Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Shaolin Soccer is a comedic martial arts sports film that combines action, humor, and a touch of fantasy to deliver an entertaining and exhilarating experience. Directed by Stephen Chow, the film takes the audience on a wild and imaginative journey that showcases the power of teamwork and determination.
The story follows Sing, a former Shaolin monk who has lost his way in life. When he discovers the hidden talents of a group of misfits, including a baker, a failed soccer player, a strongman, and others, Sing hatches a plan to form a soccer team. Combining their unique skills with martial arts, Sing assembles an unconventional team that sets out to conquer the world of professional soccer.
One of the film's greatest strengths is its ability to seamlessly blend martial arts with sports. The action sequences are dynamic and visually impressive, featuring gravity-defying kicks, flips, and awe-inspiring displays of power. Each team member brings their own comedic flair to the matches, making for hilarious and over-the-top moments that will keep you laughing throughout. The film also cleverly incorporates elements of fantasy, such as the use of special abilities and exaggerated physics, which add an extra layer of excitement to the matches.
While the plot follows a somewhat predictable sports movie formula, Shaolin Soccer stands out for its unique blend of genres and its ability to entertain and inspire. It delivers a message of perseverance, believing in oneself, and the power of teamwork. The film's underlying themes, combined with its energetic pacing and witty humor, make it a delightful watch.

Stephen Chow is considered one of the greatest comedic film star/producer in Hong Kong. His form of nonsensical humor is so unique that a became a genre called "Mo lei tau" literally translate to "makes no sense".
@harrislam
@harrislam 10 месяцев назад
Stephen Chow actually was not the inventor of this genre. There was at least Lee Lik Chi before him. Stephen was a big actor before he was producer and he was in a lot of movies from Lee. Those were the true "Mo Lei Tau" classics. Stephen eventually became a producer himself but when he took over, he was not satisfied with his movies being just plain "stupid fun". If you take a look in depth, he had actual plots deep characters and complex cinematography in his movies, each one more than the last. It's just not easy to notice if you immerse yourself into the fun. The true nonsensical classics back then had no such things.
@installgentoo8561
@installgentoo8561 10 месяцев назад
There were the Hui brothers too in the 70-80s contributing to the Mo Lei Tau genre. @harrislam also not necessarily true, the old classics written / produced / directed by others in the 90s still has the same depth as the neo- Stephen Chow stuff he directed (late 90s, early-mid 2000s stuff). It's always has to do with the MC or protagonist which is played by Chow himself, the character who was initially an arrogant, smug, cocky, corrupt, or sleazy, scummy, slacker, or a mischievous joker / clown / troll... suddenly finds himself in undesirable situations due to his bad "karma" and falls down the ladder of life, down into the gutter, a failure and scum of society, now living off the streets, beaten and broken. It's down there that the MC finally sees the real world and the real society, and after seeing the "victims" he bullied, he finally sees his real self. This is where he realizes the errors of his way and achieves an "awakening" of some sort, and the films progress onwards from that point, seeing how the MC tries to redeem himself and fixes the errors of his and others around him for a better world or society. I mean seriously, it's basically an awakening -> redemption story, turning over a new leaf, cleansing your karma etc. The bully or tyrant becomes a saint or the simple fool turns out to be a holy fool. Or the MC is Jesus / Buddha / other deity etc reincarnated, or turns out the nobody is actually an undercover agent / spec ops / spy etc. That's almost like 90% of his movies are like that lol. Sometimes it's also about unrequited love or trying to fix bonds in relationships etc, even if the chance had passed. On screen and offscreen. The whole thing, fiasco, rumours etc surrounding him and Athena Chu, Karen Mok, all that motifs that keeps reappearing in several movies over decades, which turned out actually means something today and it turns out to be real, but it's actually a reference to another actress that passed away, that had a thing going on between them. Another parallel to his movies (both he directed and appeared on), is in the real world, he likes to do good for other people too, like him gathering his "Hing Dai" or Shaolin "brothers" in this movie here. He often had old timer actors cast in his movies (directed and appeared) who hasn't seen work for a long time or has "fallen" in the industry, to "big up" their name again, to support or kickstart their career again, help them get back on their feet, a chance to better life. Cheng Pei Pei in Flirting Scholar for instance, or Yuen Wah in Kungfu Hustle, even Yuen Qiu, the landlords. Many others, like the Iron Head and Iron Shirt guy in this one. So there were depth in his old films, even in those were written and directed / produced by others. It's just that those older films are more "raw" and rougher on the edge, with that absurd "mo lei tau"-ness, the big "fun" factor on the top that often obscures the emotive or philosophical factor in the deep. All his later films he produced/written/directed feels more composed, and more "romanticized", as in it has a more auteur-like obsessive craftsmanship in trying to get the focus on the "deep" stuff rather than just "mo lei tau" fun factor alone carrying the film.

I am from Hong Kong. Many of us Hong Kong people grew up watching Stephen Chow's movies. After he transitioned to directing, his films tended to lean towards the direction of animation. He likes to use exaggerated methods to present the desired effects he wants to express.

