When I heard about the Pelagos in 39, I thought I was dreaming. This isn't just some cult hit, this is a reincarnation of the revered Tudor Snowflake. So this isn't just a normal review, this is a highly critical analysis of whether Tudor was able to thread the needle and make lightning strike twice.

Your video title is spot on. I was called by my AD for this watch and I was totally underwhelmed in person. The sunburst bezel felt out of place, the sunburst dial seemed inorganic with the ethos of Tudor divers of the past, and the watch just ended up looking like the Seiko SPB143 to me for some reason. I think if they had done a faithful refresh of the Tudor Sub, I would have been satisfied.

I really like this watch. I was actually anticipating these upgrades like a more toothy bezel, the larger crown, rivetless bracelet and the T-fit clasp on the next gen BB58. But on a new 39mm Pelagos, I might have to pick one up sooner than later. I picked up the BB Pro recently and I think this would be a great addition to my one watch collection. 🤔

Great recap of the pros and cons. Earned my subscription. Obviously - just looking at their marketing - you’re not their target for this watch. They’re positioning it as a versatile dress/sports watch. Just saw the exhibition piece at my AD yesterday and was blown away; can’t wait to pick it up next month. Then I’ll have the tricky job of working out the perfect rotation with the BB Pro.

Very much agree with you on the comments and suggestions to Tudor. I had an LHD and loved it but due to the size of my wrist, I realized I loved the watch but don't love it on my wrist thus sold it. If Tudor does the same LHD without date and shrinks it to 39mm and thinner, it will be perfect to me. Another well-done review man!

I'm kinda sick of people talking like they know what the "Pelagos" is supposed to be. I agree with you 100%. I purchased the fxd in December so the lack of helium valve and 200m water resistance obviously didn’t bother me there. I love the lhd Pelagos. This one just feels a little off with the sunburst dial and bezel. A matte 40mm black or blue with 300mm would have been much more exciting to me. The Pelagos needs to be the purposeful “toolwatch” for Tudor. This will sell like hotcakes either way though.

Saw this watch in person at an AD just this morning. The sunburst dial and bezel are not for me, wish Tudor kept the flat colour/texture of the larger variant. Hi, thanks for the great video. If I could add some points to your wishlist for a revised P39, it would read as follows: 1. Add a date function just as the P42 has 2. Consider a saphire caseback like the North Flag had 3. Add a quick strap-/bracelet change option as one kind find with multiple other brands to switch between the titanium bracelet and i.e. the provided rubber strap Happy to pay a couple of bucks extra for what I would then consider to be the perfect watch!

I agree 100 percent with your recommendations for a future 39 Pelagos: same case, same bracelet, blue, and matte. I've seen the LD 42" at an AD and really like it -- but I worry that a short period of time it will feel just a bit too big (in the height dimension).

A very smart move by Tudor, making a more compact, thinner version of the original Pelagos that will appeal to a wider audience. Featuring a more handsome dial & 3D lume plots, the in-house COSC movement similar to the BB58, titanium bracelet with the T-Fit clasp (instead of that spring-style eye-sore) and a complimentary rubber strap is a big plus. My only reservation until I get hands on is the sunburst dial and bezel aesthetic.

I want one... Just in blue. It'll come. Will see... I feel traditionally, the blue color ones that Tudor makes tend to be more subdued. I'm just thinking of the BB58, the blue is more subdued to the black gilt.. even the ss metal used was subtlely different. Who knows? Maybe when a 39 Pelagos in blue comes, it may be a nice subdued blue, lose the red accent on the dial for a more monotone look, and maybe it may return to a flat/matte finish?

As far as it being too shiny, I haven't seen it in person, but other reviewers have noted that it's not as shiny as they thought it would be. A very interesting view Max. I also have the LHD and love it for all the reasons that you mention. I have also seen the Pelagos 39 in the flesh and I must agree that the sunburst dial is very subtle but is a little more pronounced on the dive bezel, it also seems to be a lot lighter than my LHD. Do I want one? Yes, definitely. Why? Well it's different enough from the LHD to make it its own watch, also it's different enough from the BB58 looking like a watch that takes its cue from modern times like the flat sapphire crystal as opposed to the box type. I have to agree that a matt dial and bezel would be great but for me it might cross a tad too close to the LHD. Hopefully I'll get the call at some point. Some may rightly state that it dilutes the tool nature of the Pelagos family a little but I can live with that.

Ive always thought of the pelogos as a tool watch so for me it has to have a date. I would love a Matt black version with date or maybe a dark Matt blue version with date. It’s seem like a very strange watch to have in the range as It must be taking lots sales from the bb58 or maybe they are just really confident that the next 58 will get the attention back.

Bit harsh imho. I'm the same. I expected perfection and was surprised by the shinyness. But... I say... Give it few months and let's see if we get warmed up to it.

