For anyone that needs to hear it: the title says the only v8 Volvo put in a car, not the only car Volvo put a v8 in. Also, they mention the xc90 in the video. No clickbait. Just poor reading comprehension.
As pointed out by someone else, it was in a concept car and doesn’t really count if it didn’t go into production. (IMO) It WAS used in trucks from 1956-1966, but still doesn’t invalidate the title of the only v8 put in a CAR.
@@djkasdjkasdjdjdj even then, the FWD Volvos hardly understeer, and they are suprisingly snappy and fun! If you havent driven one, you definitely should.
@@djkasdjkasdjdjdj even then, im on (for the most part) original suspension and my s60 is nearing 17 years old. They arent AS good for ruggedness, but FWD cars are safer in terms of controlability on slippery surfaces.
The Swedish "secret service" (SÄPO) used them to both protect and drive around the King and Queen until a couple of years ago. Still used by the bodyguards
man you guys just keep getting the cars I'm been wanting, first the V70R, then the C30 and now the V8 S80. Looks like we have the exactly same taste in cars, must be a Jersey thing...
What's even crazier is that this very same enginethat is under the hood of both the Volvo S80 and XC90 is the very same engine that is in the Noble M600 super car albeit twin turbocharged. A car that is literally on par in performance with the likes of McClarens, Lamborghinis and Ferraris.
Yamaha and Ford always said they were different because they didn't want a lower offering (Ford) associated with an upscale car like Volvo. The die-cast open-deck aluminum Volvo block is clearly different from the sand-cast closed-deck aluminum SHO engine block although the two engines share many common dimensions including bore centers, stroke, bearing journal diameters, and deck height. Hard to think that the same people that designed the successful SHO engine wouldn't use any of the same design elements in the Volvo V8. That's why Yamaha got the job.
Mechanically speaking there is a massive difference between the volvo and noble engines a huge amount of modifications have to be done to get the power out of it, the block is the same but that's about it
The rear sway bar and upgraded end links make a huge difference (although i did add Bilstein B6’s at the same time). You gotta do it bud! I have an 07 S80 V8. Great car. Btw- I ran it straight piped for about 20k; drone was awful. I had an issue shifting from 1-2 under heavy acceleration...I had it flushed and adaptations reset and it fixed it.
I've had two T5's C70 1998 & 2000 models maybe he had a bad one, T5's are extremely reliable when looked after. People buy bad cars without service history and expect a miracle then complain.... 👀
lets talk about vw 1.9tdi ;D 793k and still daily driven. Its just about maintenance. Will drive this as long as i can without changing the engine. After engine or trans is done then i might just scrap it or save for a project. Has been in my life longer than many people
As you mentioned, the S80 V8 is the ultimate sleeper. Owned one and while not a car nut, it's definitely at the top of my list. Very capable high performing vehicle almost zero vices. Best of all, the traffic police never took a second glance! One more thing, I like the style of your narrative. Polite, but you don't hold back on criticism nor commentary, where it's due. Nice work.
This engine is AMAZING. My dad's XC90 V8 R-Design is a blast. There is nothing more fun than doing second gear pulls at 40MPH next to some guy in an AMG or M car. The looks on those peoples faces are priceless. The thing sounds sooooo good. Love that engine. Shame the trans sucks, but hey, I bet someone could shove a built M66 behind it with enough time and money.
@@alvisemunarin5416 Kinda? If you have high speed limits where you are it's amazing. It handles really nice for what it is, so fast sweepers and 2nd gear switchbacks are a lot of fun. Slow, technical stuff isn't great - all the power is at the top of the rev range and the gearing isn't great, so you have to keep the revs up. Oh, and the Drive programming sucks ass. Gotta drive it in manual mode if you want to not get frustrated.
@@markkibbe1802 ah interesting. I'm personally in love with the sound of that specific yamaha v8 but sad fact: i'm from italy and here owning a v8 means spending more money than you can imagine. I know it is also a very realiable engine
@@alvisemunarin5416 Yeah they sound insane, but it's not very practical for low speed limits or small towns. That auto programming is so frustrating in town. They are pretty solid aside from balance shaft issues on the first two years (05 and 06) and they generally like to leak at higher mileage.
