I think Angel Hare might fit that category. Mind you, it does have some unsettling elements, but it's less of a horror story and more of a mystery, and it does get wholesome at certain points.
Only some of em are evil most are just mischievous and actually very polite. They say u can trick one into spilling the water from its head by bowing to it and it will bow back
The only thing that tipped me off (other than the credits) that this wasn't VHS was that some of the background characters in the school were animated _too well_ lol. Fantastic work!
Not the cd player with the ear buds? Ear buds as we know them were a 2001 invention and usually came bundled with ipods. You would rarely see someone with a cd player AND ear buds until later into the ipods lifespan once generics were more commonplace. Its a good animation btw I'm just old and know from having lived it.
in that closeup of her face in the beginning there's also just a bit too much momentum in her hair when she's looking around, it's got a rubbery bounciness to it that you more often see in western flash animation than in anime, especially for such a minimal action
Love the way you replicated that 90's anime asthetic. It looks extremely accurate to anime from that era, especially with the cell-shaded animation and the watercolor backgrounds.
damn i wholeheartedly believed that this was from an old vhs and only in the credits did i realise this was your work. this is amazing! i thought this would have been some sort of educational/promotional bump from Japan in the 90s
@@kyronmckinney You could argue they've always been in the water safety business, it's just in a friendlier way now. We have weird brains, and, "Don't go down to the water alone, the [monster] will get you," has, for some reason, always been an easier sell than "Don't go down to the water alone, you'll fall in and drown."
this video got me out of a very sad slump, thank you for "finding" this "tape"!! it's so well made, i can tell the creator put a lot of love and time into it.
I love how I was completely immersed in this idea of a found old anime short film, then I got completely blindsided seeing the logo for my previous university at the end.
Really cute story. I live it. Reminds me of some old japanese folklore story where humans and yokais formed a friendship. The ghost in your attic has really good taste in anime. Just becareful though since it may be mad since you stole its anime.
this is really well crafted! i enjoy the watercolor backgrounds, the subtle but fluid movements, and the sound design that is just spot on for this short film. nothing seems amateur-ish, the story is very clearly told and not too lengthy! great work!
Let's see... shades of Lu Over the Wall (the kappa), Ocean Waves (protagonist character design), and His And Her Circumstances (color palette). That's what I'm getting here. I make a point to study animation.
you should sell actual vhs tapes of this so people can randomly disperse them in people's attics while they're on vacation or something. (also great work on this, the animation is breathtaking and I love the color work!)
I knew it couldn't be VHS before reading the comments but I do like the animation a lot. There is no time base error and no chroma noise at all in this. Also the image quality is too good. I used VHS a lot from 1986 through the mid 90s and also used SVHS which had better luminance resolution but the same cruddy chrominance limitation as VHS.
past may have been quite horrible, but often times you get this feeling of needing to go back as if there had been specks in the past like gold shining under the water in the sunshine. This animation is giving me that feeling, saw this video and instantly subscribed. felt like this is just my thing. Just Perfect!
Aw, the dead giveaway on the age of this animation is the headphones, lol. But seriously though - this was so pleasant and sweet to watch! So glad this was in my recommended. 🥰
I often wish that this kind of VHS-blurriness, water-colour background aesthetics would come back to anime - it just has its very own, cozy charm, modern shows look great but I much prefer this soft style over thin outlines and sharp HD look. This was an amazingly beautiful short film. 😊💕
"A depression on its head, called its "dish" (sara), retains water, and if this is damaged or its liquid is lost (either through spilling or drying up), the kappa is severely weakened." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_(folklore)
this made my heart feel so warm and fuzzy after a crappy day :,DDD thanks for cheering me up with your wonderful animation. the storytelling and stylistic choices are truly marvelous. keep up the good work!!!
The boy's hand sign at the beginning can sometimes mean sexual intercourse in Japan, so I don't think you'll see it in the anime like this. But nice work!
You and Tapacat did such a good job with this. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was some sharing of cucumber. I love how the Kappa seems content to have brought these two girls together.
A story about coexistence. Very heartwarming, and far from the darker stereotype of the kappa. The lack of dialogue brings out the characters' facial expressions & body language. Looks like something Studio Ghibli would produce. 🙏🏻👌🏻🥰
definitely not VHS, but the younger generation never quite gets it right. Many will freeze frame or add digital artifacts that only can happen from a digital source. VHS is lower resolution than 480i and it often plagues with ghosting or color artifacts and damaged tapes can show tracking issues. Interesting animation though, and I hate to sound pedantic but maybe I am a bit pedantic
Given the history of kappas I was just waiting for something really horrific to happen, so glad that's not the case as this really helped me feel a bit better! 💙
Seems like you’ve been posting for quite a while. Glad to see one of your videos getting this much attention. You definitely showed off a really good slice of life short. The warm colors and sparse detail really helped establish the “melancholic autumn” atmosphere. The story was simplistic but charming. I always appreciate dialogue-less skits, it demands attention to subtlety and nuance in movement and expression, which you clearly possess. Not to mention the VHS effect did legitimately make me feel like I was discovering something. Great Work!
You’ve upped the 90’s aesthetic to max in this version haha. I’ve enjoyed watching both this and the original now. What a delightful little film, and what a good little kappa.
Even though this obviously isn’t from a real VHS, it still warmed my heart that it has such a similar esthetic to a VHS tape playing, like the tape playing at the beginning and blurry frames. I appreciate attention to details like that, makes me feel nostalgic.
I was waiting for this to turn into something absolutely horrifying when i saw "VHS in Attic" but this was adorable. No words but the animation said it all, really well done
I was going to inquire as to how you cleaned up the VHS tape to digital quality, but then I realized that it was digital in the first place. It's very well done.
This mini film in a strange way summed up my last 2 years of school. I couldn't make friends when I tried, so I decided to isolate myself, but my current best friend saw me, and decided to start socializing with me. With your help I was able to loosen up more and began to have the courage to make friends
The behind message its amazing, to people like me, being social gives me complete anxiety, but at the same time that loneliness that I get its overwhelming. One time on school a kid approached to me and after that, I've finally started to have friendships. That kappa might be the kid that gives you that push that you need to learn to make social interactions, and more people should do the same.
Beautiful animation, the colors and story feel really comfy, like coming back home after a long day, and the movements are flawless, I bet it took a long time to make. Wonderful work indeed 🤍
Thought this was going to end really creepy just due to the "found videotape" thing but it just ended up really sweet and heartwarming. I've never been so happy to misunderstand something
