Stores were looted when it yot out that it was a cat 2 hurricane and they looted even more just before landfall wich in this case is justified as many could be stuck for days or weeks and that without any preparations. The looting might have safed a good amount of people. And contrary to the US they only looted the stored with food and clean watwr

to those of you wondering, the reason for the massive fail was the fact that the storm was experiencing massive southerly sheer which was inhibiting development despite water temperatures in the high 80s. Its important to note that the stronger the storm the better it is at keeping off shear, in this case approximately 18 hours out from landfall the storm itself was able to break free from the shear temporarily to strengthen to a point where it could ward off the shear indefinitely allowing for it to rapidly intensify.

Not only that --- just look at how rapidly it dissipated once on land. This was no large storm, it just had conditions that allowed for a brief local intensification of high winds. Tragic to those in that path, yes --- but just a storm in the right place at the right time none-the-less.

Dude if you know everything so damn good then try to forecast it yourself believe me you will fail immediately... and this was jit forecasted as this was seen as impossible on this planet this has already been called a once in the tens of thousands of years storm for this PLANET in the weather community. And this kept intensifying while being for more then 40% already over land it went from cat 2 to strong cat 5 while being over land for a very good part having the eye just of the coast

Models are based on current observations but also on past weather history. When there is no comparable history due to a changing climate the models reach their limits.

Maybe instead of assuming it is the nhc's fault, do some actual fucking research. 1) There isn't any radar 2) The models didn't forecast it because the chance of this happening was so slim, everything had to go perfect ex: pinhole eye, correct track, no storm structure issues. 3) They did the best they could.

Most pacific storms in the eastern pacific weaken before landfall. This is the only storm on record to make a landfall as a CAT 5 in the eastern pacific.

Example :- Hurricane Patricia peaked as a 215 mph hurricane, but quickly levelled off to a 150 mph system prior to the landfall.... Otis strengthened to a 165 mph system, all the way upto landfall, making landfall at that intensity... That's why the person was surprised...

Some facts about Otis - It is the costliest hurricane on record as well in the costliest in Mexico, surpassing Manuel from 2013, and also surpassing Wilma from 2005 as the costliest hurricane in Mexico - It surpassed Patricia from 2015 for being the strongest - Otis is worst than Pauline from 1997 and Manuel combined, but the fatality rate was lower than both So yeah. Many tropical cyclones have undergone rapid intensification periods in the past and this one unfortunately happened just prior to landfall. It has nothing to do with so-called climate change, but is a phenomenon that is still not well understood in the meteorology community -- thus the unexpected intensity change in such a short time by the forecasters.

The number of lunatics and fanatics talking about HAARP, climate change, and weather modification is astounding in these comments. As a meteorologist myself, I understand how uncertain and chaotic short-term weather forecasting often is. Otis was yet another example of a hurricane rapid intensification phase that happened to occur just prior to landfall. Camille did that in 1969 and so did the Florida Keys 1935 hurricane. We still have a lot to learn about predicting weather events, let alone modifying storm systems that have enormous amounts of energy and power behind them that even numerous nuclear bombs would not even alter (instead would merely make a radioactive hurricane!). If you don't understand the science and physics behind extreme weather events, then don't go around blaming weather modification conspiracy theories or parrot unfounded talking points about climate change and increased extreme weather events.

Stop it already! We struggle to predict weather accurately, so we certainly aren't able to control it. This is called hurricane rapid intensification phase, and it just happened to occur prior to landfall in this instance.
