So a lot of people have been curious about the mop brushes, and I figured I should highlight them! They're Art Secret squirrel brushes and the large one I used is a size 6. They soak up water well, and aside from a few hairs falling out when they're still new, they're pretty durable. You can purchase them at their own site or at Aliexpress. You might find slightly cheaper variants of them at other stores on Aliexpress if you dig around. Just search "squirrel mop brush" in the search bar, look for the black ones with orange banding, and see what the reviews say. I've used both - Art Secret branded ones and others - and the quality is similar. Besides that, you can find all the materials I used listed in the description. Much love! - Kathy Aliexpress store: m.aliexpress.com/store/1266879?trace=store2mobilestoreNew Art Secret site store: artsecretshop.com/products/handmade-squirrels-brush?variant=17048932417625

Just in case you'd not had the luxury of hearing it aloud before (and why should you, tbf!) the 'e' in Schmincke is voiced. As if it's Schminck *_-ah._* And the 'bein' in Holbein, rhymes with sign - I know, German is weird, I am very sorry! 🇩🇪 Pronunciation to one side, your layering and texture building is breath-taking, and your brushwork masterly. The portrait reminds me very much of Liv Tyler, and your colour pairings in all three studies are a delight, thank-you! 🙏🏼

Thank you young lady. This is by far the most interesting use of two colors to make three paintings in detail. Paynes Grey is typically a mixture of Ultra Marine blue and Burnt Sienna. I would think the manufacturer probably uses their own mixtures of Burnt Sienna and Ultra Marine Blue to make their version of Paynes Grey. Enough said on my part. I just needed to make a point I guess. I have been painting with watercolors since the early 1990’s and you’ve done a remarkable job with this video. Do some more of these videos and watch your talent grow with many new subscribers as well. I have not purchased a tube of Paynes Grey, I make my own on the pallet with Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue.

Is Payne's Grey typically made of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna? I avoid it because it may include a bone/ivory black.
@toobad41
@toobad41 Год назад
Payne's grey is a dark blue-grey colour used in painting. Originally a mixture of iron blue (Prussian blue), yellow ochre and crimson lake, Payne's grey now is often a mixture of blue (ultramarine, phthalocyanine, or indigo) and black, or of ultramarine and burnt sienna. I do not use black in any of my tube paints.

Hi! One thing I tried to help me understand pigmentation in individual paints was swatching them in a spectrum of one pan to another that was complementary. So maybe try Swatches going from pure Payne's grey to pure burnt Sienna with as many transitions as you can to get a feel of your paints! Hope that helps you, art is a gift!

You absolutely cracked me up with the ascribing to wear foliage comment. I love your style and color mix here, can't wait to get out these paints and play!. This is the first video of yours that I've seen, but I am hooked and subscribed! PS. Years ago for 4-H I organized the kids to perform a play where they could all take part, called The Flower-Town Ball. Yes, all the kids were bedecked in leaves & flowers. Growing out of their shoes, ears, hair & any other gap, crease or crevice we could fill. It was great fun and as soon as I started laughing about ascribing to wear foliage I could see them kids, my 6 & 30 friends, all trailing vines and grass across the stage. Thanks for a great afternoon,

Hello Kathy. Thank you so much for presenting this. This colour combination really caught me once I saw your vid. I am very much into autumn etc. as you described so eloquently. My home is done in these colours (roughly!) and they are colours that really make my heart skip a beat. I will try this combination and if I ever get a kudo on one of my paintings, I will tell people I got this from Kathy S. Keep up the amazing work. And your own humility aside, all 3 of your paintings in this vid were spot on. Even the bird, that you criticized. Be kind to yourself. Keep on wetting pages! Best, John.

Holbein has such a different character to it, while other colors give the character of nature, earth and the „known“ . but just slight green to it and it gives the feeling of „unknown“ something between man and world, as you perfectly described „old buildings, rusted locks etc. seeing such visual and stark differences in colors I wish i had the space and money to own every Brands and every color, but till then thanks to amazing artists 😊like you who can show us the beauty of watercolor.

I would love you to comment as to the use of sennelier inks to add in to the watercolor, as in my experience I find a certain depth achieved bringing richness beyond anything that is found in using straight watercolors. As well iridescent mediums , silver, gold ink, etc. may be incorporated in multiple ways that bring certain special effects. I would as well like to complement you as to the expertise of your painting skills . Yes as well I am going to try some Daniel Smith burnt sienna. Mixing Payne’s gray is something long ago that is relatively easy that I enjoy doing on my own. Also lastly artists should remember that in using grays or blue grays in a painting allows the eyes to “rest”, and helps bring balance to a composition. In art an exemption their exists to every rule imaginable but one. And that is in placing the focus of the composition, directly in the center of paper/canvas,whatever. Their seems to me no way around this rule, however which way you look at it .❤ Nice video!!!

Really excites me, how much you can do with just two colours. Schmincke btw has another colour called Transparent Sienna wich is made out only of PR101. I think, this colour is much closer to W&N Burnt Sienna.