Didn’t realize the sun burst texture on the dial. Good call. I was thinking to sell my 14060M for the Pelagius 39 as well as a Rolex 369 explorer.

I liked it when I tried it on but I found it a bit small for me. Noticed quite a difference having worn a 42 mm to the store that day. I’m not sure yet but it’s a great watch. Your reasons for not liking it are not mine and to be fair to Tudor if my wrist was a little bit smaller it wouldn’t be an issue at all. I really like the bracelet and how flat the crystal is. The dial and bezel are great in my opinion. I’m probably going to get an Omega Planet Ocean or Aqua Terra next. They tick more of the boxes I need. I’ve been waiting for something decent from Tudor and it’s nearly perfect.

Very subdued. I owed a P42 and now the P39 and I prefer the P39. Its a mash of the P42 and the Rolex sub. Love It!

Nice review. Beyond the blue color, matte bezel and dial I’d add a date function. At 39mm would be perfect. That’s why I love my blue Pelagos so much, but I’d prefer it at 39-40mm to be the perfect daily. Still on my rotation nevertheless.

I'm not sure why a smaller Pelagos was needed. They advertise it on women which makes sense but I personally can't understand the fascination with small men's watches. That said it's good looking and the dial finish is great.

I would have rather seen a 36mm (for women) and a 40mm with date, leave the 39 to the Pro and BB58 lines.

Personal I can’t understand the fascination with calling a 39mm diameter watch, 12mm thick, with a 47mm LtL “small” 🤷🏻

While I haven't made the decision to buy or skip yet (need to see it in the metal), I totally feel you. I would have loved a 39 LHD, basically (with roulette date). Now I'd also be curious to see a blue version, but I'm concerned Tudor may say there is already one...the FXD. Wait&See !

I think this is the best modern diver I’ve ever come across. I found the matte boring and find the brushed satin to be the perfect compromise between the high polish sub and the totally matte Pelagos 42. My one and only diver going forward.

I’ve yet to see the 39 in person however mine is coming…soon I hope. I own the blue Pelagos and previously owned the LHD. It’s the perfect submariner in titanium. I understand the bezel & dial are slightly sunburst but provided it’s not too overt, it’s all good.

I owned the P42 and just got the P39. The dial and the bezel very subdued and I love that it turns ghost grey in some lighting and angles. This is the Tudor Sub we have been waiting for. BTW the red pelagos font adds to that feel of the Tudor Sub. Its a total winner.

I perfectly agree to you. As an owner Pelagos LHD, BB58 black dial and blue dial, BB Pro, BB Chrono, and BB GMT, new Pelagos 39 is perfect size but has lost tool watch looks by adding sunburst dial and shiny bezel. The red "Pelagos" lettering is beauty but LHD also has it. I also don't understand why Tudor removed date upon downsizing 42mm to 39mm, as they can do it on BB Pro. Important factor of tool watch is robustness and not case thickness. Seems like Pelagos 39 is selling well as other Tudor new releases in past few years, which I bought six of them, but for me Pelagos 39 is incomplete to fill in the gap between Pelagos and BB58.

Great video! Ya I share your thoughts on the shiny factor! When I compare this to the bb58 it’s a no brained to go blue bb58! If they had this in all Matte I’d be all over it. Waiting on the square marker bb58 👀 that would be a cult classic.

Nice review! Fair point but I think all mechanical divers are “lifestyle divers” in this day and age. The most famous diver of all is also mostly a statement piece. So, adding a less toolish and a little prettier Pelagos to the lineup is not a bad thing IMO. Makes it more practical for daily wear for 95% of Tudor’s audience.

I have the 39mm and the LHD and I share these sentiments. I’m keeping both and love both but Tudor barely missed out on what could have been the perfect Tudor. Go back to matte finish on the dial and bezel and please bring back the cream markers and hands like the LHD. I spoke with the President of Tudor USA while he was in Austin 1 month before the 39mm was released and told him what the perfect Tudor watch would be to me. They almost got it exactly as is described it, but missed on the matte dial/hands and cream patina, so close! Great job Tudor, keep them coming you are actually listening to us. I’ve bought 8 new Tudor watches in only 19 months from my AD in Austin and I’m a very loyal fan and customer.

I got to try one on over the last weekend. It's light and dainty. Yes, it is dainty. It's feels small, on wrist it looks small. I think the weight was playing a Jedi mind trick on me, I was instantly disappointed, I thought this was the watch, unfortunately not for me. On the positive side I found it's very nice to see in person.

I feel like Tudor is the watch enthusiast face of Rolex, but at the end of the day we forget the average customer who wanders in the AD isn't us. This new watch is the more contemporary option, the other side of the coin to the retro BB58. Even tho it shares the Pelagos name and DNA it might as well have a completely different name. I think very few people who were happy with the original or the FXD will be happy with the 39.
