My skilled labor experience is in residential construction so I can't speak about the specifics of tree falling, but you're not only paying for the work being done but also the overhead costs for things like tools (both buying them and maintenance), the knowledge and skill you've gained and honed, and the assurance that the job will be done properly, safely, and in a reasonable timeframe. There's tons of things you don't see and won't think about unless someone points it out to you. If I'd been doing finish work with hardwood that day, I would spend a little under an hour at night honing my hand plane, chisels, and carving knife because if they didn't have perfect cutting edges, I would be wasting my time and effort the next day for less good results with tools that had slightly imperfect edges.

Jake, I've seen many, many from doctors to lawyers to judges to tree company owners addicted to one thing or another. Once they get to that point toward they need it every day. It doesn't matter at that point, that's what they need a lot of them. Are scared to get clean that worried about being sick. Yes, there is medication out there can help some people do want the help a lot of them don't and they lose everything and it's so sad. I was one of those people. I was addicted to pain killers bad. I did get clean and I've been clean now for 17 years by the grace of God. It was a rough road but like I said, it's been 17 years. I've been sober and it's amazing. It was probably one of the hardest things I ever did was to get clean but it's well Worth it God bless everybody.

If God cared about you he'd never have let you get addicted in the first place. If you're saying by the grace of God you were able to get clean, he must have had some part to play in getting addicted. Another reason why God doesn't exist

Jacob, as a guy who was also struggling with alcohol problems, and is currently 3,5 months sober, I honestly like to hear you talking about it. It gives a different perspective, and people learn from other people. Its like buckin billy ray’s video on alcohol. Make one video, and help a shit tone of people. I guarantee you 100% if you make a video on your substance “problems” in the past, you will help people. You might not like this, but people look up to you. Me included. If you find someone who you idolise, has had the same problems as you, it genuinely makes life a bit easier, realising its not just you. In some cases it gets rid if of the feeling of being a failure, knowing there are other suffering too. God bless buddy🙏💝

I hired a local tree crew last spring, the owner was my age late 50’s and his 2 man crew was 1 og early 60’s and a younger early 30’s. The OG smoked a cig before starting and both 2 man were climbing my 12 firs that average 120’ tall. Cleaning up half broken branches and dead limbs. The 60’s dude climbed 7 trees and was proud he out worked the younger guy. I was stunned at his speed and attention to detail. I’m glad I paid them the money and it took me several weekends to process the limbs. I just had them do the trimming. I took care of all cleanup. Well worth the money spent. You boys earn your pay for that really high work. I’m amazed at the strength of the 4” diameter top with you standing on it. I know you are close in so that you aren’t trying to make it sway. I don’t mind heights as long as I”m confident of what I’m standing on. That very top would have me freaking out. Larger Titanium nuts you carry up with you. 😂

Crazy, I know prices are higher in the US, but I didn't know it would be that much of a difference. I have my own tree service in Germany and the customers would not be willing to pay more than 4.5k total for this job. The total price for a 60 foot spruce tree would be about 1.3K at my company. And that's a lot for most customers. About 50% of my offers get rejected because someone else does it cheaper. The craziest thing was an estimate of mine for 1.4k and another company did it for €850. It was a 54-foot-tall cedar tree with huge branches that hung over both the house and the neighbor's shed. Customer gave me the job because I was more professional during the estimation process. But that customer was an exception, others don't care about customer service and professionalsim here. You guys know what all the equipments costs, dumping, diesel, insurance. I still pay 1,5k for a chainsaw (around 750 for a top-handle, 500i is at 2k) and almost 40k for a chipper (depending on the model) Not even including all the climbing gear. It is very hard to keep the company alive. Hard work and "risking your life" in the tree is not appreciated in Germany. Oftentimes, I only make 200€ net profit for a whole day of work, not including maintenance of equipment and my time to sharpen the chainsaws etc. But I have no choice, either I try to keep up with the prices or I have to close the company.

Jake, as someone who used to bid on big Air conditioning jobs I speak from experience when I say that you are doing yourself proud by explaining your bidding practices. I once bid on a huge school district air conditioning maintenance job contract which was over 300K and forgot to add in the cost of inflation aver the 3 year period that the contract was for and was fortunate that my competitor who won the contract underbid me as he had made some error even bigger than mine. I realized my error after the bid was in and was hugely relieved when the other guy won the bid. I would not have made much profit if he had not won the contract. There are always other people bidding, so you have to be honest. Also your job is super dangerous so you deserve to be profitable.

Enjoyed the video. Nice seeing things come together for you. You're so right on the cheap low rate so called tree services all around. You're doing it right by charging a fair rate and doing quality work. Repeat customers are important to a business. What people will deal with to save a buck.....sometimes just getting totally "ripped off". I too love the climbing aspect of tree work. I just love climbing a tree, figuring it out and taking it down. Continued success to you and Sappy.

It is refreshing to hear a contractor talk about pricing. Too many are out to gouge anyone and everyone in any business. This goes all throughout the contractor world. I am retired and live comfortably but not high on the hog. I do odd jobs for people in need and tell them why and offer my rock bottom price. Many, many are so appreciative. Thank you for your honesty and morality. We need more of that in today's world.

couple thoughts - first of I love your honest to the gut style. Saw couple things here that one day may catch up..not critical, you are your own man…the brave man running the receiving end of zip line…maybe put in a porta or a breake or check line (not sure if you have seen this done, not the porta but the break-line). Eventually his “number” will come up and he will get hit by one of those branch torpedoes… also west coast style cutting with just lanyard - no problem for me at all - how ever with the ported super fast saws, high rev - even a steel cable is no match…at one point I saw a cut - above your lanyard, close, down towards lanyard…just got worried there - we all have a tired moment, are stressed, dehydrated…just be super careful…we/I like ya…really!
