I'm pretty sure the real reason the set up was so bad on that first level wasn't because you'd end up on the left side at the top, but because you hit him twice. Cause then he enters the final phase shooting three onion rings, and the top one would perfectly sync with the rising platforms and get in the way.

I remember these levels, was lurking & watching during the live stream, that first level was a bitch.