The sound from behind was sick - like a supercar or something :D I live in Sweden and the S80 V8 is pretty exotic even here. Must say that the thing I love most with this model is that the engine is from Yamaha (and now the sound after hearing it with modded exhaust) :D
There are a few non American V8s that aren’t high displacement that sound amazing and this one along the 1UZ are the best to me ngl🙌🏽😂miss my SC everyday😭
I recently purchased a 2010 s80 v8 executive (9 months ago). It had 121k miles, full records, volvo dealership owner owned it. It never needed a thing except wiper blades. The lack of it never needing anything, sort of scared me, but I took the plunge. Its my 2nd volvo, and absolutely adore this car! I did replace the leaky valve cover gaskets; video is up on yt. I also added a Becker exhaust system, rear ipd anti-seay bar, front strut bar (made for a v60 orig). All my mods are on my channel if anyone is interested. The trans is what I'm concerned with... Its junk from what I understand; but I did di a soft flush of the trans fluid, using Toyota brand fluid... Video is also on my channel. All in all, its a fun, comfortable car that make beautiful noises! I love watching people's faces when i pull in the grocery store or mall lot. Lol
@@Pedal2Metal_on_RU-vid depends on where you get your valve body from and the mechanic that does the swap... I've seen a range of about $500-$1200, $800 seems to be an average... This is a decently common problem though and I'm VERY surprised that it was not a recall.
I've got one as well and it gives tremendous amount of fun. Pedestrians are looking for a some kind of muscle car, but when they notice that the sound comes from a Volvo, they have a face like WTF. On my channel there's one video of my S80 with upgraded exhaust in tunnel. Sounds freaking awesome!
I had a new S80 V8 Sport back in 2005. Loved the car and eventually sold it after six years. It was a beast and handled great in the snowy North East Winters.
Finally the video I’ve been waiting for. You should get the 2009 XC90 V8 R-Design that comes with the quad exhaust tips. Love mine for the first year I’ve had it.
@@thisisme5487 so far I love it. Only issues I have had are minor... The window fluid sprayer is clogged and won't spray(I just haven't gotten around to fixing it), during extreme cold weather the door wont close until the car is warmed up. Oh and for some reason my car charge ports (cig lighters) won't let my phone chargers plug in. Frustrating because like to use a dashcam. Other than that I love it. My last car was a Mustang GT (2006). As far as the Volvos power compares, its slower off the line but feels faster during highway pulls. Car handles like a boat. Comfort is good. AWD does its job. It's a good daily driver. Not the same as the mustang (RIP baby blue i miss you), but for most people that is a good thing.
@@ryanleggott2716 I definitely have different issues, but just common wear and tear issues. Bought it with 113k miles on it, seemed pretty clean and I test drove it several times before buying it for 3.8k. Second time driving it after buying it I got an oil leak lol. Small, but still. I had a 94 Trans Am for the longest time until it broke down and then I bought a 6th gen Camaro almost 2 years ago. So it's hard to compare since it's been so long since I drove the Trans Am, but I do have to say the Trans Am felt a bit faster, though that may have just been because it had such a hard launch. Bought the Volvo as a winter car and while and it can definitely pull, feels about the same as my Trans Am for highway pulls but still not bad. And it still pulls really well at 40-50, it's actually pretty fun. Lovely car, and it carries the weight well. I just wish I didn't have it in beige :( RIP Stang. I've always liked The Mustangs and Trans Ams, and now the newer Camaros. Love the look of the newer Mustangs as well, because of that I almost considered Trading my Camaro for a Mustang but I just like the feel of it too much compared to the Mustang. Definitely fun having such a unique car as this Volvo though!