This film is why in the intro to Kung Fu Hustle Stephen Chow destroys a ball some kids were playing with and says “no more soccer!” A lot of the actors here are part of his “crew” and all of them are epic guys Their goalkeeper is actually a Bruce Lee impersonator and has played Bruce Lee in some movies. He was also the axe gang boss in Kung Fu Hustle. Unrecognizable The iron body brother who was the second goalkeeper in the final match was the second in command of the axe gang in Hustle The fat brother was also in Kung Fu Hustle as Stephen Chow’s buddy who is given money and is sent away by him Mui, Stephen Chow’s love interest in this is played by the legendary Zhao Wei. She has cornered the “tomboy” roles in hong kong cinema and plays characters who are beautiful but dont mind getting dirty. Action women. She also stars as Mulan in a live action movie with good reviews

The US version has some cuts I don't really understand, as well as the OST totally changed. The original cantonese version has some parts which explain things and create more context. They cutted away all the "bloody/violent" scenes and added weird cartoony sounds not present in the original version. Oak is right when he says they're in the restaurant and then they're immediately outside with different clothes. This happens beause of a bad captioning. In the o.v. you can get they're singing the night before and they make an appointment the day after in the afternoon. Basically it seems they ruined the movie. It's still enjoyable, but I'll never get the reason to do such a things.

I am glad you guys enjoyed this. its rare to see oak smile and laugh. This is one of my favourite movie. Though it is too bad that you watched the Americanized version because the version you guys' watched has been cut down by 22 mins from the original! There is some missing context. Like the intro has missing prologue to show the relationship between the villain and Golden Leg. Some subtitles words are changed, some music has been changed to american music and the voice sound effects are fully dubbed over, very strange. This Shaolin Soccer (2001) is one of Stephen Chow's best other than Kung Fu Hustle (2004). This is not Stephen Chow's first movie. It's like his eighth. And Shaolin Soccer (2001) is the 2nd last movie that he is starring as main character. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is the last. So it is really precious that you guys have watched Stephen Chow in his PRIME acting career before he took a back seat. There is no other creative person like Stephen Chow because he is unique. He produce, write, direct and star as main character in his own movies all by himself! There is no other movie like this. His humour formula is not easy to replicate. That's why he is a natural. People will call this a "live action anime" and it is not easy to portray this kind of movie with real people and make it look good. And Shaolin Soccer (2001) and Kung Fu Hustle (2004) are his top 2 best because he intentionally made these for the international market. before it was all for Hong Kong. His third best is God of Cookery (1996) Shaolin Soccer (2001) even has a smaller budget than Kung Fu Hustle (2004). The CGI isn't purposely made bad actually, you must remember this is 22 years ago technology made in Hong Kong production house, so it will definitely looks different from America's production hosue. It is because of the success of Shaolin Soccer (2001), that he was given a bigger budget for Kung Fu Hustle (2004), thankfully, which you can see huge improvement in the CGI.

This is NOWHERE NEAR his first film..... He started making films in either the late 80's or early 90's.... This is just the first that got really popular with English speaking audiences.

Here's a nice tidbit for you guys : the goalkeeper is Stephen Chow's tribute to his idol, Bruce Lee. The goalkeeper is fast with his hands, that is why at 12:13, the scene is to show his talent for the first time by showing that he put on his clothes really fast. Later you see him gather all the shoes during "the final attack". The goalkeeper is "Danny Kwok" and not only does he looks like Bruce Lee, his costume is dressed as Bruce Lee in Game of Death (1972). And of course, you will know who else wear this jumpsuit : Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 1. just google 1972 bruce lee game of death, danny kwok, uma thurman. Fun fact : Danny Kwok is also the main villain in Kung Fu Hustle (2004). In fact, in kung fu hustle, skinny guy at 6:15 is the barber with the ass out, 13:10 fifth brother is stephen chow's side kick.

Oh, it's the "normal" version. There is an extended version, with, for example, another scene at the beginning, with Hung giving money to Golden Leg. Him failing the match wasn't a mistake, it was on purpose, and a part of Hung plan to make someone he paid broke his leg in the aftermath. The scene where he put his foot on his head to lace his shoe is here to mirror the same scene in this intro, when Golden Leg did this to him. Another scene avaiable in the extended version is the one where the Evil team broke MC's leg in the finals. In the normal version, it looks like he couldn't support to lift another player with only his leg, but in the extended version, after that, the player used that to prevent MC from moving his leg, , two others came from both side and they shoot at the same time in his knee ...

Most of stephen chow's movie scene were unscripted for example the part 8:13 where they do the performance and they laughed on stage. The laugh were unscripted or where the part the gangster tries to settle them after the performance where a guy tries to stretch his legs and felt pain in also unscripted

To be fair, it's his first film that got western release, but definitely not his first film. It's actually one of his last starring roles.

Stephen Chow made his mark in the movie industry as a nonsensical comedian. It took Hong Kong by surprise and it was refreshing to see the world in a different light. What we learned is that he is a master at getting your attention and winning your heart with his struggles having many disadvantages. His movies are not there to reflect reality, but to examine it with the lens of absurdity.

Ha... nice one guys! Haven't watched this for time! My friends and I used to watch this before a big football match when we were at school! It was so ridiculous but we joked we needed to channel our chi to play better, just like these misfits! So many memories! The other absurd movie that didn't really make sense but was a big hit back in the day was Napoleon Dynamite... I remember ppl thought that was pretty random but funny! Bruce Lee is king... but the Jet's, Jackies and Tony Jaa's were brilliant in the 90's - 00's.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it in your comments, but the opening scene of kung fu hustle was Stephen Chow stomping on a soccer ball. That was an Easter mention of Shaolin Soccer. The movie was supposed to be released in the US or so but they kept on delaying the release, creating a lot of controversy. So he stomps on the ball saying no more soccer.
