William just finished A&P school, and is now on his way to his life long career fixing planes. Former bicycle mechanic, to full fledged aircraft technician; William is following the Wright Brother's path. This was my first outdoor toolbox tour, and I loved it - I hope you do too. If you enjoy this video, give William a thumbs up! Thank you all for watching!

trust me we get a lot of information thrown at us in A&P school and for the tests, the 60 question general test that I just passed had over 600 different questions that are possible on the test. Its even more with the Airframe and Powerplant tests and orals/praticals too.

In the Navy, our avionic's tool boxes had to be checked after each repair and signed off. Tool accountability is very serious in Aviation. If a tool or part, even just a nut was dropped or missing, all hands on deck had to walk the hangar and flight line looking for it. Only QA could stop the search and sign off on it. Some searches took hours.
@ToolBoxTour
@ToolBoxTour Год назад
My friend told me about how the new guys get hazed in the military. Someone will take a socket out of the newbies box and hide it somewhere so they have to shut the entire hanger down for hours while everyone searches for hours. Newbies end up taking a ton of heat for it.

What a great box for a young bloke starting in the industry. The hard Snap On screwdrivers were definitely better than the soft ones for aviation. Hemostats are great for holding P clamps. I seem to have a LOT more tools for extracting screws. I love how the safety locks on all the air tools are disabled. 😂 Same as every aircraft workshop.

@georgeferlazzo7936
@georgeferlazzo7936 Год назад
Hello Fly Alaric Hopefully, I can answer your question. If you go back to the Wright Brother's (USA) when Aviation was started. SAE/STANDARD hardware was all they had. Another point. English is the standard for pilots and air traffic control. All car until recently were SAE/STANDARD. I hope that helps.
@mikebotkin2008

For the most part, yes. Diamond aircraft uses some metric and I ran across a Hawker 600 in the 80’s that had metric and SAE fasteners.
@jasonmarquis9935
@jasonmarquis9935 Год назад
Aircraft standardization fell into the hands of the USA, a lot of which happened during WWII. As opposed to the automotive industry having very strong roots in Europe and Asia making metric very common. On a different topic, you have all these countries using metric sockets on an imperial drive (e.g. 3/8” and 1/2”). 😁

Even wilder is that even Airbus’ are, effectively, SAE. Reason is NACA - the precursor to NASA. Back in the day they spent lots of taxpayer money developing standards that were so well done they became the… standard. It always made me lol to read drawings with ‘6.83mm’ holes for bolts

For the question about the hemostats, I can add some more info for you. Most A&P's use hemostats to not only hold things in place but to also reach for things in tight spots. For example, imagine you were putting a cap on an actuator body and the diaphragm that sits on top of the piston has somewhat rolled over. You would use hemostats to reach in there and grab the diaphragm since they not only fit but they also won't damage the diaphragm.

Pawning a box is stupid since selling them gets a lot more money. BTW ask your local tool truck guys to let you know when they repo a box because when Bubba spends too much money his box gets repo'ed. However tool dealers don't want to sit on stock so they often sell at a bargain price.

Hello, i'm not Amiercan, but maybe someone can answer me some questions: Do you not get tools from the company you work for when you are mechanic? Or why does he have to buy it himself? Is that common in America? Also, more like a special aviation question but: i was at an aircraft workshop once and they had all their tools numbered and at fixed places, everything clean sorted. They told me it's so they can easily spot missing tools and they said if something at the end of their work is missing they can not let the plane leave until it is found, because of the danger of it being lost inside the plane and potentially damaging the plane during flight. They also told me tools in the aviation industry have special requirements, like most tools are screwless, or screws are replaced by rivets (Example: backplate of a ratchet). Seeing his toolkit, i wonder if this more like a guideline in specific countries or companies rather than a general one?
@edieuro95
@edieuro95 7 месяцев назад
Hello, Yes for the most part mechanics in the United States are required to have their own tools. I prefer it to be honest because I can buy what is best for me if that makes sense. Yes for me at least we have to keep a log of our tools and if anything is missing the aircraft cannot take off until the tool is found. Doesn’t just go for tools though. If you drop a nut or something inside the aircraft the same applies. I’ve never heard about the screwless tool part but it does make sense.
@seant6624
@seant6624 5 месяцев назад
Not screwless tools per say but they call them FOD less (Foreign Object Debris)tools snap on makes some but not a lot. Not sure but probably mostly sold to US government aviation not a lot in the civilian market. They just make it so the small screws on ratchets don’t have them or are designed so they can’t fall out. I’ve only seen the FODless ratchets online. In the military we had to have glue on the tiny screws on our tools for that reason.
@lplacido61
@lplacido61 3 месяца назад
I can concur with the previous answers as well. I went through A&P school and for each class they had a tool list. So, by the time you graduated and started working you would have the basic stuff needed to do the job. I worked for McDonnell Douglas Flight Test on MD-80's, MD-11, and then on the C-17. We could check out of the tool crib tools for certain jobs. And when I got laid off from them, I had a lot of sheet metal tools like rivet guns, drills, etc. A lot of my friends built side boxes for their "taco stands". That's what we call the larger rollaways" because of their size. Good times! 🙂
