I'm oldschool and don't care about what people think. I do enjoy 90s old steel classic mtbs that I modernize. Just give me a Rocky Mountain Blizzard, Kona Explosif, Jamis Dragon, Voodoo Bizango, Diamondback Apex SE, Scott Pro Racing, Bianchi Grizzly and I'm good. What a minute I have all of those but want more of the old classics
Now that's a seriously good looking build-up! In Europe we call them Café Racer and ride them in summer to the crowded Gelateria & Ice Café. Means... Hey bro, check out the bling! 😆😅
My son mildly modded my 1988 Rockhopper. He loves it. Yup, it generally doesn’t do “big air” and steel is real can beat you up after a long day on rough terrain.
I did a very similar build with a 1993 Cannondale frame. It’s 1x10 with Shimano Zee (which was cheap and available) and Deore V brakes. It’s really fun to ride and a bit faster than I expected.
I love this oldschool bikes. I started biking in Austria with a Kästle MTB . Now i built a 1991 Stumpjumper and enjoy all rides with this Bike. You have to work harder to ride trails but it works .
Hi I’m 5”8 and have and leg inseam of 31 inches , I’m trying to a buy a rock hopper but don’t know what size frame I would need does anyone know. Thanks
👍🏼 I just did this Loop last week on my retro 90’s (1989 to be exact) Bridgestone and it is a blast. Really don’t know why so many people ride this loop with full suspension and e-assist🤷🏻♂️
Everything flexes on this bike 😂. The brakes were $15 for the set! Yea a brake bridge might help, but most of the squish is coming from cheap housing I think. For gearing, I’m a sucker for a mullet. I’m not going to tour on this or anything crazy
You did a good job of specing out your hardrock. I love my 84(?) hardrock single speed. A mountain bike it is not.....but pretty da--n good on just about everything else except gnarly single track.
Losing the chamois is no loss. it'll cut down on saddle sores & you never feel like you walk out in public in your underwear. Back in the day chamois was actual chamois cloth for assorbing sweat. Today's are just padding, not all that different from the padded seat covers at your local big box.
I still have a swell black one, 20 inch frame 1 inch steerer. given to me from a long passed friend. I had it full XT at one time. Chain ig70 i think or 71 and Xt rear der from 95 is still on the frame in the basement.
I have 3 90s mtbs and I usually wear some stretchy with slight baggy shorts then a baggy t shirt (prefer baggy over tight) and cooler days a regatta thin fleece, very comfortable and over the years of wearing these type of shorts and a saddle that fits me perfect my butt doesn't get any pain
Nice! I just built a single speed too 90s mtb too... but yeah I keep reaching for my geared bikes😅. I like the simplicity and clean look of it, but it's so hilly around Fullerton/ La Habra area.
Wow, that bike end up super nice; rear derailleur setup is spot on, only needing a 36t narrow wide chainring; I love everything else. For me it's only second to Ritchey Ascent 2021 with similar setup but of course with hydraulic disc brakes.
I really like them for they’re intended purpose - cruising around and some light trails. They hold up fine. Spec wise, I did t even take weights or measurements when I got them - I just wasn’t concerned with it since they went on a vintage build.
when i get oldschool bikes, i just tune them. i dont change any part unless they are broken. i use my bikes for short commutes and exercising. i dont care much about the looks
I’m just starting to “restore” old bikes for resale. I agree with you about not changing much unless it’s broke. Working on these bikes keeps me busy and puts a little coin in my pocket.
This bike looks very much like my red 86 Rockhopper which also still rips. I had it repainted and after it was stripped there were comments about the quality of the welds and braising. With the right tires the bike floats over bumps like a suspension. Those bikes have interesting geometry, my chainstay is 465.