@@thisisme5487 i might have a rear main seal leak. It's nothing to bat an eye at, the shop i had the car checked out at said it might be leaking, might not... If it is leaking its an extremely small leak. 3.8k for a V8 S80 is a really good deal. I live up north where there is a premium for AWD cars. I paid 6.5k at a dealership for mine, 93k miles. I love the old Trans Am's. I miss Pontiac. My Volvo is white with the beige interior. I dont like the interior color. :) Have fun with your new car. Let me know if you have any major issues I should watch out for myself
@@ryanleggott2716 Ayyy mine is also white! It's a 2007! Sounds like we might have the exact same cars. But yeah, I need to take a closer look at my leak. I'm going to go ahead and just assume it's not good, especially if you're also having a possible rear main seal leak around the same miles... That's how my Trans Am went. I still have it, just debating what to do with it still. So hard to make the decision to get rid of it! The Volvo was definitely a good deal though. Probably not many people looking for a V8 S80, or even know about it. I sure didn't, it's just what I happened upon when I was looking for quick v8 cars with AWD, and there happened to be one in Utah. Tell me about it, regarding Pontiac. I only wish I could see where they would be right now if they weren't put down. Good luck to you and yours, Hopefully it's healthier than you're concerned it might be. I'll let you know if mine comes up with anything else for sure
I owned this exact same car back in the days. I loved it. The exhaust note reminded me of my friend's Corvette. For a sports sedan, it handled real well, but punching it with the exhaust note was my favorite thing to do. I wish Volvo would bring back a V8 engine.
Thats soo cool that you made a video on this when i just picked this car up a couple of weeks ago. Literally within 2 hours of picking up the car, i took off the mufflers and it sounds godly. Another option that came with this car that i luckily happened to get , was the 4C suspension settings. same as it is with the R. Theres also a mini fridge in the back seat :D
I'm considering one of these (in the UK) Heard sound from outside with muffler delete and they sound amazing. But was wondering how loud it becomes inside? Does it drone or make it uncomfortable?
The 60 degree aluminum Yamaha V8 was first put into the gen 3 Taurus SHO. It was 3.4l high revving engine. It was a great engine -but- they were known for camshaft failures. 💀
I have a 2011 Volvo S80 D3. I like the sound of my 5cylinder diesel even though it has 300,000miles it's still extremely reliable. I wish to get a V8 but its just not economical.
Before you replace the transmission, just service it first. The Aisin Warner transmissions they use like fresh fluid in them. S60 T5 owner with Motul MultiATF in the trans. Holds up MUCH better than original Type 4 when cruising through hills for 4 hours.
I'm a new lover off Volvos, I have one c30 1,6 R design 2012 for 2years, now I'm gonna make the switch to a s80 2,4 D5 from 2007, big improve for me in power 😅
MattyFielding6 Still 96% better than on a pt cruiser lol on a pt you have to drop the engine (unbolt all engine mounts) take the passenger tire off, remove many other parts it’s a bitch! And all bolts will be rusted out it’s a pt after all. Plus the alternator is right on the bottom by the tire right above the driveshaft to it gets sprayed with water sand rocks so they brake all the time lol 😂
mousiee7 I don’t think I do however there are a few tunes out. I’ve beaten a lot of cars that I don’t think I should’ve with my little baby 😂. But I highly doubt the previous owner got the P* tune
I can recommend the TransGo valve body repair kits. I've put one in my ZF 5HP24A which used to slur between gears and it now shifts beautifully. I intend to put on in my XC90 V8 Aisin as well.
I took a aftermarket lip from a Subaru WRX and put it on my S80 V8 just to turn around and gets smacked by a Dodge Ram in 2018 I was also running a straight straight pipe but not dual just one pipe coming out from the right right now it's sitting under my mom's car port waiting for me to yank the V8 out of it I want to put it inside of my old 91 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon which is rear wheel drive but I have to see it done before I do it just to see if it's possible
I had one and loved it. This car is super reliable and fun to drive. Only bad thing is this car kills aftermarket alternators so buy Volvo parts only don't cheap out.
Sorry, their best engine is the redblock 4cyl. But the 5cyl is a good engine, it certainly makes more power and is more efficient, but the redblock was tougher.
I have volvo s70 glt with a 5cyl with 170 hp and i love it but some times its good some times its bad but duett,240740,940 are usually the best sweden out peace Saab🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
@@michaellehto1697 there are some difference between the "regular haldex system" and the BW that is in the Polestar. Mainly how the power is distributed, the BorgWoner system does not feel as front bies as the "rugular Haldex" because it is less front bies. There are probably some significant mechanical differenses between the two. I guess that I will be doing some research on exactly how the BorgWoner system works and compare it to what I know about the Haldex system.
