Gary Booker is a classic whiskey tenor......I was blessed to grow up in the 60 and 70's. Wish we could have this kind of music back, because it feeds the soul with beauty and joy.

A British band with a great unique sound. An Essex band from Southend-on-Sea. Rest In Peace Gary Brooker and Keith Reed. Legends now and always. This song was played at my Maternal Grandparents double-funeral on March 9th 2021. They died from Coronavirus during that horrific spike (Late January 2021). Miss you Nanna Irene and Grandpa Les. I love the sound of an orchestra, especially when they cover a classic like this song😊❤😊

Gary Brooker is the lead singer and those of us who heard this song for the first time in the 60s are astounded by the fact that his voice sounds as great or perhaps even better, seasoned by age and experience than it did more than 50 years ago. In 1967, they were a 4 piece rock band. The lead singer, Gary Brooker, sounds so amazing here, 40 years after they originally released this song. They did not have the orchestra back then. But the organ was in the original. Like you said, the heartbeat. Unfortunately, Gary passed away Feb. 19, 2022. I click on this video every time I see a new reactor watching it. And I cry, every time.

After all these years I think his voice may be have gotten better over the years.

65 year old man crying. I know not why. This song has been a favorite part of my life since the 60s. It is so touching to share this experience with a young woman generations apart from me Now let's do "A Salty Dog" from this same concert. I don't care if any of you geezers think I'm a pansy, or a puffier, I will cry when I hear these beloved old tunes. Passion is not weakness. It is rather the fuel that fires up the physical aspect of love. If there is a lovely woman about my age who also responds passionately to music, connect, but only if you like slow dancing. Cheers.

I was 17 years old when this first came out. A classic. I am now in my early 70’s and this song still affects me the way it did when it first came out. And yes, you’re right, there is a similar vocal sound to Phil Collins. Never thought about it before. Just subscribed to your channel. I myself am a musician of many different instruments.

He had a good 5000 days of life after this performance. A life well lived.

Over 70 microphones were used with every member of the choir having their own mike and every instrument being close miked. This was highly unusual---orchestras and choirs would normally have a few overhead mikes. It was recorded on 100 channels of sound. At one of the rehearsals the bass player asked if he could hear more cello in his monitor and the engineer said "sure, which one?" Attention to detail was unbelievable. Was it worth it? You bet it was.

Find the old version of this from the 60's to understand just how good this live orchestral version is. Brooker's voice is sounding so good and the arrangement is just superb.

I had the pleasure of seeing Procol Harum and Jethro Tull in concert together almost 30 yrs ago. It was great.

I feel so privileged to have grown up as these songs were released. I was 13 when this song came out. It moved my world at 13. So many songs wrapped around my core made me who and what I am. To this day I can be transported back by so many songs but this one is special.

What a fantastic song and voice! I was fortunate enough to not only hear Gary Brooker sing Whiter Shade of Pale live when he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Star Band but I also had the privilege to meet him backstage before the show. Great memories!

Amazingly, this was the debut 45 single by Procol Harum in May of 1967. It became # 1 with a bullet in the UK and stayed there for SIX WEEKS! It sold over ten million copies and was played throughout the Summer of Love. Playing with the Denmark Orchestra in 2006, this arrangement, bolstered by Brooker's magnificent vocal, takes on an almost transcendental feeling.

I enjoyed your reaction. You have a ear for good music. I feel for the people out there who are closed-minded to certain music. This was a masterpiece, done way better than the original in the sixties which had no orchestra or chorus. Even his voice improved.

As a man of 62, it is wonderful to see such a beautiful ( and respectful) young lady interested in historic songs. It is really great for you , as in our time we would have to wait long times to hear new songs , whereas you can just dial them up. I also believe the late Joe Cocker done a copy of this song. You will find many many years wealth of true masterpieces , some almost lost to memory, buried in the depths of time. This live performance is just absolutely breathtaking. The intro is incredible, then Gary comes in absolutely on point, and the song just builds and builds, with instruments and the choir. There are not many artists that can sound better live, than the original recording, Gary absolutely smashes it out of the park here. He was coming up to 62 when he performed here. Saw Procol Harum many decades ago and his voice has hardly altered, Great performance.

Gary Brooker had been working on melody inspired by classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, saying: “Throughout 1966 I had followed with interest the work of the Jacques Loussier Trio and the Swingle Singers, who had made an art of adapting Bach pieces. Air On A G String was the starting point but the rest was invention, with constant reference to Bach-like breaks and atmosphere.” Paul McCartney who also loved Bach said he wished he had composed this song.

This tune was played on organ in the church for our wedding 25 years ago.

For those of you who are wondering about the meaning of the song... you need to find the version which includes all 4 verses. He only ever recorded 2 of them, and it's the other 2 that make sense of them. So why didn't he record all of them? Well the video of his live concert with all 4 verses is 9 minutes long. Maybe he'll finally record the complete song on a greatest hits album one day. Anyway, the story takes place on a ship at sea, during a wild party. He has his sights set on a girl who's part of the group, and she's so drunk that with the ship going up and down, she's getting sea-sick and she turns a whiter shade of pale. Anyway, he won't take no for an answer (wouldn't let her be a Vestal virgin), and she eventually warms up to him and even tries to play a fantasy game of sorts with him but he's too literal or drunk to understand (3rd verse). He realizes his "faux pas" and changes his tune, and she gives in to his charm and he gets what he was after (4th verse). Now you know... the rest of the story!

His voice improved with age and maturity. And that Hammond organ is just brilliant! And it must be mentioned that the arrangements for the orchestra are brilliant, too.

The story was that they went intro the studio and recorded this in one take. Outstanding, even in those days. The Hammond organ was front and centre.
