve

No question the ropes and shackles are great retrieving methods and a chain does great in plenty of circumstances just use a dampener on the chain and strap. The guy stuck in the pond with that little tractor had a junk strap. If you knew what Ive pulled out with my 30,000k strap you'd freak. I dont leave home without it.
@upinsmokefirewood
@upinsmokefirewood 9 дней назад
Yeah I don't think you can over do it on the strap. The implement store by me sells some ropes to pull combines out that get stuck in the field. They have to be a 3" diameter!

10 lb sandbag draped over the chain, cable or rope will damp the snap-back and direct the whipping down. People have been killed by snapped lines as small as MASON's TWINE. And yes, EVERY hydraulically operated machine has the power to rip itself apart if the relief valve is not set correctly. And when a cylinder is not being operated, the lines and cylinder have no relief, so you can often apply forces that will bend the cylinder, burst hoses or break pins or even rip the frame apart.
@upinsmokefirewood
@upinsmokefirewood Месяц назад
We always use a jacket or a floor mat if you have one across a winch line.
@JohnSpaulding

Chains come in many different grades and diameters, as do steel cables. While he points out good alternatives you should really do your own research on what your buying and what the intended use is going to be. Everything has positives and negatives its up to you to make the correct choice.
@upinsmokefirewood

For sure. I wonder which stores more energy between a big chain or a small chain and if hardness makes a difference.

Seems like theres a chance for carnage no matter what you do but I feel like if you break a ball off you either had one that should have been repaired a while ago or you are asking more of your machine than it has to offer! Thanks for watching!

Chain can and will snap back given the right circumstances. Luckily, the ones I have seen break also fell to earth before hitting anything important. One way to minimize that damaging effect is to hang some sort of buffer (canvas tarp, heavy blanket) over the chain or cover it in a similar material. I have seen folks use old fire hose as a sheath over tow chains. The safest method by far is a properly sized kinetic energy rope.

If the guy with the tractor in the pond was an operator first he’d not put the tractor in the pond.. but secondly he could have simply used the loader to push himself back out of the pond.. his final failure was not using the proper recovery gear in his first attempt at recovery… he should’ve been embarrassed at his failures instead of posting them on the internet for clout chasing.. The only lesson to be learned from him is don’t be reckless near a pond’s edge… Which shouldn’t be a lesson you’d need to learn as it’s just common F’ing sense..
@upinsmokefirewood
@upinsmokefirewood Месяц назад
Did you watch his video or just talk smack here? He addresses many of these issues and points out quit clearly that he is not an operator but is committed to showing the good or the bad either one in an attempt to get better.