@@klaspeppar5619 um Haldex was bought by BorgWarner and any certified volvo tech will you that Volvo release a webinar about calling Haldex Systems, BorgWarner.... Volvo went back through all of their online systems and replaced Haldex with BorgWarner
I used to have a inline 5 Volvo v70 T5, i never did anything to it except filled it up and changed airfilter the 3-4 years i owned it. It just kept going.
To be honest, this Volvo looks really good , especially from the back. Not a boring looking daily driver for old people at all. And it sounds like a damn beast!
The Volvo B36 is a four-stroke, cast-iron 90 degree petrol V8 introduced in 1952. It develops 120 PS (88 kW) at 4000 rpm and 260 N⋅m (192 lb⋅ft) at 2200 rpm. The engine weighs 235 kg (518 lb) and displaces 3.56 liters.[1] The two-port Carter carburetor and intake are located between the cylinder banks. The crossflow heads are of a cast iron alloy, while the five-bearing camshaft is of a case-hardened steel alloy. The engine is often said to be a twinned B18 four-cylinder, but in reality only some parts in the valve train are interchangeable between the two engines. This engine was used in the Volvo L420 Snabbe truck, amongst others. It had been developed by Volvo for a planned luxury automobile called Volvo Philip in the early 1950s, when this project was cancelled it was installed in a truck instead. Due to excessive thirst, diesel engines soon became available in this range of trucks. The B36 was discontinued in 1973, although it had no longer been used in trucks after 1966. It was the last petrol truck engine built by Volvo, and the only V8 engine in any vehicle except for the newer Yamaha built unit used in XC90 and S80. A marine version was available, the Volvo Penta AQ180 boasting 180 hp with twin carburetors.
He’s missed out on the most important feature of that car... there’s a button that puts the headrests down in the back so if there are people in the backseat you can hit them in the head with the headrests.
I was a Volvo mechanic, i remember this old dude who came every year with his 2 cars. A beautiful 242 turbo white mint condition under 100000 km and then his daily Volvo 740 turbo with +900000 km still running smooth. I too have owned many old Volvo's Good and bad, but i have never had a breakdown, and not one of my cars had under 400000km on the clock. One of them leaked alot of oil, and i drove many km with very very little oil in the engine, when i filled it up there was room for 3 liters, so i was driving around with 0.9 liters in the engine.
Fun facts. This V8 was jointly developed by Volvo and Yamaha for use in Volvo large cars but also for the Australian Garry Rogers Motorsports team for the V8 Supercars Series. It was also used for BOAT racing.
These cars are great, they were mainly produced to attract the US market. Rare as hens teeth in the uk. Interestingly enough it has the same power plant in it as the Noble M600 but with the addition of a twin-turbo producing 650bhp.....
I've just switched from my S80 V8 after 200,000 really happy miles. It's been a great buy, combining Volvo build quality with an engine and drivetrain that are man enough for the job. In the UK there are very few on the road - fewer than 100 I believe - but there are some still around and on sale. Round the town, a car like this is just wasteful, but if you need a good motorway cruiser, snap one up!
Volvo made many great marine v8 engines. I remember one of my dads boat had 2x 430 pentas wow the torque was imence for a 55ft boat. V70 d5 driver. Love volvo
The other volvo engine is the Volvo B36 engine made back in the late 50s and early 60s. It was the only other Volvo V8. It was intended to be put in passenger cars like the Volvo Amazon an P544 but the plan went bust and instead they put it in there light trucks like the Volvo Snabbe. The B36 engine is a 3.6 V8 petrol. The B36 was one of the lowest revving petrol engines.
For anybody wondering/wanting to buy the V8 engine somewhere. The engine is a B8444S and they cost $1K - $5K depending on the quality. They are *VERY* rare to find on there own.
I owned a 1998 Cadillac Seville STS back in 2004-2007. I've dearly missed it since. But, the Northstar.....well, was a Northstar. lol. But, the car itself was so comfortable. This seems similar. I want..... Really badly!
