I must say your channel is definitely one of my favorites. My layout is mostly NS, Southern and N&W but I grew up watching SCL and ACL trains pass through our small town in eastern NC.
Gotta love a rigid frame monster of a locomotive. Makes me want to switch from HO to O. Great video. I'm also a victim from trainworld. Spent way too much there way too easily. 🤣 I'll need to get more videos of my MTH Yellowstones running around. TO THE TRAIN CAVE!!
Man-o-man I just LOVE the look of that mile-long main rod going "Uuuuuup-down, uuuuuup-down!" That 4-12-2 (Also called a Union Pacific type since UP was the only 'road that had them) has been a favorite of mine for years. Just a few things, the three-cylinder design wasn't so much for economy but for ease in balancing the massive machinery that made up a steam locomotive's driving system. Alco pushed the three-cylinder concept hard in the 1920's but few railroads bought into it. Balancing was easier but maintainance was a lot harder. That third cylinder was a pain to work on so many didn't get optimum maintainance. No matter, the 9000's were a great success on the UP and lasted into the 1950s. A fun video as usual Chris, thanks for posting!
Great video, Chris. I always enjoy dad’s train room too. Looking forward to seeing the changes to your room. Impressive 4-12-2 and the brief history was cool
The Triplex has a total of 24 driving wheels plus 4 and 6 more on the Erie (30) and VGN (32) engines, THAT'S a lot of wheels. The 9000 series were some of my most favorites from the Union Pacific. Glad 9000 is still around.
Once again, another fantastic video, Chris! Please give my best wishes to your father - what an outstanding layout! Always inspirational to see this amazing hobby run in the family. :)
I did a tour video last summer. Not much has changed so I will add a link to that video in the description of this one. I should have added it from the get-go!
Awesome engine. Happy lionel brought this back! Love the amount of detail your dad put into his layout very impressive and looks like a joy to film 1 feature to note on the locomotive is the gauge's inside the cab actually light up!
Hi Chris, Long time subscriber but, first time commenting. You are such a great ambassador for the hobby and unparalleled enthusiasm for model trains is Amazing! I love watching your videos and always look forward to the next one. I will be coming to York in October for the first time. I'm spending a few extra days in the area after the show. Could you comment on some must see train attractions and train stores to try and visit while I'm there? Hope to get a chance to say hello to you at the show. Keep up the terrific work your doing on you tube! All the best to you Chris
go to RailGiants train museum and you could blow 9000 whistle and other steam train and diesel engines in Pomona California if you lived there LA County fair.
Like father, like son! You and your dad share a wonderful hobby. I have the MTH Premier version of the Union Pacific 4-12-2. I am sure your dad's engine has a ton of special meaning being that it was gifted to him by his family. None of my retirement gifts were O scale and had that many wheels. In the 1920's all locomotive builders were pushing the 3 cylinder concept and several railroads ordered copies of them. Even the New York Central had some 3 cylinder Mohawks which were later simplified. UP may have wound up acquiring the most 3 cylinder locomotives. Looking forward to seeing your layout's redesigned upper level.
Hey rbp I am currently feeling a lot better from when I first got Covid and I wanted to say I remodeled my layout as well my go track is. Better than ever
A fun fact: not only to these 4-12-2s have 3 cylinders, but they also use Gresley conjugated valve gear. In other words, these are (mechanically speaking) the same as other famous steam engines Flying Scotsman and Mallard. I have one of these from MTH Ho. While that one is amazing in every way, I am jealous of the whistle steam lol.
These are absolutely beautiful locomotives... But my favorite locomotive of all time is the American type 440... Basically because it was one of the first
That is one good looking engine Chris it looks like your father has a really nice layout too yes I'd like to see what he has in his collection for engines 👍👍
I’m 12 and I’m starting O gauge in a couple months and I’m wondering if you have any engine suggestions that are cheap but realistic like the engines on your layout
Nice video, Chris, and a great choice of gift for your dad! Really impressive model. What great thing it would be to inaugurate your newly redesigned layout when your finished. Hope you dad's on board with that. He has really great collection! Obviously a man of great taste and careful selection. Being familiar with all those models as a young person has informed you in your hobby interests to make you a great advocate for the hobby. Thanks for sharing this important family occasion in this special way.
Hi Chris! I enjoyed the video, your dad’s layout is fantastic, glad you shared it. The 9000’s are pretty impressive, the prototype is out here in Pomona California, what a behemoth! Looking forward to seeing your progress on your layout.
Hey Chris - Nice video!! I have the same legacy loco by Lionel. I also have the MTH model which, though it does not have the Legacy system, it does have more detailing. For example, while all those angled pipes running up to the sand dome on our Legacy model are cast in, they are separately applied. The 3rd cylinder on Lionel's model is fixed while the MTH model's 3rd cylinder actually works as the locomotive is moving. The roof hatches on the MTH model also raise (though they can look a bit funny). The tender has the non-derailing chains from the trucks to the frame as well. Over all, MTH wins when it comes to detailing, Lionel wins with performance. - I kept both!!! Fortunately, they of of two different cab numbers. - LOL!!
Chris really nice video it's a fantastic idea to do videos on your father's layout father's layout many cool things On the layout as you're pointing out Many of them I'm sure there's more.... this engine is awesome to all the fantasy paint schemes look great that I've seen It looks like it's an extremely powerful puller love the sounds the whistle steam paint job and all the details in the cab it's a real winner the sounds of the whistles are all fantastic definitely not a bad idea to see if you can review some of the engines and train sets that your dad has I'm sure your familiar with them... And hopefully you get a chance to run trains there on a frequent basis .. These trains are so much fun to play with but they're such a great social medium with family and friends.. Could be the ultimate hobby !! Lol
Chris great video! And yes I would like to see more videos from your dads house. Showing some of his trains he has on the walls. What was your favorite when you were a kid that he had?
It is a combination of different products. Scenery is mainly Woodland Scenics, and Scenic Express. Trains are all Lionel, MTH and Atlas. Thanks for watching!
Chris. Did you know that they have a song about the UP 9000. It’s actually called 9000 and it’s by Nebraska 66. It’s a good song. Maybe you should do a tribute to the UP 9000 with the song playing for a video idea
I love your set out how you have your train set up I have a setup downstairs with my grandma's house I have all the big boy trains I run them now and then mine are MTH and I love him to death I just got my new train about a week ago and I was looking forward to it cuz 10 years ago I lost my Santa Fe train the chip died inside of it no one knew I had to fix it at the time and now I have a new diesel engine and I love it to death it's unit Pacific I have the diesel and I love it cuz it smokes I've been after one of those trains for so long and I finally got my diesel back but I keep on making good train videos I love them
