Since 1927, Sidney's J.C. Penney store--one of the oldest in the state--has been a commercial mainstay through good times and bad. David Kruger discusses the origins and growth of the Penney stores from their start in Wyoming to their spread throughout the nation. He shows how Penney's "Golden Rule" of "doing unto others" led to its incredible success. Kruger was born in Baker, raised in Fallon County, and hold graduate degrees from Kansas State University and University of Missouri. He is the agricultural research librarian at the University of Wyoming. Presented at the 2013 Montana History Conference in Sidney.

Mr. Kruger was perhaps the best speaker I have seen on topics related to Montana history and the Historical Society as a whole. I highly recommend this presentation, particularly if you are interested in business, marketing or small town Montana histories.

Fabulous. My first job was as the janitor and stock girl for Penney's in Malta. Mrs. Vetter was one of very few female Managers and remains an inspiration to me today in regards to work ethic and value of rural towns. My dad, Jack Lang also worked at Penney's in Malta for then Manager, LP Strope. Family Matters, Inc., a community owned department store has resided in the JCPenney's store location in Malta for the last 11 years. Many of it's values mirror those of Mr. Penney. Thank you for sharing this piece of Montana history.

I am currently reading a total of 5 books on JC Penny, my respect for the man is unparalleled. But holy smokes, Mr. David Kruger is an amazing speaker! I am just now starting a speaking career on cyber security and I hope I can keep people on the edge of their seats the way Mr. Kruger kept my attention! Well done Sir!

@@HillaryMarek Without a doubt, my favorite story was when he was 8 years old and his dad told him he had to earn his own money to buy his own clothes. His shoes already had a hole in them. So he survived that issue and started to raise pigs to make even more moeny but his father made him sell the pigs as they annoyed the neighbors. He didn't think it was fair. It took him until he was much older to appreciate the fact he needed to be a good neighbor as well as an entrepreneur. My favorite book is "View from the Ninth Decade." He was in his eighties.

I learned a lot. I am on furlough from jcp. They are a good company that is managed by incompetents. They may do a bankruptcy. This is a sad end.

I am very sorry to hear this, Aaron. I really like this store a lot and wrote a brief letter to the CEO today. They have gotten too big and corporate and have lost the values of making each employee a % owner in the business, I will be praying for you and your family and hope that the stores turn around.. I know they are trying -- the Flagship in Texas is doing well and is shockingly different and wonderful.

I enjoyed this very much. I do have back to school riding the elevator memories. I would have liked to see that J.C Penney in Westlake shopping center Daly City Ca. featured. Your presentation or Speaking was flawless and flowing and I stayed interested all the way to the end. Good for you and happy for us.

My Mom bought a lot of clothes from P.C. Penney's in Chinook. As a side note, we were at Penney's when news came out the JFK was shot. My Mom cried. I was a young boy.

I work at a JCPenney, the reason why the company does horrible is because it’s business model sucks. Their return policy is way to nice and they don’t make any attempt to stop theft.
