This trail is amazing | Riding steep stuff on Hardtails
After enjoying riding my hardtail so much the other week, I fancied getting out on it again but limited for time, headed to 'somewhere' that I knew had an incredible trail - one of the best I rode in 2021.
Last time I was on my Orange Alpine, how would my hardtail cope with the steep, loose sections? Or more to the point, how would I cope with riding a hardtail down it?

Rattling down a trail on a hardtail is so much fun, riding blind can be a bit sketchier but when you get to ride the same trail a few times like you did here it’s great fun
@Stopadoodledoo

Totally with you mate, hardtails are just fantastic. Maybe not as fast as a full susser on many trails but no less fun because of it. I do love riding trails blind though as to an extent, you just have to deal with what crops up rather than over-think it 😃

Great vid mate….and the usual exemplary riding as always 👍 . ….as for my opinion on the debate between HT and Full Suss….my vote goes to Full Suss…..maybe because that’s all I’ve got 😂 ……btw , do all your Murch jersey’s come with that bulge at the front 😂😂 …..being a “lazy “ EBiker….I need one
@Stopadoodledoo
@Stopadoodledoo Год назад
Cheers mate. Hardtails are definitely limited compared to full sussers but on trails like this, there's really very little in it. They (hardtails) have to be ridden to appreciate them but it does happen. As for the bulge, I could lie and tell you that I had a hip pack under it but we all know that's a load of rubbish - I just love beer too much 😂

There's another debate you could kick off - local trails are trails you ride to from your house. As soon as you've put your bike in a car you are no longer riding 'local' 😉
@Stopadoodledoo
@Stopadoodledoo 2 года назад
@@markb868 very true but anyone who has watched any of my lockdown videos will have seen that there’s nothing really worth riding within pedalling distance of Chester. I guess I class it as local if less than 30 minutes drive from here, not local would be the Lakes, etc., although conversely I do think of them as ‘local’ as I grew up there and will always think of the Lakes as home. Confused? Me too 😂

Cracking video mate, you looked every bit as fast as you did on the full sus in my opinion, having rode this trail myself, i know how steep it actually is haha, very well ridden, thanks for the shout out mate, here's my like, and it's free 🤣👍

Sweet riding. On super steep trails a fullsuss spends a lot of the time with the rear suspension not that active as brakes are locked on so kind of acts like a Hardtail. I bought a Hardtail 2 months ago and 1st ride was an uplift day at Innerleithen,Golfie and Thornilee the next couple of days and in all honesty I kept up or quicker than the FullSuss boys on the super steep stuff . On the other hand I've got a heavy eeb and that is alot quicker than the Hardtail as it's so dam planted. I like your top and might have to get one .👍
@Stopadoodledoo
@Stopadoodledoo 2 года назад
Thanks mate, really chuffed with the top 👍 I think the big difference between hardtails and full sussers on trails like this are how rough they are; hardtails definitely get hooked up on roots, rocks, braking bumps and the like and you lose your speed but on smooth trails, there's probably not much in it.

To be honest, although there’s tons of places like this in Wales, there is in other places too (it’s just a case of sniffing them out). Not meaning to wind you up but there’s about ten locations within 30 minutes drive of where I live (that I know of) that are like this though 👍

Flintshire? Technically not giving away the location if it's just the county 😆

Not actually sure whether it’s Flintshire or Denbighshire if I’m honest, think it’s the latter though. I’m not great with the Welsh counties yet 🙂

Thanks mate. Funnily enough, I had intended the main focus of the video to be about riding hardtails on steep trails but the first run down (at least on this track) showed that there was sod all difference, so I prattled on about trail building instead 😂

So good isn't it, real shame that it's the only one up there (although there were signs of other things being cut in). You know what, I reckon that it wouldn't actually be that bad in the wet, with the possible exception of the bit in the thumbnail, which would be as scary as hell 😂

Love my hardtail and these are the type of trails it’s best for, I ride similar stuff near to me and prefer big brakes to big suspension. However, I need one bike that can do it all and feel the trusty hardy (as good as it is) is to unkind to my dodgy knees and causes to much fatigue on long rough runs in the hills and over the rougher trails I ride. The Orange 5 or Privateer 141 look like the perfect all rounder if you just need one bike. I’m envious of your 2 bike garage 😉
@Stopadoodledoo
@Stopadoodledoo 2 года назад
It really does depend on what you ride really and yeah, I am lucky to have both (hardtail came courtesy of Cycle To Work). I always say that I wouldn't want to ever be without a hardtail but if I could only have one bike, it would be a full suspension trail bike for sure as they're just so versatile 👍
